Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

Back on September 8, 2021, an email explaining the SEL screening was sent to parents via email.  For more information, including a short video about the SEL screener in FCPS and the screener questions, can be found on the SEL Screener webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/node/43892).

Students in grades 3-12 will be screened in the fall, winter, and spring. In these grade levels, students will reflect and report on their own skills and experiences. Screener data will only be accessible to teachers, administrators, and staff with legitimate educational interests. Results will be maintained in secure files and databases accessible only to these individuals. Screener results will be used with other data to inform practices for SEL skill development and mental wellness. Screener data will also help staff plan interventions for students with identified needs. Parents and guardians will receive an individualized report regarding their student’s screener results following each assessment window. School staff will be available to discuss results with families on planned support.

Katherine Johnson Middle School will administer the Spring SEL Screener on April 14, 2022 through the student’s TA period. You can view the full text of the SEL Screener questions by clicking on this link.  If you do not want your student to take part in the SEL screener and/or need translation of this letter and the opt-out form, please click here.

Please contact your student’s school counselor if you have any questions.

Kuddos to the KJMS Choral Department!!

Congratulations to the KJMS Choral Department on their participation in VCDA Choral Assessment this past weekend!  District XI Choral Assessments were held at Woodson High School, where members of Basso Chorus, Vocal Ensemble and Bella Canzone all performed.  Three adjudicators assessed the choirs in tone, intonation, diction, rhythm, artistry, balance/blend, and general effect as they performed.  In addition to performance, choirs were also assessed on their sight-reading abilities.  The judges praised KJMS choirs for their energy and stage presence, beautiful balance and blend, and diction.  Our choirs were awarded Excellent and Superior ratings overall, the highest praise a choir can receive at assessment!  Congratulations to all chorus members in the KJMS Choral Department!
