CWES Weekly Happenings

From the Principal's Desk

lostfound

Dozens of lost items just waiting to be found outside our cafeteria.

Dear Families,

After the last gasp of winter weather this weekend, spring is in the air! That means your children won't be needing winter outerwear, so they might be less motivated to look for missing items. Please consider stopping by after school to look through the Lost and Found outside of the cafeteria. As you can see from the photo above, we have accumulated many items over the course of the winter.

This week, spring celebrations carry us through the week like a soft breeze.

Today we celebrated Pi Day (3/14) with a treat for our mathematicians in grades 4-6. The student who memorized the most digits of Pi in each class got to "Pi" their teacher in the face, and the grade level winner got to "Pi" the principal! Congratulations to the winners -- school winner sixth grader Stephan (in Ms. Freeman's class) memorized 501 digits after the decimal point! Here are just a few of the pictures of our outdoor and messy fun today.

Speaking of math, on Wednesday our first graders will celebrate the 120th day of school with a fashion show! Why 120? While kindergartners celebrated the big 100 -- the first grade curriculum builds on that number sense by counting past 100 by ones, fives and tens.

Congratulations to grade level winners Stephan (gr. 6), Alek (gr. 4) and Cooper (gr. 5)!

Wednesday evening through Thursday evening is the Jewish holiday of Purim, the Feast of Lots. Purim commemorates how Esther, Queen of Persia, saved the Jewish people by revealing her own Judaism.

Thursday is the feast day of patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick. A commemoration of the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, St. Patrick's Day was introduced to the U.S. by Irish immigrants as a celebration of Irish culture.

On Friday, we celebrate the Hindu spring festival of Holi. Also known as the Festival of Colors and the Festival of Love, Holi signifies the triumph of good over evil.

So whether you are eating Hamentaschen, Irish soda bread, or Gujiya for dessert this week, we hope you have a sweet celebration of the coming of spring!

Warm regards,

Diane Leipzig, Dr. L

Family Engagement Survey

Our Family Engagement Survey should have been emailed to you the afternoon of Sunday, March 13. Please participate—your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve FCPS’ practices to best support our students.

Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and your school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, and better social skills and behavior.

FCPS is partnering with independent firm K12 Insight to administer the survey, and it will be available in eight languages. For more information, please watch this short video from Superintendent Brabrand and visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage. Your voice matters!

A Note on Bicycles

We love that our students are learning to ride bicycles during P.E. for our bike unit!  And we love that our students are able to ride their bikes to and from school as the weather improves.

However, we now have had a fourth incident of a bicycle theft during the school day from our bicycle rack. We are in communication with the Office of Safety and Security and try to monitor throughout the day.

Please encourage your children to lock up their bicycles.

Kindergarten (& New First Grader) Orientation Activities

This year we will have TWO events to welcome our newest class of CWES Cougars!

Wednesday, March 30, 6:30 PM-7:30 PM: Parents will join our K team for a virtual presentation of our kindergarten program.

Thursday, March 31, 3:00 PM-4:15 PM: Rising kindergartners will come to our school for an in-person orientation, rotating through all of our kindergarten classrooms to experience a slice of life in kindergarten. (NOTE: This is an early release day for current students).

Rising first graders who are new to CWES next year are also welcome to join us for this in-person orientation!

Do you know a neighbor with a rising kindergartner, or a family with a rising first grader who isn't attending CWES yet?

Please encourage them to register on our website ASAP so we have accurate numbers for staffing our classes for next year!

Family Intent to Depart CWES, 2022-2023

Projecting our student enrollment next year is an important part of predicting the numbers of teachers at each grade level that we will be granted as part of the staffing process.

If you are moving out of the area or otherwise moving on from CWES, please take a moment to complete this Google Form for each of your children currently in grades K-5 who will no longer be with us next year.

On a personal note, we will miss you. But remember, once a cougar, always a cougar!
