Congratulations Lake Braddock Debate Team!
On March 19, the Lake Braddock Debate Team competed as the VHSL's Occaquon Region Debate Championship Tournament, the first state-qualifying round.

The Bruin Debaters had a great day. In the Lincoln-Douglas (LD) debate division, Sean Burdett (12) was crowned Regional Champion with an undefeated record of 5-0.  Aneshwa "Trina" Choudhury (11) placed 2nd with a record of 4-1, and Erina Haque (9) placed third with a record of 4-1 but lost the tie-break on points to Trina. Overall, Bruin debaters won 13 of the 15 debates they had. All three students move on to the Super Regional Tournament on April 2.

In the Student Congress event, Caley Nee (10) placed 5th, and Rebecca Weingast (9) placed 6th. Aidan Chomsky (10) and Ellen Lee (9) were also selected to move to the Super Regional Tournament.

Overall, the team finished second in the team standings, the fourth consecutive year that the team has either finished 1st or 2nd in the Regional tournament.

LB Outdoor Track & Field

Sports Physical Night

Save the Date for our Annual Sports Physical Night!

Mark your calendars, because our annual Sports Physical Night is BACK! Each year, the Athletic Training Program organizes a fundraising event where rising 9th-12th grade student-athletes can get their physicals done in advance of the following school year. Each student filters through an assembly line-like setup, where they get all vitals and measurements checked before seeing the doctor for a thorough physical exam. We then hold on to the physical for the following school year, which should give parents some peace of mind knowing it won’t get misplaced. Last year we joined forces with West Springfield and South County for the first time, and we intend to run it back this June! While there were some inevitable hiccups at our last event, we’ve identified what could be done better and we’re confident the night will run smoothly for all involved this time around. Keep your eyes peeled for sign-up information, once it’s made available to the public sometime in April!

Please consider signing your student up for this event, as these funds go directly into providing the best possible care for our student-athletes! While we’ve made some significant strides this year with fundraising (thank you boosters and families who have already contributed so much!), there are still some much needed updates we would love to offer our Bruins! For full transparency, please feel free to reach out to our Athletic Trainers, Kristyn Wharton (kwharton@fcps.edu) and Brittany Arndt (blarndt@fcps.edu), to discuss current conditions and future plans of updating the Athletic Training Room.

Did you know our Lake Braddock Athletic Trainers are THE best?!

NATM

March is National Athletic Training Month!

Certified athletic trainers (ATCs) are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who render service or treatment in accordance with their education, training and the state's statutes, rules, and regulations. As part of the healthcare team, services provided by athletic trainers include primary care, injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, emergent care, examination and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. The American Medical Association (AMA) recognizes athletic training as an allied healthcare profession, and recommends certified athletic trainers be in every high school to keep America’s youth safe and healthy.

On average, the Lake Braddock ATC’s undertake the following annually:

  • Evaluate, rehabilitate, and manage over 1,400 injuries (i.e. contusions, sprains, strains, concussions, ligament tears, and fractures)
  • Provide over 5,600 treatments to student-athletes, including therapeutic exercises, post-surgical rehabilitation, cold whirlpool, massage, hot packs, and ice bags
  • Record over 5,200 encounters with student-athletes, including injury evaluations, concussion consultations and follow-ups, prescribing rehabilitation plans, and providing wound care
  • Process over 1,100 physicals for student-athletes trying out for fall, winter, and spring sports, including entering them into an electronic medical records database and managing thousands of phone calls and emails from parents about incomplete/incorrect forms, registration, and the tryout process
  • Endless communication amongst coaching staff, parents, teachers, counselors, and physicians about the status of athlete injuries and level of play
  • Manage academic accommodations for students with concussions to integrate back into the classroom safely
  • Provide daily practice and game coverage, to include Saturdays
  • Mentor students interested in the Sports Medicine field of study by sponsoring an Athletic Training Student Aide club, which requires students to maintain a 2.5 GPA and complete established competencies to earn a Varsity letter/pin.
  • Provide first aid, CPR, and AED training for all FCPS coaches
  • Organize and maintain inventory to provide athletes the best possible care and resources
  • Fundraise throughout the year to replenish expendable supplies and occasionally update non-expendable equipment, as they do not receive funding from the county or school
  • Ms. K and Ms. A spend a lot of additional time on SEL (social emotional learning), helping our athletes work through balancing the challenges student athletes face.

If you would like to know more about our Certified Athletic Trainers, Kristyn Wharton (Ms. K) and Brittany Arndt (Ms. A), and what they offer our student-athletes, please check out their page on the Lake Braddock Athletics Website - https://www.lakebraddockbruins.com/page/3315.

This Tuesday, March 1, state legislation goes into effect that allows parents/guardians to elect for their children to not wear a mask in schools. As a school division, we continue to be concerned about the health of our Fairfax community and strongly recommend that all students continue to participate in universal masking for the protection of students and staff with health concerns.  However, masks will no longer be required while indoors or on buses.
