Terra Centre Updates 04/01/22

April clip art

Terra Centre Families,

As we prepare to take a break and spend time with loved ones, we want to remind everyone to unplug and reconnect with one another. We have been on quite a journey and now is the time to share in each other's company. We have asked our teachers to not assign any homework over the break so students can disconnect from some of the pressures of the school day and enjoy some family activities.

Whether you are traveling or staying at home, we wish you a relaxing and restful spring break. We look forward to having students return on Monday, April 11th as we gear up for the fourth and final quarter of the school year!

Please scroll below for current events, updates, and reminders.

Enjoy your weekend!

FCPS 2021-22 School Year Calendar

Attendance Matters

This year, Spring Break is April 4-April 8. We are eager to welcome your children back in school on April 11.  Their attendance is very important.  Teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning.

  • Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong.
  • According to a recent student of elementary and middle schools, there’s a 5.8% difference between April and June attendance rates.  In struggling schools, the attendance drop is nearly twice that.  Let's work together to end the school year with success.

HOW CAN YOU HELP YOUR CHILD HAVE GOOD ATTENDANCE?

  • Don’t let your child stay home unless she is truly sick. Keep in mind complaints of a stomachache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make her feel comfortable and excited about learning.
  • Talk to teachers if you notice sudden changes in behavior. These could be tied to something going on at school.
  • Check on your child’s attendance to be sure absences are not piling up.
  • Ask for help from school officials, afterschool programs, other parents or community agencies if you’re having trouble getting your child to school.

2022 SOL Testing Schedule

The SOL schedule for all students in Grades 3-6 is listed below. All SOLs will begin at 9:00 a.m. Please try and avoid appointments on the morning of the scheduled test day, when possible. Thank you in advance for helping your child do their best by reinforcing a good night's sleep and healthy breakfast on test dates. Students will continue their preparations throughout the upcoming spring.

4/25: 5th and 6th reading

4/28: 3rd and 4th reading

5/3: 5th science and 6th math

5/5: 3rd and 4th math

Ramadan

Ramadan Mubarak to those in our Terra Centre community who celebrate! Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year, a time for spiritual discipline for Muslims, who believe it was during this month that God revealed the first verses of the Quran to Mohammed. #OurFCPS @FCPSnews

Scholastic Book Fair

We’re excited to invite you to our upcoming Scholastic Book Fair. This event is an opportunity for students of all ages to build their home libraries and further their love of reading.  As always, all purchases benefit our school library.  We appreciate your support throughout the years! Here’s what you need to know about the Fair, which will take place from Monday, April 18, 2022 through Friday, April 22, 2022 in the Terra Centre Elementary library!

  • When are you open for purchases?   Tues./Wed./Thurs.- 8:15am-4:00pm; Fri.- 8:15am-12:00pm We are also open on Thurs. evening from 5:00-6:30pm during our family night event. (Students must discuss a time that is convenient with their classroom teacher -such as during a break- if they’re shopping during the school day.)
  • Can I have more info about family night? Book Fair Family Night will take place on Thursday, April 21, 2021 from 5:00-6:30pm in the library. This is an opportunity to shop the fair together with your family. You will have a chance to view our “Book Wishes” display & select and gift a book to your child’s teacher for their class library.  Also, new this year: the PTA will also be hosting a Bingo and BBQ event, so there is even more fun going on at TCES that evening!
  • Can I help out? Yes! Please! We need adult volunteers to help the Scholastic Book Fair run smoothly. We’re looking for volunteers to help students both during the school day AND during our family night event. Please click on the volunteer link on our Book Fair website: https://www.scholastic.com/bf/tctigers. Thanks!
  • What types of payments are accepted?: For adults shopping the fair, we accept eWallet, cash, credit cards, and personal checks made out to Terra Centre ES (NOT Scholastic). For kids shopping the fair alone during the school day, we accept cash and eWallet. What is Scholastic eWallet? It’s a convenient digital account that your child can use for shopping at our Fair!  Start at our Book Fair website: https://www.scholastic.com/bf/tctigers.
  • Prefer to shop at home? Shop online at our fair website. All orders ship directly to your home (there is no option to buy online and pick up at school), and shipping is free for orders over $25.

I am so excited for this exciting time of year!  Reach out with any questions at aepetruzzell@fcps.edu. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at the Book Fair! Happy reading, Ms. Allison Petruzzellis (she/her) Librarian, Terra Centre Elementary School Chairperson, Scholastic Book Fair
