Kindergarten

Kindergarten Orientation

Here at Forestville, we will be hosting a Kindergarten Orientation for our Forestville families. The orientation is for children who will be 5 years old by September 30, 2022. The orientation will give you the opportunity to meet our K team and other Forestville staff members, learn about our K program, see what a day in the life of a kindergartener looks like and provide you with a Q&A session to answer any questions you may have.

This year, we will have an in-person Kinder Orientation, with a virtual online streaming component for those families who would prefer that option. Please use this form to register for the orientation.

Here are the details for the orientation:

What: Kindergarten Orientation

Where: In-person at Forestville Elementary (cafeteria) or virtually via Zoom (a link will be emailed to you; if you filled out the form above)

When: Thursday, March 31st from 3:00-4:00pm

Important Note: For those families attending the orientation in-person, please bring your rising Kindergarten child with you to the orientation. During the orientation session for parents, your children will be split between the three kindergarten classrooms where they will participate in some enjoyable activities. Forestville Elementary staff members will be in the classrooms supervising them, while parents are in the cafeteria going through the orientation with our Kindergarten teachers. We ask that you please try and limit the number of family participants to the Orientation to the best of your ability; to include parents/guardians and your rising kindergartener.

Please use this link to register for the orientation.

Learn more about the registration process HERE. Please use the following link to access the registration forms bundle.

Please email our school registrar, Ms. Huong Tran at httran2@fcps.edu. Ms. Tran will collect the required forms and she will schedule a registration appointment after review.

Please help us spread the word to neighbors and friends who have preschool children and live within the Forestville Elementary School boundaries.

SOL Testing Schedule

Students in grades 3-6 in our school will be taking the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) this Spring.

Federal law requires schools to give tests in reading, mathematics, and science. SOL tests measure the extent to which students have learned the content and skills detailed in state standards. These tests provide information about student achievement to the parent, school, division, and state. Scores will be available to families prior to next school year. Forestville Elementary School will be administering the required SOL tests on the following dates:

April 26th – 6th Grade Reading

April 27th – 4th Grade Reading

April 29th – 5th Grade Reading

May 3rd – 3rd Grade Reading

May 4th – 5th  Grade Science

May 9th – 6th Grade Math and 6th Graders taking the Math 7 SOL

May 10th – 5th Grade Math and 5th Graders taking the Math 6 SOL

May 11th – 4th Grade Math

May 13th – 3rd Grade Math

Please contact your child's teacher or school test coordinator, Afton Carlson (arcarlson@fcps.edu), with any questions or concerns.

NNAT TESTING

(First Grade)

All first grade students will take the online version of the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test Third Edition (NNAT3) on Tuesday, March 22, 2022. The NNAT3 is a nonverbal measure of general intellectual ability. The test evaluates a student’s reasoning and problem-solving skills through the identification of patterns involving geometric shapes and pictorial designs. The test is designed to assess ability without requiring the student to read, write, or speak. Students are not expected to know the answers to all questions and will be given opportunities to practice sample items before taking the test. The NNAT3 is an abilities test, so children are not expected to study or prepare for the test the way they would for an achievement test.

SEL Screener (K-6 students)

The spring SEL screener testing window will open on April 12th and run through May 6th. If you prefer your child not participate in the SEL screener, please fill out the opt-out form located here (https://www.fcps.edu/node/43941). Parents that already submitted an opt-out form do not need to submit a new opt-out form.

Teachers set the specific dates for testing in their classes. If you do not want your student to take part in the SEL screener, please return the opt-out form to your child’s teacher.

More information, including a short video about the SEL screener in FCPS and the screener questions, can be found on the SEL Screener webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/node/43892). Please contact Afton Carlson (arcarlson@fcps.edu), assistant principal, with any questions or concerns.
