Welcome Spring

Dear Dranesville Families,

I hope you are getting out to enjoy all of the signs of spring.  The Cherry Blossoms have just started to bloom in Great Falls and the bluebells are just appearing along the Potomac.  All kinds of fun, family activities are being planned by our school communities– fun fairs, golf fundraisers, art exhibits, etc.–and spring sports are underway.   I was happy to attend the Springhill ES Fun Fair on Saturday and enjoyed talking with so many families and staff that are having a wonderful experience at that school.  It was also nice to meet so many Cooper and Langley students that were excited to volunteer at their alma mater.

I was happy to once again be a judge for that other harbinger of spring, the Regional Science Fair.  I am always amazed at the wide array of study our students are engaged in and congratulate our young scientists and their mentors on a job well done.

I was happy to visit Chesterbrook ES last week and to see the culture of student empowerment there.  I had great questions from students on lunch offerings and playground rules. I understand that through student efforts, lunch has already improved!  Great Falls ES Japanese Immersion students just finished their calligraphy projects and were proud to show those off when I was there. I enjoyed learning about Holi with Mrs. Bradshaw's second graders. Hutchison ES literacy specialists and I had a great discussion on the ground breaking work that they are doing to train all teachers in best practices in the teaching of reading.  The school’s ESSER funds are being well spent to support this effort.

FCPS was proud to host Michael Regan, the Administrator of the EPA, last week at Flint Hill ES.  We had Dranesville students from McLean and Marshall HS in attendance as we highlighted the work our students are doing to enhance environmental sustainability in their communities and the work of our transportation team to build our electric bus fleet. A huge thank you to all of our staff members that made this event possible.

I will be continuing school visits over the next weeks as we also hopefully finalize our search for a new Superintendent and continue work on the budget.  Please attend the budget town hall with myself and Supervisor John Foust next Thursday.

Have a wonderful weekend and a nice spring break,

Elaine

495 Next Project

The 495 NEXT project is extending the Capital Beltway express lanes two and a half miles from the Dulles Toll Road interchange to the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

In addition to the extension of the Express Lanes, the project includes a number of critical infrastructure investments along the GW Memorial Parkway corridor, including:

  •  4 miles of bike and pedestrian trails connecting McLean to Tysons
  •  New stormwater management facilities for this section of I-495

With the planning study completed, the project now moves toward the design and construction phase. Initial field work is underway and major construction is anticipated to begin in mid 2022, with the lanes opening in late 2025 and completion in 2026.

This project is a public-private partnership between VDOT and Transurban, which has engaged Lane Construction to design and build the facility. Fairfax Water Spring Flushing Program

Each Spring, Fairfax Water conducts its routine water main flushing program, which helps maintain the high quality of water in the distribution system. Flushing may result in temporary discoloration and the presence of sediment in the water. These conditions are not harmful and should be of very short duration. This is best resolved by letting the water run until it clears up. During this flushing period, a slight change is made in the disinfectant used by switching from chloramines to chlorine. As a result, you may notice a chlorine taste and odor in water during this time. The water is safe to drink.

The flushing program and disinfectant switch are scheduled to begin on March 21, 2022, and last through June 13, 2022. For more information on this program, please visit the Fairfax Water Internet site here.
