Hello KJMS Families,

Spring is in the air! Or at least it was earlier this week… It is great to see many unique styles and creative outfits in the clothes students wear to school. With warmer weather we encourage kids to think about what outfits are best for school, and what outfits are more suited to the beach, sports practices, or naptime. Katherine Johnson Middle School recognizes that at this age, students are beginning to express themselves with what they wear, so we want to make sure parents are informed about the FCPS Dress Code policy. You can find more information in the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook on page 15. For a great overview of the dress code which includes not wearing hats or hoods in school, please take a few minutes to watch our featured “Back to Basics” video entitled KJMS Dress Code Video. We share these resources so that we can better partner with you in helping all of our students make good choices.

Schools across FCPS are seeing more activity on social media this year. We, along with other schools, take immediate action when we see accounts or posts that harass or bully members of our community, and we work with Safety and Security and private platforms to remove harmful content.  We count on you as a partner to monitor your student’s phone and account(s) and bring issues to our attention. What starts online can impact the learning environment and takes a lot of time and resources to investigate. If you are curious about your student’s daily habits, consider keeping his/her phone at home for a day and count the alerts as they stream in.

At KJMS we have found our “Away for the Day” policy reduces disruptions to the learning environment. We want to remind you that students are not allowed to use phones and airpods in class or during the school day. Please see our video regarding our “Away for the Day” policy: Away for the Day video.  If your child texts, please remind them of the ATD rule and encourage them to ask teacher permission to be in touch with you.  This includes if your child is not feeling well. They should ask to go to the clinic and call or text you once they arrive at the clinic or main office.

I also wanted to take a moment to remind families that students cannot have food delivered to the school via a delivery company (ie.Uber eats, GrubHub) as this presents safety issues especially when the student places an order and tries to meet the delivery person at one of our school doors. If there is a special occasion or a time when you need to drop off lunch from a restaurant for your student, you must come to the main office, and then your child will be given a space to eat in the front office during their lunch period.

We are curious to see what next week holds as we thaw from the Winter snapback, and yawn for the weekend time change.

Your partners,

The KJMS Admin Team

This Sunday, March 13, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour! As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark.

Help your child stay safe by having him or her wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run or dart into the street or cross between parked cars.

Family Engagement Survey

Our Family Engagement Survey is coming to your email the afternoon of Sunday, March 13. Please participate—your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve FCPS’ practices to best support our students.

Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and your school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, and better social skills and behavior.

FCPS is partnering with independent firm K12 Insight to administer the survey, and it will be available in eight languages. For more information, please watch this short video from Superintendent Brabrand and visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage. Your voice matters!

Lightspeed Parent Report on Child’s Device Activity

FCPS has new tools to help parents and guardians know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided by Lightspeed, our internet content filtering service, at no cost to families. You may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites your child visited. If you want more detailed information, sign up for the Internet Use Parent portal and log-in anytime to see more detail about your child’s browsing and “pause” access to the internet during non-school hours. Find out more and sign up for these services on our website.

Please note:  Gaming, use of Google hangouts, chatting apps, creating additional profiles, and installing add ons to your laptops is a violation of the FCPS Acceptable Use Policy and can result in the loss of your laptop. The use of these items can also result in your laptop not performing when needed for things like Horizon/eCart and Schoology. Please make sure you are using your FCPS device for school activities only. Please contact our Tech Office if you  need assistance.
