Churchill Chatter - Issue 15, March 18, 2022

butterfly

Spring is here. Ms. Finger's second graders release their monarchs in the school's bird and butterfly garden.

Dear Churchill Road families,

What a difference a week makes, with the change to daylight savings time bringing more daylight and the spring weather finally pushing winter aside.

Earlier this week, our second graders released their monarch butterflies into our beautiful bird and butterfly garden.  This afternoon, our sixth graders presented their inquiry research projects to their classmates and via zoom link to parents and family members.

We already are hard at work planning for the 2022-2023 school year.  Churchill Road families may assist in this process by sharing information about their students.  We have created a form, linked below, for families to use; the deadline for submission of this optional form is May 1, 2022.

Next Wednesday at 6 p.m., the Churchill Road Wellness is offering a virtual parent engagement opportunity to learn more about Responsive Classroom and how this approach to learning can be adapted and similar language implement at home.  We hope that you are able to join us for this session. We are looking forward to the PTA Bingo next Friday evening – many thanks to the PTA and our fabulous parents for organizing these fun evenings for us.

Have you been wondering about how to better support your child with Schoology and understand how to access grades and projects?  CRS Technology Specialist Nick Kilpatrick will be leading a session for parents at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 21.  Look for more information in the upcoming weeks.

If you have a rising kindergarten student and have not yet registered for the next school year, please reach out to our registrar, Angie Kim, ackim@fcps.edu, or by calling 703-288-8400. Information on our kindergarten program is available on our website: https://churchillroades.fcps.edu/student-services/kindergarten-orientation.

We hope that you have a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,

Cherith Pierson and Jennifer Niccolls

Good Luck Mr. Butler!

Please join us in wishing CRS instructional assistant Greg Butler a wonderful retirement after nearly 10 years at Churchill.  Your students likely know Mr. Butler from the classroom. If you walk the Raymond and Churchill intersection for drop off or pick up, you might know Mr. Butler as the friendly, welcoming face of CRS. Dogs know Mr. Butler as the generous friend with a pocket of dog treats!

Mr. Butler, we appreciate your kindhearted attitude in the classroom and on the daily approach and departure from school.  We hope that you enjoy playing golf, reading and spending more time with your family as you settle into retirement.

Class Placements for 2022-2023

Every year, our staff collaborates regarding student placements for the next school year.  A variety of factors such as student personalities, friendships, and academic abilities are considered as we create our new classes.  Other factors impacting the decision-making process of student class assignments are new student enrollments and teachers moving to a new assignment.

Churchill Road families may assist in this process by sharing insights. Please note the following when providing information. We do not accept requests for specific teachers for the upcoming grade placement.  This includes hints that reference specific teachers.  We cannot guarantee friend requests nor exceptions for other students whereby there may be a conflict. We do our best to create a positive learning year for your child.

Please provide your input by submitting this form  as it will ensure we have your request.  Please do not email us additional information.  Completion of the form is optional: however, the deadline for any correspondence is May 1, 2022. Thank you for your input.

Free Online Tutoring Services for All Students Coming Soon!

All FCPS students will soon have unlimited access to online tutoring support services through Tutor.com at no cost. Funds to support Tutor.com for school year 2022-23 and 2023-24 will come from an ESSER III Unfinished Learning Grant.

Students can connect online any time, and in most subjects for as long as they need. Tutoring is focused instruction provided to students in a one-on-one format through voice or text chat. Tutors will focus on developing student’s strengths and capabilities in reading, mathematics, or other specified subjects. Tutoring services may be accessed before, during, or after school hours and/or on weekends through a link in Schoology.

All tutors must pass a rigorous application process including an extensive background check. No personal information is shared between a student and tutor. All sessions are recorded and transcripts are available for review by teachers and parents/guardians.

Students will automatically have access to the Tutor.com tutoring service unless a parent/guardian submits an opt-out request. All FCPS families will soon receive an email including an online tutoring services notice and opt-out information. Additionally, a hard copy form will be sent home with every student.

Kids Heart Challenge!  New name, same fun!

It’s time for your child to show heart! For the 21st year, CRS has again partnered with the American Heart Association to educate students about the cardiovascular system while providing information on keeping this essential body system healthy throughout life.  This year, the American Heart Association is launching the Kids Heart Challenge, formally known as Jump Rope for Heart.  Kids Heart Challenge is the same as Jump Rope for Heart, only now it aligns more with our Health and Physical Education curriculum.

This year we have set a goal of $10,000.  This follows the most successful year in school history!  The last year we participated in 2018/19 school year our students raised a record amount of $27,267!!! Churchill Road was #1 in Fairfax County and #3 in the state!  It is just another example of how our families value living a health and active lifestyle along with the generosity to help a good cause.

Kids Heart Challenge fundraiser forms were handed out to the entire student body in this week’s (3/16) VIP folder.  Students who choose to participate in the fundraiser will have the opportunity to earn Thank You gifts from the American Heart Association while helping millions across the United States through the American Heart Association.  We are again going 100% online donations this year.  Easy to follow steps have been sent home in VIP folders.  The fundraiser will officially begin on Monday March 14th and end on Monday April 11, 2022.
