Message from Dr. Smith

Hello Bruin Families,

In the coming week, there are several events occurring to include the ending of our 3rd quarter.  On Tuesday, March 29, we are celebrating Culture Appreciation Day and hope to see families at 7:00 pm in the Little Theater for the International Show.  Wednesday night, March 30, we are having a virtual meeting for families to learn about the eHall Pass pilot we will be participating in for the 4th quarter. If you have questions, please submit them to the eHallPass Padlet.  Thursday is the last day of the quarter and an early release day. Also, middle school students will be participating in the Team Day Challenge during the last block of the day.  The schedule for the early release is below.

In case you missed my letter to the community on Tuesday, I announced that I’ll be leaving Lake Braddock Secondary School next month to serve in another Virginia school division. This decision has been difficult and not one that I have taken lightly, but I am confident in the strong leadership of our school, our region and our community to continue to lead forward and make Lake Braddock the very best.

The Region 4 Office shared today that Ms. Lindsey Kearns has agreed to serve as the acting principal until the principal position is filled, and Ms. Teri Hampton will step back into the role of associate principal. Please join me in thanking them for continuing their service to the Lake Braddock community in these new roles.

I look forward to the events this coming week and interacting with our families.  As we finish out the quarter, please reach out to your child’s teachers, counselor or Subschool Principal for any support you might need.

Go Bruins!

Daniel W. Smith, Ed.D.

Online Tutoring Support Services/Opt-Out Information

Earlier this week, you should have received an email from FCPS regarding the new online tutoring services.

FCPS is excited to share a great opportunity that is available to all FCPS students! Your child will soon have unlimited access to 24/7, on-demand, online tutoring support services through Tutor.com. Students can connect online any time, any place, and in most subjects for however long they need. Tutoring may be on-demand and/or scheduled at a time convenient for the student and/or family.

Tutoring is focused instruction provided to students in a one-on-one format (voice and/or text chat). Tutors will focus on developing your student’s strengths and capabilities in reading, mathematics, or other specified subjects. Tutoring services may be accessed before, during or after school hours and/or weekends.

Opt-Out Information

Students will be able to access Tutor.com through a link in Schoology beginning mid-April, 2022. Your student will automatically have access to the Tutor.com tutoring service unless you submit an opt-out request. If you do not want your student to have access to this online tutoring resource, complete the opt-out via ParentVUE by April 11, 2022.  Directions for opting out can be found on the Online Tutoring Services website. If you are unable to opt-out via ParentVUE, submit the hard copy form that will be sent home by your school. You may also opt your student out of Tutor.com tutoring service at a later date via ParentVUE or by submitting a request to your student's school.

Safe Routes to School Program Update

Spring is here, and this means more students will be walking and biking to school as the weather continues to warm up.  Please be on the lookout for students on our crosswalks, and please observe all traffic rules, especially slowing down in the school zone and in our parking lots!

Our committee is busily working to increase the number of students who walk or roll/bike to school, and to ensure that everyone (staff included!) has a safe route to school.  We are looking for student, staff, parent and community volunteers who are passionate about safety, fitness, community building or nature to join our committee.  Our next meeting is Tuesday March 29 at 7:30, via Zoom.  Please contact LBSS.SRTS@gmail.com to get more info or the zoom link.

You might have noticed some changes at the front of the school, thanks to Dr. Smith, our administrators and our volunteers.  FCPS staff installed 4 new bike racks out front last fall, and these were funded by a VDOT grant, our PTSA and by FCPS.  Our administrators, the FCPS Safety Specialist and FCPS staff helped install some additional sidewalk access ramps, and there are two new speed humps in front of Door 1 to keep our students and staff safe as they enter the school.  The Walking Audit conducted last November with the help of FCPS Safe Routes to School Coordinator Sally Smallwood was a great way to kick off our program, and we are looking forward to making the area around Lake Braddock safer and more welcoming to students who walk or roll to school.

In April, please look for both student and parent surveys!  In order to apply for more grant funding and infrastructure changes, we need data to support our applications!  These surveys, which will be sent to students via Schoology and to parents via weekly news, will only take a few moments, but are super important for informing our efforts!

