Message from Dr. Smith

Hello Bruin Families,

We closed out the 3rd quarter this week celebrating Culture Appreciation Day and performing our 5th annual Lake Braddock International Show hosted by the SGA.  After a 2-year hiatus, it was wonderful to gather and enjoy the beautiful representation of our Lake Braddock community. We are so proud of all the students who participated in this event.

Entering Spring Break, we hope that you will be able to have some time to rest and recharge with meaningful time together. We want our students and staff to disconnect from school and enjoy their time off.

We will continue to follow our long-standing practice of not having any major assignments due nor giving any major assessments on the first two full days back to school on April 11 and 12.

During the week of Spring Break, our offices will be closed. When we return on Monday, April 11, we will start the 4th quarter and will be looking forward to graduation on June 6.

We hope you enjoy the extra time with your children, and we look forward to seeing everyone back in April.

Go Bruins!

Daniel W. Smith, Ed.D.

Ramadan

Ramadan Begins April 3

This year, the first full day of Ramadan is April 3. Ramadan Mubarak to those in our Lake Braddock community who celebrate!  Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year for Muslims, who believe it was during this month that God revealed the first verses of the Quran, Islam's sacred text, to Mohammed, on a night known as "The Night of Power." During the entire month of Ramadan, Muslims fast every day from dawn to sunset. It is meant to be a time of spiritual discipline—of deep contemplation of one's relationship with God, extra prayer, increased charity and generosity, and intense study of the Quran.

military

April is Month of the Military Child

Each year, our nation designates April as the Month of the Military Child to recognize and thank children from military families for the sacrifices they make living the military lifestyle.  The recognition is part of the legacy of former Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger who established the commemoration in 1986.  During the month, one day is selected as the day to “Purple Up! For Military Kids” and all are encouraged to wear purple in recognition of the strength and sacrifices of military-connected youth (MCY).  Why purple?  Purple is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military, as it is the combination of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine red, and Navy blue.  This year, Purple Up! Day is April 20.

FCPS and Lake Braddock is proud to recognize all military-connected children this April during Month of the Military Child. Each year we join our country in celebrating the resiliency of military-connected children for their tremendous service and sacrifice at home in the U.S. and overseas.

arab month

April is Arab American Heritage Month

The month of April is Arab American Heritage Month. This declaration was made in April 2021 and during this time we will celebrate the Arab American heritage and culture and pay tribute to the contributions of Arab Americans and Arabic-speaking Americans at our school, in our community and throughout the country.

update

School Laptop Updates

As SOLs are approaching we are going to do a school wide computer health check on April 14 during advisory. During the health check, students will be asked to restart their laptop, check that they have the latest Testnav and SCCM installed. Prior to Thursday April 14 , please have your students bring in their school issued device daily to restart their laptops. If a student has not been using their school issued laptop they might have to do several restarts to receive the counties updates.

Congrats to the LB HS Orchestra!

All high school orchestra students did a great job at the state assessment this weekend, which was hosted at Centreville High School. All four ensembles earned superior ratings!  We are very proud of them, and they did a very good job making the music come alive.  Thank you to the chaperones, Mr. Luley, Mr. Isaac, and Ms. Pezold who all helped out last Friday night with Symphony Orchestra.

Festival of the Arts April 16

On April 16th, from 10-4 pm, we will be having a music festival here at Lake Braddock! The LB Festival Of The Arts is a collaboration between the music, art, and theatre departments to hold a festival for the community to enjoy while showcasing students' work and abilities with games, food trucks, and more!. If your child is interested in music and art make sure to come to our festival!

Online Tutoring Support Services/Opt-Out Information

Earlier this week, you should have received an email from FCPS regarding the new online tutoring services.

FCPS is excited to share a great opportunity that is available to all FCPS students! Your child will soon have unlimited access to 24/7, on-demand, online tutoring support services through Tutor.com. Students can connect online any time, any place, and in most subjects for however long they need. Tutoring may be on-demand and/or scheduled at a time convenient for the student and/or family.

Tutoring is focused instruction provided to students in a one-on-one format (voice and/or text chat). Tutors will focus on developing your student’s strengths and capabilities in reading, mathematics, or other specified subjects. Tutoring services may be accessed before, during or after school hours and/or weekends.

Opt-Out Information

Students will be able to access Tutor.com through a link in Schoology beginning mid-April, 2022. Your student will automatically have access to the Tutor.com tutoring service unless you submit an opt-out request. If you do not want your student to have access to this online tutoring resource, complete the opt-out via ParentVUE by April 11, 2022.  Directions for opting out can be found on the Online Tutoring Services website. If you are unable to opt-out via ParentVUE, submit the hard copy form that will be sent home by your school. You may also opt your student out of Tutor.com tutoring service at a later date via ParentVUE or by submitting a request to your student's school.

How to Stay In Touch

Please stay in touch with us throughout the year by:

Attendance Lines

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS:

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS:

Procedures for Picking Up a Student Early

  • Prior to 8:00 a.m., the student must present a note from the parent to their subschool office. Notes must include time of dismissal, reason for leaving, and a contact number. Parents of middle school students must also include the name of the person picking the student up. Please note that this person must be listed as an emergency contact. At the time of early check-out, middle school parents must come in Entrance 1 and meet their student at the security desk. Anyone picking up a middle school student must bring a photo ID with them. High school parents may pick up students outside Entrance 1.
  • Notes are strongly preferred for early check-out, but if a parent is unable to send a note with the student, the parent should call the subschool office as early as possible. All calls will be confirmed by callback to a phone number on the emergency care card. Regrettably, if the parent did not send a note with the student, the parent will be required to park, come into the school to furnish a note, and pick up the student. Without advance notice provided by a note, there may be a wait until our staff is able to locate the student, particularly if the student is at lunch or in a physical education class. We further regret that without advance notice, we are unable to accommodate requests for early dismissal after 2:15 pm.
  • In either case, students must check out at the subschool office when leaving school and check in with the security desk upon return. Students who leave school without checking out properly will be marked unexcused and may face disciplinary action (if returning to school, students are also subject to search). Students must contact all teachers of any class to be missed.

Read our full Attendance procedures at our website.

Late Bus Information

Late bus days are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Buses will pick up students in the front of the building with a departure time of approximately 4:45 pm.  Please check  StudentVue and ParentVue for your student's late bus number and stop. If you have any questions, please contact your student's appropriate subschool.
