Message from Dr. Smith

Hello Bruin Families,

This week we celebrate our Special Olympics athletes in our annual FanQuest event. Our week consisted of a Spirit Week that began with pajamas on Monday and different outfits throughout the week.  We recognized our athletes at the Pep Rally on Thursday afternoon, and also held a quick students versus staff basketball game where the students beat the staff despite their efforts.  Great job students! Today our halls were filled with purple FanQuest tshirts in support of this event. The FanQuest tailgate held before the game allowed for out clubs and organizations to be spotlighted and it created a welcoming experience for everyone before the game, and there was an opening ceremony to honor the athletes and introduce the teams.

It was wonderful to have out community come together for this amazing event after two years without it.  Thank you to all of our staff and students who put on the festivities and made this such a wonderful event!

Go Bruins!

LB Receives Recognition for the 8th Grade Bruins in Action Capstone

Stephanie Valdes, Director of Donor Relations at The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia (CFNova), presented Dr. Smith and Lake Braddock with a plaque to celebrate the 5-year anniversary of the Bruins In Action (BIA) Capstone and Lake Braddock’s innovative partnership with CFNova. The BIA Capstone is a year-long inside/outside the classroom learning experience that celebrates the end of middle school for Lake Braddock students. The Capstone allows 8th grade students to use the skills and knowledge acquired across their classes to become effective global citizens. An essential component of the Capstone challenges and empowers each student to develop an Action Plan for Change focused on a selected issue that impacts the Northern Virginia community. Also, as part of the BIA Capstone, students collect money and use a curriculum-based decision-making model to select as the recipient of those funds, a nonprofit organization that is vetted and also supported by CFNova. Eighth grade student and philanthropist, Ellie Jimenez, recently donated over $100 to add to the collective charitable funds that will be presented to CFNova at the end of this school year.

ehallpass

Virtual Townhall March 30 for e-Hallpass Implementation at Lake Braddock

Lake Braddock Secondary School is committed to providing our students with a safe and secure learning environment. This school year has presented us with new challenges and we have seen a need to reexamine some of our practices. Lake Braddock will be piloting e-Hallpass in the spring of 2022 with a group of our students and teachers with a plan to consider it for implementation school-wide in 2022-2023.

In an effort to answer parents' questions we will be providing a virtual town hall on Wednesday March 30th at 7:00 pm for parents to hear more about e-Hallpass and how we will be implementing it at Lake Braddock. Parents can access the zoom link for the town hall through the parent course on Schoology and can submit questions prior to the townhall using our eHallPass Padlet.

For more information on e-Hallpass, please check out our website or review the following resources:

All FCPS Students Will Have Unlimited Access to Online Tutoring

All FCPS students will have unlimited access to online tutoring support services through Tutor.com at no cost.  Students can connect online any time, and in most subjects for as long as they need. Tutoring is focused instruction provided to students in a one-on-one format through voice or text chat. Tutors will focus on developing students’ strengths and capabilities in reading, mathematics, or other specified subjects. Tutoring services may be accessed before, during, or after school hours and/or on weekends through a link in Schoology.

All tutors must pass a rigorous application process including an extensive background check. No personal information is shared between a student and tutor. All sessions are recorded and transcripts are available for review by teachers and parents/guardians.

Students will automatically have access to the Tutor.com tutoring service unless a parent/guardian submits an opt-out request. Watch for an email soon that will include the online tutoring services notice and opt-out information. Additionally, a hard copy form will be sent home with every student.

For additional information, watch this video or visit our online tutoring services website. As always, please contact us if you have any questions.

How to Stay In Touch

Please stay in touch with us throughout the year by:

Attendance Lines

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS:

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS:

Procedures for Picking Up a Student Early

  • Prior to 8:00 a.m., the student must present a note from the parent to their subschool office. Notes must include time of dismissal, reason for leaving, and a contact number. Parents of middle school students must also include the name of the person picking the student up. Please note that this person must be listed as an emergency contact. At the time of early check-out, middle school parents must come in Entrance 1 and meet their student at the security desk. Anyone picking up a middle school student must bring a photo ID with them. High school parents may pick up students outside Entrance 1.
  • Notes are strongly preferred for early check-out, but if a parent is unable to send a note with the student, the parent should call the subschool office as early as possible. All calls will be confirmed by callback to a phone number on the emergency care card. Regrettably, if the parent did not send a note with the student, the parent will be required to park, come into the school to furnish a note, and pick up the student. Without advance notice provided by a note, there may be a wait until our staff is able to locate the student, particularly if the student is at lunch or in a physical education class. We further regret that without advance notice, we are unable to accommodate requests for early dismissal after 2:15 pm.
  • In either case, students must check out at the subschool office when leaving school and check in with the security desk upon return. Students who leave school without checking out properly will be marked unexcused and may face disciplinary action (if returning to school, students are also subject to search). Students must contact all teachers of any class to be missed.

Read our full Attendance procedures at our website.

Late Bus Information

Late bus days are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Buses will pick up students in the front of the building with a departure time of approximately 4:45 pm.  Please check  StudentVue and ParentVue for your student's late bus number and stop. If you have any questions, please contact your student's appropriate subschool.
