Principal's Message

My Dearest Sleepy Hollow Family,

We hope this letter finds you in the best of health and in great spirits. We are excited to welcome our new school partner, B-Thrifty. Thank you B-Thrifty for sponsoring that delicious breakfast for our staff professional development last Friday. Thank you for your generosity! B-Thrifty is a very unique and different Thrift Store where you can find a lot of treasures, great quality on men, women and kids clothing, shoes, jewelry, furniture, and much more. B-Thrifty also creates jobs. They help the environment by giving a second chance to those donated items--Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Have you checked out our new donation bins located on campus near the bus parking? It’s spring, and you know what time it is . .  . Spring Cleaning Time! We invite you to clean out those gently used clothing, shoes, and small household items. Your donations equate to monies donated back to Sleepy Hollow for school use. Thank you in advance for your support!

Wishing you an amazing week filled with love and JOY!

All the best,
Mattie Fallen, Principal

Have you heard of the Battle of the Books?  This fun quiz/trivia competition based on 8 chapter books is offered to our 4th and 5th grade students in the fall as the year’s Virginia Readers’ Choice and VA Reads titles are introduced.  Teams have been meeting now for several months to practice working together on the type of puzzles they’ll face in the event, as well as tracking which books have been read by members of their team.  HUGE THANKS to our PTA for support of team t-shirts plus food for the event – the students are so excited for the big day in April!  Plus they have enjoyed some great books – happy reading!

FCPS Mask Update

Dear FCPS Community and Staff,

Late Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released updated health guidance that included new metrics for determining COVID-19 community levels. Based on this new guidance, Fairfax County’s current COVID-19 community level is low.

Based on these new metrics and CDC guidance, FCPS will now adjust our roll back plan and allow everyone - staff and parents/guardians of FCPS students - to make a choice whether or not they will wear a mask starting Tuesday, March 1.

Monday will be a day to prepare for this transition. Students and staff will have the day to get answers to questions and prepare for the change. We will share additional information tomorrow that will help us all prepare.

The decision to wear a mask or not is a personal one for our staff and families, based on many factors. The FCPS community values our Caring Culture, and we will see that value in action as we treat each other with respect and understanding during this transition.

Families, please talk with your children about these upcoming changes so they are prepared for this transition and understand your expectations for them at school.

We are encouraged by the continued decline in COVID-19 cases in our community. However, we are also committed to keeping our schools safe for all to learn and work in person. Please continue to do your part to maintain a healthy environment by monitoring for illness and staying home when sick.

Masking requirements will remain in place after March 1 for Fort Belvoir Elementary School, due to its location on a military base, and Head Start and Early Head Start, due to federal requirements.

Elementary magnet school program applications will be accepted beginning Tuesday, March 1. Selection for available magnet school spaces is based on a lottery. Registration for the elementary magnet school lottery closes on Tuesday, April 12, at 4 p.m.

  • Bailey’s Primary School for the Arts and Sciences will accept lottery applications for students who will be in grades K-2 during the 2022-23 school year;
  • Bailey’s Upper School for the Arts and Sciences will accept applications for students in grades 3 and 4.
  • Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences will accept lottery applications for students who will enter grades K-5 during the 2022-23 school year.

Parents are strongly encouraged to attend school-based information nights to learn about individual school programs, student eligibility, the lottery process, and available transportation. Sessions will be held virtually and parents will need to register in advance using the links found on the magnet lottery webpage

Help Keep Kiss and Ride Lines Moving

This year, schools across FCPS have experienced a significant increase in Kiss and Ride. You can do your part to help make the Kiss and Ride line go as quickly and safely as possible by making sure that your student is ready to exit your vehicle when you enter the drop off zone. Have them gather everything they will be taking with them to school ahead of time so they are ready to go when it is your turn. Some schools have several hundred cars per day; even saving 10-20 seconds per car can make a big difference.

Also, please consider parking away from the school and walking with your student the rest of the way. This way you and your student get in a little exercise. If there is a public parking lot nearby, think about working with your neighbors and walking together from a remote location.

Performance-Based Assessments Allow Students to Show What They Know

assessment

FCPS students in grades 3-8 will participate in performance-based assessments (PBAs) again this year in place of Standards of Learning (SOL) tests to show what they know about their elementary and middle school course standards. PBAs are an innovative assessment practice tied to students’ development of Portrait of a Graduate skills

PBAs require students to perform a task that teachers score using a descriptive rubric. Examples include participating in a debate, creating a persuasive piece of media, or writing an essay. The following courses use at least one PBA each year as part of state expectations: grade 3 science, grades 3-8 social studies, grade 5 writing, and grade 8 writing.

To learn more about PBAs in grades 3-8 and how you can support your student, visit the Local Alternative Assessment and PBA public webpage.