Upcoming Safe Routes to School Events:
Every Wednesday is Walk to School Wednesday!
March 30 is National Take a Walk in the Park Day.  Can you find a park near your route to or from school?
April 22 is Earth Day.  Safe Routes to School goals are also Green Goals.  Fewer cars near our school means cleaner air and a safer commute.
May 4 is National Bike and Roll to School Day!

military

April is Month of the Military Child

Each year, our nation designates April as the Month of the Military Child to recognize and thank children from military families for the sacrifices they make living the military lifestyle.  The recognition is part of the legacy of former Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger who established the commemoration in 1986.  During the month, one day is selected as the day to “Purple Up! For Military Kids” and all are encouraged to wear purple in recognition of the strength and sacrifices of military-connected youth (MCY).  Why purple?  Purple is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military, as it is the combination of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine red, and Navy blue.  This year, Purple Up! Day is April 20.

FCPS and Lake Braddock is proud to recognize all military-connected children this April during Month of the Military Child. Each year we join our country in celebrating the resiliency of military-connected children for their tremendous service and sacrifice at home in the U.S. and overseas.

StreamIn/CheckIn Available for Students in COVID-19 Isolation

StreamIn/CheckIn has been in place since the fall to help make sure students are able to access their classes when absent due to COVID-19. Recent changes to health guidance lead to adjustments to the StreamIn/CheckIn option.

This option is now available only for students who are isolated (COVID positive) due to COVID-19. These students may be out of school for up to 10 days. Participating in StreamIn/CheckIn helps them be ready to jump back into classes without missing a beat. For more information, visit our website

ehallpass

Virtual Townhall March 30 for e-Hallpass Implementation at Lake Braddock

Lake Braddock Secondary School is committed to providing our students with a safe and secure learning environment. This school year has presented us with new challenges and we have seen a need to reexamine some of our practices. Lake Braddock will be piloting e-Hallpass in the spring of 2022 with a group of our students and teachers with a plan to consider it for implementation school-wide in 2022-2023.

In an effort to answer parents' questions we will be providing a virtual town hall on Wednesday March 30th at 7:00 pm for parents to hear more about e-Hallpass and how we will be implementing it at Lake Braddock. Parents can access the zoom link for the town hall through the parent course on Schoology and can submit questions prior to the townhall using our eHallPass Padlet.

How to Stay In Touch

Please stay in touch with us throughout the year by:

Attendance Lines

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS:

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS:

Procedures for Picking Up a Student Early

  • Prior to 8:00 a.m., the student must present a note from the parent to their subschool office. Notes must include time of dismissal, reason for leaving, and a contact number. Parents of middle school students must also include the name of the person picking the student up. Please note that this person must be listed as an emergency contact. At the time of early check-out, middle school parents must come in Entrance 1 and meet their student at the security desk. Anyone picking up a middle school student must bring a photo ID with them. High school parents may pick up students outside Entrance 1.
  • Notes are strongly preferred for early check-out, but if a parent is unable to send a note with the student, the parent should call the subschool office as early as possible. All calls will be confirmed by callback to a phone number on the emergency care card. Regrettably, if the parent did not send a note with the student, the parent will be required to park, come into the school to furnish a note, and pick up the student. Without advance notice provided by a note, there may be a wait until our staff is able to locate the student, particularly if the student is at lunch or in a physical education class. We further regret that without advance notice, we are unable to accommodate requests for early dismissal after 2:15 pm.
  • In either case, students must check out at the subschool office when leaving school and check in with the security desk upon return. Students who leave school without checking out properly will be marked unexcused and may face disciplinary action (if returning to school, students are also subject to search). Students must contact all teachers of any class to be missed.

Read our full Attendance procedures at our website.

Late Bus Information

Late bus days are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Buses will pick up students in the front of the building with a departure time of approximately 4:45 pm.  Please check  StudentVue and ParentVue for your student's late bus number and stop. If you have any questions, please contact your student's appropriate subschool.
