Lemon Road Community News 3.25.22

Message from Mrs. Castillo

Area Band

Our lions looked SHARP on Tuesday for spring photos.  Thank you to our PTA board members for your help making the day go as smoothly as possible.   Today our students showed their spirit and celebrated March birthdays with Skittles Day!  We aren’t sure which grade showed the most spirit, but it was a colorful day all around.  Finally, we are proud that many of our 6th grade band students had the opportunity to highlight their skills at the McLean or Kilmer Honor Area Band Concert.  See photos above from one event recently.

We are just a week away from the end of the 3rd quarter and the beginning of April. Mrs. Castillo and Ms. Ulsh have been visiting each class reminding about FCPS Student Rights & Responsibilities.   With only 4 full school days left before spring break, please remind your children of your expectations for them in school.  We have had an uptick in discipline referrals and we want your children to go into spring break with their best foot forward.

On Thursday, we cannot wait to welcome our lion cubs for Kindergarten Orientation.  A gentle reminder to ensure that you have returned your intention form and have begun the registration process if you have a rising kindergartener!  Our lions will release at 1:00 on Thursday for the 2-Hour Early Release and enjoy a day at home Friday for the Teacher Work Day leading up to Spring Break.

Enjoy the spring weather and we hope to see you tomorrow for the garden event! ~ Mrs. Castillo

Parent Reminders:

  • Complete and return the Student Intention Form
  • Complete the LRES Principal Evaluation Input Survey and LRES Family Engagement Survey emailed to all parents

Gardening Event - TOMORROW

Garden

Come help the Lemon Road community plant our rain garden and help remove invasive plants between 9:30-11:30 AM.  Meet at the top of LRES hill behind the school.  This will support our pollinators and wildlife with native plants, reduce erosion, and block invasive plants from moving in.  Use this link for the Volunteer Day registration: https://volunteer.fairfaxcounty.gov/custom/1380/opp_details/187489

LRES SOL Testing

SOL

Students in grades 3-6 participate in end-of-year testing required by the state of Virginia, called the Standards of Learning (SOL) tests. We ask that you please avoid any appointments or trips that may interrupt your child’s testing days to the greatest extent possible.

What are Expedited Retakes?  The Virginia Board of Education allows elementary and middle school students who fail Standards of Learning (SOL) tests by a narrow margin to retake the test before the end of the school year. Retesting is available when a student fails their first attempt with a score of 375-399 (400 is passing).  Parent permission is required for any retests for students in grades 3-8. The SOL Retake Permission Forms were sent home in Wednesday Folders - please return the form to your child’s teacher by/before April 22nd.

Positivity Project: Humor

Humor

Humor means that you like to laugh and bring smiles to other people. It is a sense of playfulness and lightness. A way of looking at and describing the world that brings laughter to people. A person with the strength of humor is skilled at seeing the funny side of things, bringing smiles and laughter to others, and identifying and communicating the absurdities in life. People with this strength don’t specifically need to be joke tellers, although many are.
