Morning News Show

1. Breakfast at Woodson

The breakfast lines open from 7:35 - 8:05am in Cafeteria A.

If a bus is late, students may still go to get breakfast, however the late busses will be verified.  Some students are wandering the school, hanging out and then going to get breakfast after the 8:05am warning bell thus causing tardies for their first period class.

2. 2022 Fairfax County Teen Job Fair - This Weekend

FCPS high school students looking for their first part-time job, summer and seasonal job opportunities, or who want more information about potential career pathways, are invited to attend one of two upcoming teen job fairs and resume building workshops. Local businesses and agencies will be on hand to offer a range of opportunities including part-time employment, internships, and volunteer work for prospective students.

Volunteer opportunities and resume building workshops will also be available for younger students. The final job fair will be held on Saturday, March 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Chantilly High School.

Environmental Club

3. Environmental Club Expands Woodson Garden

Woodson's biology teachers worked with the Environmental Club to expand our garden using soil donated by Virginia Tech in partnership with the Fairfax Food Council and the Urban Agriculture Work Group.

All produce will be donated to a local food bank called Food for Others. Over 250 pounds of produce were donated last year before the expansion so we have high hopes or a much larger yield this year.

4. Woodson 5K

It’s time to register for the 12th Annual Woodson 5k Community Walk/Run on Saturday, April 30th at 8:30am at Woodson HS.  All proceeds benefit The Trevor Project, which is the leading advocate for LGBTQ youth mental health in the United States.

Members of the Woodson Community can register for $25 through on-line or mail-in registration forms before April 15. The price increases to $35 after April 15. 

Woodson students and staff can register for just $20 – only through MySchoolBucks.

Registration will take place up until race time. The event begins and ends outside of entrance #1. Every participant receives a Woodson 5K shirt.

5. Spring Sale on Athletic Booster Passes

The Woodson Athletic Boosters are having a Spring Sale on Booster Passes. 

To purchase your Spring Sale pass and to see the Spring game schedules, visit the Woodson Sports website. 

6. FanQuest Rescheduled!

FanQuest has been rescheduled to Saturday, April 30th at Woodson HS.  Come out and watch Woodson’s Special Olympics Unified Basketball team play Robinson Secondary School! 

Unified is a model of Special Olympics where student athletes with disabilities and their same-aged peers play alongside one another on one unified team. This differs from Special Olympics because that model only has athletes with disabilities. With the support from our Woodson Buddies and Partnership class, Woodson HS has a strong Unified team and we participate in Soccer, Basketball and Track and Field. FanQuest is the culminating event for both Special Olympics and Unified Basketball.

7. College & Career Center News

Model Congress

Students in US Government participate in Model Congress, a student-led Congressional session where seniors spend time marking up, debating, and voting on bills they create while dressed in business attire.

8. Virtual Appointments

Woodson is not able to provide private space in school for students to have virtual appointments with healthcare providers. If your student has a virtual appointment, please follow the same procedures for a student check-out with the attendance office.

Cav Cruise

Have you heard about Woodson's Cav Cruise All Night Graduation Party, but don't understand what the buzz is all about? Click Here to See For Yourself! Cav Cruise is a drug-free, alcohol-free all night graduation party to celebrate our Seniors! 

Your ticket includes an all night grad party with casino games, hypnotist, swimming pool, music, food, and lots of prizes! 10. Family Engagement Survey

FCPS is partnering with independent firm K12 Insight to administer the survey which is open through April 3. It will be available in English, Spanish, Arabic, Farsi, Chinese, Korean, Farsi, Urdu, and Vietnamese. All responses will be confidential.

With parent/caregiver input, the school division will be better suited to develop policies and practices that incorporate their ideas, and help focus everyone on their role in improving student achievement.

Parents will receive an email on Sunday, March 13th with an invitation and survey link from K12Insight, with subject line: FCPS Family Engagement Survey.

Survey results will be used to develop a plan to improve family and school partnerships throughout the division.

11. Order the 2022 Yearbook!

12. Student Representative to the School Board

Each year FCPS students have the opportunity to apply for the position of the student representative to the School Board. The student representative is not a member of the School Board but serves in a nonvoting, advisory capacity, representing the interests of the students of Fairfax County Public Schools. For more information on this role, see FCPS Policy 1802

Students who are currently in grades 9, 10, and 11 are eligible to apply, and they do not need to be current members of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SAC). 

Applications are due Wednesday, March 23rd. The application and related details can be found at Student Representative to the School Board.  

13. FCPS Special Education Conference on March 26th - Registration Now Open

This year’s conference will be held virtually on Saturday, March 26th, with a combination of synchronous (live) and asynchronous (recorded) sessions supporting the conference's theme: Bringing our Inclusive Community Together: Affirming, Assessing, Advancing. Welcoming ceremonies, guest speakers, FCPS presentations, and an exhibit hall are included. Registration for this free conference is now open online.

Speakers include:

  • Dr. Lisa Cullins, A Conversation About Compassion Fatigue.
  • Marlo Keller, Exceptional Family Member Program Pathways: Navigating the Halls of a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) School Move.
  • Ann Dolin, Less Policing, More Parenting: How to Improve Your Child’s Executive Functioning Skills Without All the Arguments.
  • Dr. Lisa Bateman, Reducing the Stigma Around Mental Health Challenges and How to Support Children in Asking for Help.

14. How do I check out my student from school?

Please let the Attendance Office know if you need your student to leave school early.  You can notify Attendance 3 different ways:

  • Submit the online attendance form and have your student pick up their pink checkout pass from the Attendance Office (E107) between classes or during lunch. This form must be submitted at least 30 minutes before check-out time.
  • Student brings a note to the Attendance Office before 9:45am. The student will be issued a pink pass to leave class at the appointed time. The note must include the following - student name, date and time of when student is leaving, and reason for early check-out, student ID, parent signature and contact number. 
  • Call the attendance line, 703-503-4800 and select Option 3. After leaving a message, please have your student pick up their pink checkout pass from the Attendance Office (E107) between classes or during lunch.

At the time of dismissal, your son/daughter will bring the pink check-out pass back to the Attendance Office for verification before meeting you outside. 

If returning to school that same day, students must check in at the Attendance office before going back to class, even if it is between classes.

If one of the options above is not followed, we cannot guarantee a speedy checkout, so please make sure you notify the attendance office prior to picking up your son/daughter to ensure you make your appointment or commitment on time.

Due to staff responsibilities at the end of the day, we are not able to honor unannounced early dismissals within 15 minutes of school dismissal.

15. Laptop Tech Support Hours

If students need FCPS laptop technical support at Woodson HS, please submit a ticket using the FCPS Parent/Student Tech Support Portal.

Our walk-in hours in Room A114 are: 

  • Odd Days during Learning Seminar
  • Monday - 7:45am - 8:10am
  • Tuesday and Wednesday - 11:25am - 1:20pm (lunches)
  • Wednesday - 2:55pm - 4:00pm (when late buses start)

Any other time you should try to make an appointment.

PTSO meetings take place the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 6pm in the Library at Woodson HS.
