From the desk of Mr. Smith!

A big thank you to our PTA and all of our families and staff who participated in Bingo Night last Friday.  We had a great turnout and lots of fun!

As a reminder, students will be dismissed two hours (1:45 pm) early on Thursday, March 31, the last day of the third quarter. Friday, April 1, is a teacher workday and a holiday for students. April 4-8 is spring break. Schools and school offices will be closed. See the complete 2021-22 school year calendar.

Some highlights from this past week:

  • 4th grade students used Kahoot! to demonstrate their knowledge of the oceans. 
  •  5th grade students explored how to identify vascular and non-vascular plants as well as which plants are native to Virginia.

Lost and Found

Are your children missing any clothing?  Our lost and found is in the main lobby next to the staircase.  Please stop by to take a look if you are missing something before Thursday, March 31st.  After March 31st, anything left will be packed up and donated.

Get More involved in PTA for 2022-2023

It is time once again for the PTA Nominating Committee to recruit candidates for next year's PTA Board and committees. Being in a PTA leadership position is rewarding, important and fun! The Board is a great way to get involved at Daniels Run, get to know our staff and admins, work with other parents, and support our students and school community. Please join us! 6th Grade Party Volunteers Needed

Each year, we celebrate our sixth graders on all their hard work over the past 7 years of elementary school. There is typically a party held at the end of the school year and a few other celebratory events.  In order to provide this fun activity for the children, we will need sixth grade parent volunteers to help plan, fundraise and execute the party. We are also looking for a couple of fifth grade parents to join the committee, to get a headstart on what is needed for next year! If you are interested in helping with this endeavor, please email dresixthgradeparty2022@gmail.com. We will hold our first group meeting right after Spring Break in order to form working groups. 


Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Screening for School-Based (Level II-III) Services

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners.

Screening for Levels II-III

Students can be screened for school-based (level II-III) AAP services at any time in the school year. In the spring, local schools review data on all students to determine services for the start of the next school year.

·       Parents or guardians can initiate the screening process by submitting the AAP School-Based Services (Level II-III) Referral Form to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART) or Assistant Principal by April 15, annually.

·       The AAP School-Based Services (Level II-III) Referral Form may be found at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/academic-overview/advanced-academic-programs-aap/advanced- academic-program-aap-forms or by searching “AAP Forms” at https://www.fcps.edu/.

·       Parents or guardians who submit a referral will be notified by the local elementary school of their student’s eligibility status by early June.

Screening Process for Levels II-III

Multiple criteria are reviewed holistically to determine eligibility for all FCPS advanced academic services. Committees consider student work from opportunities with AAP lessons, examples of student reasoning or gifted behaviors from class discussions and activities, progress reports, achievement and ability scores, and parent or guardian input. Committees consider whether students have access to a group of students with similar academic needs to support academic conversations and growth in the classroom.

Appeals Process for Levels II-III

If a parent or guardian wishes to appeal an ineligible decision, they may submit an appeal with new data for consideration by the local school screening committee. This new information should be submitted to the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher or Assistant Principal.

School-Based Services Overview

School-Based Services in Elementary School

FCPS offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in Grades K-12. The continuum of services approach allows for a focus on matching services to students’ needs rather than labeling students. Students have:

·       Multiple entry points for deeper learning opportunities in specific areas of need as they develop.

·       A cluster group of students with similar academic needs to support student learning and growth.

Teachers, administrators, and Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of school-based services at the elementary level:

Tier 1 Access to AAP Curriculum and Strategies, Grades K-6 (Level I)

All students have opportunities to think critically, reason, and problem-solve.

  • All teachers use critical and creative thinking strategies in their lessons
  • Classroom teachers provide opportunities using materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework a minimum of once per quarter.

Because Level I services are for all FCPS students, there is not a screening process.

Differentiated Lessons in Areas of Academic Strength, Grades K-6 (Level II)

Some students require differentiation beyond the needs of age-level peers in their class in at least one specific subject area. Classroom teachers may adjust instruction for students in these areas by:

  • Providing different assignments and resources using materials from the AAP Curriculum
  • Grouping students by their strengths, interests, and

Level II Services are re-evaluated each year and may change from year to year.

Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-6 (Level III)

Some students have advanced academic abilities in multiple subject areas and require differentiation beyond the needs of age-level peers in their class in multiple content areas.

  • Students work with other students that have similar academic needs through weekly pull-out classes or weekly co-taught lessons with the AART and classroom teacher.
  • Teachers provide frequent opportunities to use materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in Language Arts, science, social studies, and/or mathematics.

Level III services continue through Grade 6. Students do not need to be evaluated each year.

Screening Timeline for Level IV

Screening for level IV AAP services happens at the district/central level rather than by local schools. For your planning for next school year, please know that screening for Level IV services occurs during two specific screening cycles:

  • Fall screening is available for students who are new to FCPS since
    • Fall referrals are due in early October (contact the AART for more information).
  • Spring screening is available for any Grade 2-7 FCPS-enrolled
    • The referral window is from the first day of school - December 15,

Full-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-8 (Level IV)

Some students require regular advanced differentiation beyond the needs of age-level peers in their class in all four core content areas (Language Arts, mathematics, social studies, and science) and on a full-time basis. Students identified for level IV AAP require depth, complexity, and/or acceleration beyond the needs of their age-level peers at their current setting.


