Principal's Message

Falcon Families,

As each day passes, we are realizing the direct and indirect impacts of the last two years. One area we are noticing is with the use of technology. Two years ago, students were given “their own” devices to use for schoolwork. After two years of various settings of computer usage (independent during virtual learning, whole group, small group and independent while in school), we are seeing an increase in inappropriate usage both in and outside of the school day (mostly in 3rd-6th grades). Please join us in being vigilant and engage in conversation with your child(ren) as they use their devices at home.

Spring is right around the corner. We have some important updates and information to share with you. FCPS has recently shared the Family Engagement Survey. The purpose of this survey is to provide data to inform the Strategic Plan goal of Caring Culture and ensure that students are feeling welcome and connected in schools. Information about this survey was emailed on Friday, March 11.  The deadline to complete the survey is Friday, April 3.

As the weather continues to warm up, hopefully we will be shifting to outdoor dining. Please make sure students are dressed appropriately for the weather to ensure their comfort. We will use the same format we used in the fall and have half of each class eat outside, and the other half in the cafeteria and then switch weekly.

Lastly, if you would like to recognize a staff member for being a “High Flyer,” take a moment to fill out this google form to give them a shout out!

bathroom

Bathroom Help

Currently the boys bathroom in the 5th and 6th grade hallway is closed as more repairs are taking place. Please help us by reminding students to respect school property, and our custodian’s time by using the bathroom only for it’s intended purpose. We have recently had an increase in vandalism, graffiti and unnecessary messes throughout the day. Students that use that bathroom are currently being rerouted to the single use toilet by the gym. Thank you for your support.

Tutoring Services

FCPS students will soon have unlimited access to 24/7, on-demand, and online tutoring support services through Tutor.com.  Students will be able to connect online any time, any place, and in most subjects for however long they need. Tutoring services may be accessed before, during, or after school hours and/or weekends.

Student participation in online (voice and/or text chat) tutoring services will be completely optional. Students will be able to access Tutor.com through a link in Schoology.

More information regarding online tutoring services, parent and opt-out information, and FAQs will soon be available on the FCPS website.

Lightspeed Parent Report on Child’s Device Activity

FCPS has new tools to help parents and guardians know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided by Lightspeed, our internet content filtering service, at no cost to families. You may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites your child visited. If you want more detailed information, sign up for the Internet Use Parent Portal and log-in anytime to see more detail about your child’s browsing and “pause” access to the internet during non-school hours. Find out more and sign up for these services on our website.

Water Bottle Reminder

We are still unable to allow students to drink directly from water fountains at school. Students are allowed to use drinking fountains and bottle filling stations to refill water bottles. Please encourage your child to bring a water bottle labeled with their name daily.

Help Needed Fixing Up the Learning Gardens

Are you good with tools and free on Saturday, March 19th from 10-12? The Learning Gardens are in need of some TLC. We will be repairing the wooden raised beds, refurbishing the log seating circle, and removing the large weed (tree!) growing up through the greenhouse. Ms. Wotowiec will bring a drill and screws along with lumber to fix the beds and log benches. Extra drills are welcome, and volunteers should bring their own gloves and water. There will be no access to the school building for bathrooms. If you have any questions, please email Ms. Wotowiec @ plwotowiec@fcps.edu.
