Franklin MS Weekly Update - March 18

Franklin Families and Students,

It was a great week at Franklin Middle School and I continue to be incredibly proud of our students and staff. There are several exciting events coming in the next few weeks I wanted to highlight some of them for all of you:

  • High School Musical, Jr. on March 25 and 26 - Please consider joining us for High School Musical Jr., presented by the Franklin MS Drama Department. Performances will be on March 25 and 26. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults, and are available for purchase online or at the door. Please click here for more information. Thank you for supporting our students!
  • Culinary Competition Success! - On March 5 at Hayfield High School, 7th graders Anvita G., Hannah L., Janya P., and Ellie W. impressed 10 judges at the Real Food For Kids Culinary Lunch Competition. They proudly represented Franklin MS and took home 2nd Place and the Community Choice Award. The team provided 200 tastings to the public that came to learn about their dish. Please congratulate our students on a very successful weekend!
  • PTA Dining For Dollars Fundraiser on March 24 - Mark your calendars! FMS is partnering with Panda Express and Sweet Frog on Thursday, March 24 for our latest Dining for Dollars. Put away those dishes and swing by for dinner, dessert, or both. Please mention the fundraiser for Franklin Middle School at the register before you pay in order for our PTA to receive a donation. Thank you for your support of our PTA!

Best wishes for a relaxing and enjoyable weekend. We are grateful for all that you do to support our students.

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

SY22-23 Academic Advising Updates

All our students have had a chance to meet with their school counselor individually to select courses for next year. Students and parents can view their course selections in their SIS account under the Course Request.

Please note the following important items and feel free to contact your child's School Counselor with any questions.

  • This list is NOT a schedule, but a confirmation of the courses entered into the Student Information System.
  • Music Courses - Students who have signed up for the music courses (Band, Orchestra and Chorus) will initially be placed in the beginner level until auditions and placements have been completed. Please know that music directors will work with counselors to make the appropriate updates.

Spring SOL Testing Calendar

The spring SOL testing calendar can be found below. Details about testing days and possible changes to the bell schedule will be communicated regularly to students ahead of the testing window. It is important that students are in school on-time on these testing days. Please avoid scheduling appointments during this time.

SOL schedule

A few items to note related to testing:

  • If a student is absent on their testing day, makeup tests can occur throughout the testing window.
  • Once all tests are complete, there is a retake window for any student whose first attempt score is in the 375-399 range. Parents must provide permission for the student to retake the test.
  • Local alternative assessments have been approved by the state of Virginia in Grade 7 History, Grade 8 Writing and Grade 8 Civics and Economics. Teachers will be using an alternative assessment in those classes in lieu of an SOL test. Those assessments occur within the classroom setting throughout the second semester.

If you have any questions regarding testing, please contact Franklin’s school test coordinator, Brandon Clarke