Students eligible for full-time AAP services are cluster grouped on a full-time basis and receive:

  • Full-time use of materials from the AAP Curriculum Framework in Language Arts, mathematics, science, and social studies curriculum, and
  • Increased intensity of depth, complexity, and acceleration compared to the needs of age-level peers in their current setting.

Level IV services continue through Grade 8. Students do not need to be evaluated each yea


 All FCPS students will soon have unlimited access to online tutoring support services through Tutor.com at no cost.

Students can connect online any time, and in most subjects for as long as they need. Tutoring is focused instruction provided to students in a one-on-one format through voice or text chat. Tutors will focus on developing students’ strengths and capabilities in reading, mathematics, or other specified subjects. Tutoring services may be accessed before, during, or after school hours and/or on weekends through a link in Schoology. 

All tutors must pass a rigorous application process including an extensive background check. No personal information is shared between a student and tutor. All sessions are recorded and transcripts are available for review by teachers and parents/guardians. 

Students will automatically have access to the Tutor.com tutoring service unless a parent/guardian submits an opt-out request.  Please submit the opt-out request by April 11th. An email from FCPS went to all families yesterday with information on the program and the link to the opt-out form.  A hard copy of the opt-out form will go home in the Wednesday folders today.  For additional information, visit the FCPS online tutoring services website.

FLE Information!

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms will be included in your child’s back-to-school/orientation packets and are available online for Elementary (K-6) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/elementary-family-life-education , Middle School (7-8) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/middle-school-academics-7-8/family-life-education-fle, and High School (9-12) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/high-school-academics-9-12/family-life-education-fle.  Please fill in the opt-out form and return it to your child’s school prior to Family Life Education instruction.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) , Middle School (7-8) , and High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in Schoology.  Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account.  Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the City of Fairfax Regional Library (this location does not have media).  Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Electronic Device Policy 

Phones must be silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day. They may be utilized on campus only before and after school. Teachers may allow usage of cell phones for instructional activities where they are the most appropriate tool, such as video creation or QR Code activities.  

Counselor's Corner

Hello Daniels Run Families,

March promises to bring us all much needed warmth and sun as we say good bye to winter cold.   This month, the counselors will wrap up our Monday morning Second Step video lessons focused on Emotion Management.  Ask your child about the 3 steps to dealing with big feelings —"Stop, Name Your Feeling, Calm down.”  After spring break,  Second Step lessons will focus on the steps of Social Problem Solving.    Also during March, Mrs. Fisher and I will also hold in-person lessons in grades K-3 to help students with career exploration.  Each student will create a career exploration artifact for their Academic and Career Portfolios.

March will also be a big month for Service Learning.  The 3rd grades will wrap  up their month-long coordination of the donation drive for Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation on Friday, March 18th.  As of the end of February, our school has collected more than 121 pounds of towels, newspapers, dog and cat food, and cleaning supplies.  We will update you on the total amount of donations in our April counselor corner.  In addition to supplies to care for homeless dogs and cats, our 4th graders will complete a service project the week of March 14th involving the crafting of dog and cat toys.  Toys are an important tool for helping homeless animals learn how to socialize with humans and to provide mental stimulation.  We are so lucky to have an enthusiastic group of 4th graders to complete this service-learning project and we hope that all the 3rd and 4th graders were able to engage in  a little perspective taking as they thought about the needs of  others.  Looking ahead, our Enhanced Autism students will complete a service-project in April in conjunction with Autism Awareness month.  Stay tuned for more information on that next month.

Attendance Matters!

  • Every year, absences spike in the weeks before and after spring break. It’s time to break that cycle. 
  • Make sure your child is in school every day, right up until vacation starts. Our teachers will be teaching, and our students will be learning. But it’s harder to teach and it’s harder to learn when too many students are absent.
  • Please remember, April 1 is a student holiday and Spring Break is      April 4-8 We are eager to welcome your children back in school on     April 11. 


All sixth graders will be given a complimentary copy of the yearbook at no charge.

Reminder! Animals on School Grounds

George Mason University College of Science and Pinnacle Academy are excited to announce that the Northern Virginia Elementary and Middle Science and Engineering Fair (NVSE Fair) is virtual for 2022. The fair is scheduled for Saturday, April 16th, 2022,

The parent/teacher Zoom sessions will provide an overview of project requirements, the virtual platform/s, and the day-of schedule and expectations. Student projects will be judged in two categories: Life and Earth Sciences (LES) or Physical Science and Engineering (PSE). There are three divisions per category: Div I (grades 1-3), Div II (grades 4-5), and Div III (grades 6-8).

Prizes will be awarded in each category and division. For 2022, in addition to the annual Broadcom Masters awards, two new middle school awards have been announced along with the DOD STEM Leadership award.

The NVSE Fair is in its 8th year. The event encompasses elementary and middle schools in Washington, DC, Loudoun, and Fairfax. Elementary schools in Arlington County, Prince William, and Manassas are encouraged to participate. Middle school students participating in the Northern Virginia Regional Science and Engineering Fair (Falls Church, Arlington, Alexandria) and the Prince William-Manassas Science Fair are ineligible for this competition.
