Weekly Newsletter for March 23, 2022

Family Newsletter for March 23

It is hard to believe we are almost to the end of the 3rd quarter. The quarter ends next Thursday, March 31, and students will be dismissed at 1:30. There is no school for a Teacher Workday on Friday, April 1, and Spring Break is the following week. Students return to school on Monday, April 11.

As a reminder, the SOL schedule for grades 3-6 is printed at the end of this newsletter. Please try to ensure your child does not have scheduled appointments or is away from school on their scheduled test dates.

We are excited to share a new resource that will soon be available to all students to support learning. All FCPS students will have unlimited access to online tutoring support services through Tutor.com at no cost.

Students can connect online anytime, and in most subjects for as long as they need. Tutoring is focused instruction provided to students in a one-on-one format through voice or text chat. Tutors will focus on developing students’ strengths and capabilities in reading, mathematics, or other specified subjects. Tutoring services may be accessed before, during, or after school hours and/or on weekends through a link in Schoology.

All tutors must pass a rigorous application process including an extensive background check. No personal information is shared between a student and tutor. All sessions are recorded and transcripts are available for review by teachers and parents/guardians.

Students will automatically have access to the Tutor.com tutoring service unless a parent/guardian submits an opt-out request. Watch for an email  that will include the online tutoring services notice and opt-out information. Additionally, a hard copy form will be sent home with your child in this week's Friday folder.

For additional information, visit our online tutoring services website. As always, please contact us if you have any questions.

Have a good rest of the week,

The UMES Admin Team

Our SCA is currently organizing a drive to support WFCM by collecting baby wipes and vegetable oil. These are two items that are critically needed and students should bring their donation to the stage in the front lobby. The drive runs until Thursday, March 31. Thank you for your support!

Family Engagement Survey Closes April 3

Several pictures of parents and children, all wearing masks.

FCPS is partnering with independent firm K12 Insight to administer its second Family Engagement Survey to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs in our school communities. Topics include:

  • Welcoming environment
  • Communication
  • Student success
  • Advocacy
  • Family and school partnerships
  • Collaboration with the community to see if FCPS is meeting its goals at the school, region, and division levels.

Results will be used to develop a plan to improve family and school partnerships throughout the division. The survey will be available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, Arabic, Chinese, Urdu, Farsi, and Amharic. For more information, watch this short video from Superintendent Brabrand and visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage. (Please use Chrome to open these links.)

FCPS Cares

FCPS CARES is an opportunity for staff, parents, students, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others. Every month, a nominated employee from each region and Central Offices will be recognized as an FCPS CARES of the Month recipient. The county shares their names in Employee News, and they also have access to a new FCPS CARES banner for their profile photo in Outlook. Watch this video to learn more about FCPS CARES. If you would like to acknowledge a staff member who has gone above and beyond, please consider nominating them for FCPS Cares recognition. (Please use Chrome when opening the links above.)
