Message from Dr. Smith

Hello Bruin Families,

Our school is committed to providing a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for each of our Bruins. This core value was challenged this week, and I appreciate how our students, staff and community displayed their solidarity and support to ensure that each student is valued, seen and supported in a positive manner.

This week, Mrs. Kearns and I had a chance to speak with students concerned with how our LBGTQIA+ students are treated.  This conversation was helpful to further understand the student experience and improve areas of concern. Instances of discrimination or harassment will not be tolerated and should be reported to an administrator to fully investigate.

Our school staff is here to listen and to do our part to ensure students feel welcome and safe. If there are any questions or concerns you have, please reach out to myself, your child's Subschool Principal or counselor regarding any concerns.

United as Bruins,

Daniel W. Smith, Ed.D.

The Lake Braddock staff was able to enjoy being together in our in-person gathering for the Staff Development Day.  We enjoyed breakfast provided by the FCPS Davis Center, which is a program designed to serve students with disabilities aged 18-22 years who require instruction through a modified curriculum focused on life and career skills. The Career Centers strive to meet the independent living and career educational needs of all students regardless of their personal challenges.

Don't Forget to Spring Forward

This Sunday, March 13, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour! As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark.

Help your child stay safe by having him or her wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run or dart into the street or cross between parked cars.

Family Engagement Survey

Our Family Engagement Survey is coming to your email the afternoon of Sunday, March 13. Please participate—your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve FCPS’ practices to best support our students.

Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and your school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, and better social skills and behavior.

FCPS is partnering with independent firm K12 Insight to administer the survey, and it will be available in eight languages. For more information, please watch this short video from Superintendent Brabrand and visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage. Your voice matters!

fanquest

Lake Braddock Fanquest March 18

FanQuest started at Lake Braddock in 2018. FanQuest is an event with Special Olympics which focuses on bringing the community together and highlighting the athletes who play throughout the area. Each year, schools throughout the county have been hosting FanQuest, inviting various schools or teams within the area. The goal of this event is to fill the stands with as many fans and make this event a unique experience for all participating athletes.

This year's FanQuest is on Friday, March 18 and starts at 5:00 pm with a tailgate spotlighting school clubs and organizations and creating a welcoming experience for everyone before the game. At 6:00 pm, athletes, coaches, and spectators come in for the opening ceremony and introduction of teams. At 6:30 pm, tipoff will take place.

This year will be one game which will be unique spotlighting not only the skills of the traditional team (solely Special Olympics athletes) and players who have played on our unified team (Special Olympics athletes and partners).

The week leading up to FanQuest, Peer Helping has created a Spirit Week consisting of the following themes:

ehallpass

Virtual Townhall March 30 for e-Hallpass Implementation at Lake Braddock

Lake Braddock Secondary School is committed to providing our students with a safe and secure learning environment. This school year has presented us with new challenges and we have seen a need to reexamine some of our practices. Lake Braddock will be piloting e-Hallpass in the spring of 2022 with a group of our students and teachers with a plan to consider it for implementation school-wide in 2022-2023.

In an effort to answer parents' questions we will be providing a virtual town hall on Wednesday March 30th at 7:00 pm for parents to hear more about e-Hallpass and how we will be implementing it at Lake Braddock. Parents can access the zoom link for the town hall through the parent course on Schoology and can submit questions prior to the townhall using our eHallPass Padlet.

For more information on e-Hallpass, please check out our website or review the following resources:

calendar

Eid al Fitr Shifts to May 2 in Accordance with Lunar Calendar, AP Exam Schedule Remains Unchanged

The dates of some religious and cultural observances are determined by the lunar calendar, which shifts the dates following lunar cycles. Eid al Fitr, the holiest day of the Islamic year, based on the lunar calendar, is one of those observances. This year, Eid al Fitr has shifted from Tuesday, May 3 to Monday, May 2. This means that the approved holiday date on our School Year calendar will also now be Monday, May 2.

Now that the FCPS calendar includes days and observances that shift with the lunar calendar, there may be adjustments going forward. We will make updates and communicate any changes as quickly as possible. Learn more about FCPS’ religious and cultural observance days on our website.

The current Advanced Placement (AP) exams - Chemistry, Spanish Literature, Japanese Language, and U.S. Government - set for May 2 will continue as scheduled as these dates are set by the College Board. If any student has any concern about this exam schedule due to the change in the observance of Eid al Fitr please encourage them to speak with their principal about their options.

How to Stay In Touch

Please stay in touch with us throughout the year by:

Attendance Lines

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS:

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS:

Procedures for Picking Up a Student Early

  • Prior to 8:00 a.m., the student must present a note from the parent to their subschool office. Notes must include time of dismissal, reason for leaving, and a contact number. Parents of middle school students must also include the name of the person picking the student up. Please note that this person must be listed as an emergency contact. At the time of early check-out, middle school parents must come in Entrance 1 and meet their student at the security desk. Anyone picking up a middle school student must bring a photo ID with them. High school parents may pick up students outside Entrance 1.
  • Notes are strongly preferred for early check-out, but if a parent is unable to send a note with the student, the parent should call the subschool office as early as possible. All calls will be confirmed by callback to a phone number on the emergency care card. Regrettably, if the parent did not send a note with the student, the parent will be required to park, come into the school to furnish a note, and pick up the student. Without advance notice provided by a note, there may be a wait until our staff is able to locate the student, particularly if the student is at lunch or in a physical education class. We further regret that without advance notice, we are unable to accommodate requests for early dismissal after 2:15 pm.
  • In either case, students must check out at the subschool office when leaving school and check in with the security desk upon return. Students who leave school without checking out properly will be marked unexcused and may face disciplinary action (if returning to school, students are also subject to search). Students must contact all teachers of any class to be missed.

Read our full Attendance procedures at our website.

Late Bus Information

Late bus days are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Buses will pick up students in the front of the building with a departure time of approximately 4:45 pm.  Please check  StudentVue and ParentVue for your student's late bus number and stop. If you have any questions, please contact your student's appropriate subschool.
