1.Welcome, Ms. Corrigan!
We are very happy to announce a new part-time ESOL teacher who will be working with our current ESOL team, Ms. Atkinson and Ms. Quinn. This week, Ms. Jingwen Corrigan started at Fairfax Villa for 2.5 days a week. She also works at Silverbrook Elementary 2.5 days a week.
Ms. Corrigan was born and raised in China and speaks English, Mandarin Chinese, and some Shanghainese. She received her master’s degree in education from George Mason University and has been teaching in FCPS since 2010. Ms. Corrigan taught Chinese at the middle and high school levels before she decided to make the change to elementary ESOL. We are glad she did!
Welcome to Fairfax Villa, Ms. Corrigan!
2.Family Engagement Survey
On Sunday, March 13, in the afternoon, you will receive an email from Fairfax County Public Schools via K12 Insight regarding FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey. Your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve our practices to best support our students.
Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and your school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, and better social skills and behavior.
FCPS is partnering with independent firm K12 Insight to administer the survey. It will be available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, Arabic, Chinese, Urdu, Farsi, and Amharic. Please visit our Family Engagement Survey webpage for more information and look for the survey in your inbox on March 13. Your voice matters!
3.Read Across America
March 2nd was Read Across America Day. The NEA, which sponsors the celebration of reading nationwide, is proud to encourage readers to celebrate diversity in books. It’s time to “try a new hat” by celebrating diverse authors from various backgrounds and books that provide mirrors for readers to see themselves and windows into other cultures and experiences.
We will celebrate February 28th – April 11th.
Been Booked! – Each grade level received a bag of read aloud books that will travel among the classrooms. As classes enjoy the books, the teacher will display the “been booked!” sign outside of their room. Classes will then rank their favorite read alouds from the bag and the winners will be announced on our Morning News Show.
Read Across America MyOn.com Reading Challenge: Beginning Feb. 28th and ending April 11th the class in Kindergarten-2nd and the class in 3rd-6th who read the most in MyOn.com will receive the books from the Been Booked! event. Students can use MyOn at home too!
Reading Bingo Fun: The Bingo Board was sent home in the March 1st Tuesday Folder. Students who complete the Bingo Board and turn it in to Mrs. Case by March 31st will receive a fun bookmark

The 6th grade team and students dressed for Decades Day!
5.Kindergarten Orientation
This year’s kindergarten orientation will be held at Fairfax Villa in the afternoon of May 19th from 4:45 - 5:30. Parents and new kindergartners will have the opportunity to meet the 2022-2023 kindergarten team and learn more about our school and what to expect for your child’s important year in kindergarten.
We look forward to meeting our new kindergarten families!
6.Parent Input Form for 2022-23 Class Placement
With the end of the year quickly approaching, we are already looking ahead to next year. While we look at class placements for the coming year, we want you to be aware of the process. We place students in classrooms based on numerous criteria. Students are grouped so that classrooms are heterogeneous, having a balance of boys and girls, a balance of academic performance and ability, and groups that will allow for the greatest support from our resource teachers.
Classroom teachers will have input into the recommendations for next year, as will our counselors and specialists. Our staff has been told that we will not take requests for particular teachers because we base our placement on instructional criteria and individual student strengths and needs. It is unfair to give special consideration to some parents when it would be impossible to grant requests from all parents. Please be aware also that grade level assignments for staff sometimes change, due to late enrollments or other changes. Staff assignments are determined at the end of the summer. Our staff has been directed not to give out information about placement prior to that time. Children and parents are disappointed when changes must be made due to staffing issues.
In addition, we also value parent input. If you feel there is pertinent information to support your child’s success for the upcoming school year, you may submit your input by clicking on this Google Form link:https://forms.gle/JxkCXDfW1PStFg356. The parent input forms are due by May 13, 2022. We value and consider your insight into your child’s learning needs. Taken together with teacher input, your feedback informs class placements.
7.Water Bottles for Students
We are again in need of donations for water bottles for students. If you would like to donate some to our students, please bring them to the school office. We appreciate any donations you can provide.
Please make sure that your student has a refillable water bottle with them each day. This will help us in making sure that all students have water during the day and will also help us to be more environmentally friendly.
8.Academic Testing Results Information
Here is the FCPS schedule for the parent reports of the testing that students have had this fall.
