We’re so excited the book fair is returning to Parklawn Elementary! The book fair will be held March 14-18 in the library, with set-up taking place Friday, March 11. Each class will visit the book fair twice throughout the week. Once on Monday or Tuesday to preview the selection and a second time Wednesday through Friday to purchase items. See below for the hours each day:

The book fair will accept cash, check, credit cards and eWallet and no tax is charged on items. eWallet is a cashless payment option where money can be added to a virtual account for students to use. The book is always in need of volunteers. There are a variety of positions available, included set up and clean up. Sign up for a slot at https://bit.ly/pesvolunteer. Students in grade 5 or older are welcome during set up and clean up slots for assisting. Mrs. Zamudio can sign off on community service forms for middle schoolers as needed. Our Family Engagement Survey is coming to your email the afternoon of Sunday, March 13. Please participate—your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve FCPS’ practices to best support our students.
Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and your school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, and better social skills and behavior.

Is your child turning 5 on or before September 30th? If so, we are excited to welcome your child to Kindergarten for the 2022-2023 school year! Registration is already open, and you are welcome to contact Parklawn to begin the registration process. This is an important year for you and your child, and we are excited to support you in this process. Also, Save the date! We invite you to attend Parklawn’s Kindergarten Orientation on Thursday, March 31 from 2:30 – 4:00 IN PERSON!! You will have the opportunity to meet our Parklawn team, see “A Day in the Life of Kindergarten”, tour the school, and participate in a Q & A to learn more about our Parklawn Family! For those who would prefer a virtual option, we will hold a virtual Kindergarten Orientation on April 1st from 10-11 am. This will be through zoom and more information will be coming in the future!

As a reminder, FCPS is engaging with parents and caregivers of students currently attending Glasgow, Holmes, and Poe Middle Schools, and elementary students who feed into those middle schools, to determine their stance on the middle schools’ grade level arrangement.
Glasgow, Holmes, and Poe currently house sixth grade students, which is a different set-up from other middle schools across all other neighboring school districts. In February 2021, the Fairfax County School Board approved two follow-on motions to evaluate the grade level arrangement of middle schools in the Mason District--Glasgow, Holmes, and Poe. Your voice is an important part of this evaluation! Please consider attending one of the following meetings which will be hosted on the Zoom platform:
* Language interpretation will be available in Spanish, Arabic, Amharic, and Korean, pending availability.
Parents and caregivers will also have an opportunity to take a survey about the middle school grade level arrangement later this month. Please visit the FCPS website for more information.
In accordance with the Code of Virginia 22.1-274.2 each school in FCPS will have stock albuterol inhalers and valved holding chambers available to be administered to K-12 students with no known history of asthma who are believed to be having a respiratory emergency.
Stock albuterol inhalers are not to be administered to the following:
- Students below the age of four
- Staff
- Visitors
The stock albuterol inhalers will be administered by school board employees (to include local health department employees assigned to public schools) who have received training in the administration of albuterol inhalers.
The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has been working closely with the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to implement a Test to Stay strategy in our local school divisions. Test to Stay is an extra layer of prevention combined with our current layered prevention strategies. Test to Stay (TTS) is a practice that allows unvaccinated or not yet fully vaccinated students identified as close contacts in a confirmed COVID-19 outbreak (by the Fairfax County Health Department), to remain in school. Test to Stay (TTS) requires the following”
- Students take a rapid home COVID-19 test every morning for 5 days after the exposure. If the test is negative, students are allowed to stay in school.
- Students must wear a mask for 10 days after the exposure Students must remain without symptoms for 10 days after the exposure.
Should an outbreak occur at Parklawn, we will reach out to families with the information to voluntarily enroll their child should they choose to do so.
This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Love of Learning. Love of learning means you master new topics on your own or in school.
Those with a love of learning are intrinsically motivated and engaged in a topic regardless of achieving an external standard. They enjoy learning simply for the sake of learning. They don’t need a prize of a high grade as a reward. Their reward is the process of doing the work and improving.
Developing a love of learning is highly beneficial for an individual. It means that they are intrinsically motivated to deepen their existing skills and abilities, or learn something completely new. Since intrinsically motivated action is correlated with positive emotions, those who act on their love of learning may also have enhanced mental and physical health. Additionally, individuals who love learning have the desire and ability to overcome challenges, due to a sense of autonomy and control over their environment.
To practice and encourage the character strength of love of learning with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

The book fair is this week and in need of volunteers! The book fair will run from March 14-18 at the Parklawn Library. Volunteers will assist as students preview and shop for books. Shifts are only 1 hour during the school day. We are also looking for volunteers to help during the Tuesday and Thursday after-school hours, and on Friday afternoon from 1:00 - 5:00 to help with clean-up.
