Despite the gloomy weather last week, our fourth graders were able to enjoy a full and fun field trip to Mount Vernon. The site of George Washington’s home and farm, students got to know about life in the 1700s for the military General and first U.S. president. In this photo, students are practicing the custom of bowing to greet a lady. The girls then practiced their curtseys for the gentlemen.

Outdoor Learning Spaces
Keep an eye out for new and improved outdoor spaces around Weyanoke this Spring. Weyanoke has received a grant from Fairfax County Federation of Teachers to create and enhance our outdoor learning spaces. With this grant, Weyanoke will be enhancing their garden areas. Volunteers from St. Michael’s Church have done an amazing job to maintain our Native Species Garden. With this grant and with the help of the PTA, we will be planting new plants, enhancing the beauty of the already existing Garden.
Weyanoke has also received 5 new planting beds for classrooms to use and include with their hands-on science curriculums. Be on the lookout for more information regarding a family gardening day soon with the PTA.
Most excitingly, with this grant and the funds raised during the Boosterthon in 2019, Weyanoke will be creating an Outdoor Classroom. This outdoor classroom will allow students to interact with their environment using inquisitive observation skills to enhance their natural scientific abilities.
If you would like to help or be a part of creating these spaces, you can contact Mrs. Otaizo, the STEAM teacher, with any questions or inquiries. raotaizo@fcps.edu
