1.Read Across America

March 2nd was Read Across America Day.   The NEA, which sponsors the celebration of reading nationwide, is proud to encourage readers to celebrate diversity in books.  It’s time to “try a new hat” by celebrating diverse authors from various backgrounds and books that provide mirrors for readers to see themselves and windows into other cultures and experiences.

We will celebrate February 28th – April 11th.

Been Booked! – Each grade level will receive a bag of read alouds that will travel among the classrooms.  As classes enjoy the books, the teacher will display the “been booked!” sign outside of their room.   Classes will then rank their favorite read alouds from the bag and the winners will be announced on our Morning News Show.

Read Across America MyOn.com Reading Challenge:   Beginning Feb. 28th and ending April 11th the class in Kindergarten-2nd  and the class in  3rd-6th who read the most in MyOn.com will receive the books from the Been Booked! event. Students can use MyOn at home too!

Reading Bingo Fun:   Look for the Bingo Board in the March 1st Tuesday Folder.   Students who complete the Bingo Board and turn it in to Mrs. Case by March 31st  will receive a fun bookmark.

2.Parent Notification of NNAT3 Testing for First Graders

In an effort to obtain additional information about your child, the online version of the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test Third Edition (NNAT3) will be administered to your first grade child on Tuesday, March 22. It is important that your child attend school on this day. If possible, please avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would take your child out of school during this time period. It is also important that your child has had a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast before testing.

The NNAT3 is a nonverbal measure of general intellectual ability. The test evaluates a student’s reasoning and problem-solving skills through the identification of patterns involving geometric shapes and pictorial designs. The test is designed to assess ability without requiring the student to read, write, or speak. Students are not expected to know the answers to all questions and will be given opportunities to practice sample items before taking the test. The NNAT3 is an abilities test, so children are not expected to study or prepare for the test the way they would for an achievement test.

Score reports will be provided to parents once scores become available. Typically, these reports are available several months after the test is taken. If you have any questions about this test, please contact the Advanced Academics Resource Teacher (AART), Ms. Cat Wilkins, or one of the School Test Coordinators, Ms. Schmidt or Ms. Sobeski.

There are a few students in grades 2-6 who will also receive this assessment. The parents of those students have  received a separate notification letter.

3.PLEASE Enroll Now! We need new students to enroll NOW for the 2022-2023 school year!

Our current student enrollment is lower than anticipated. Therefore, to ensure we continue to be fully staffed with highly qualified teachers, please reach out this week to your neighbors who may still need to register future students with the following message.

  • Is your child turning 5 years old by September 30, 2022?
  • Is your child a 1st-6th grader who is new to Fairfax Villa?

First, see if your student falls in the Fairfax Villa ES boundary by viewing the FCPS boundary locator.

Then, if your student does fall in the Fairfax Villa ES boundary, please call Silvia Dossmann, our school registrar, this week so that she can assist you with the registration process. Her phone number is 703-267-2801.

Please email any questions to Silvia Dossmann,  Fairfax Villa Student Information Assistant, at smdossmann@fcps.edu.

Calling All New Kindergarten Dragons!

Do you have a child at home who will be five by September 30th? Please start your registration now. If you have any neighbors with little ones, please send this information to them as well.

We encourage you to register for our Kindergarten/New Student intake form on our website ASAP so we have accurate numbers for staffing our classes for next year!

If you have questions regarding kindergarten registration, please reach out to Ms. Dossmann at smdossmann@fcps.edu or 703-267-2801.

5.Parent Internet Activity Reports

Parents who are interested in knowing more about their child’s Internet browsing activity on an FCPS device can sign up to receive a weekly Parent Report from Lightspeed, our internet content filtering service. The report provides a list of the top sites the child visited that week.

Additionally, if you wish to get more detailed information, the weekly Parent Report offers parents the ability to self-sign-up to the free Internet Use Parent Portal. Parents who sign up for the Internet Use Parent Portal can log-in any time to see a little more detail about their child’s internet browsing. The portal also offers you the added ability to “pause” access to the internet during non-school hours on the FCPS device.

Interested parents can submit a request directly from the Technology Support for Families page for weekly Parent Reports. FCPS will validate the enrolling parent’s email in SIS, and once processed, the parent will receive a weekly report over each weekend from our internet content filtering service, Lightspeed.

6.Water Bottles for Students

We are again in need of donations for water bottles for students. If you would like to donate some to our students, please bring them to the school office. We appreciate any donations you can provide.

Please make sure that your student has a refillable water bottle with them each day. This will help us in making sure that all students have water during the day and will also help us to be more environmentally friendly.

To celebrate being back in person, students and staff will be wearing the same clothing to kickoff and end each week during the 2021-22 school year!

  • On Mondays, we will be wearing our Positivity shirts to highlight our character strengths and virtues that we will be learning throughout the school year.  The Boosterthon team  distributed these green shirts during the fun run. The shirts highlight our Villa  dragon and Positivity logos on the front of the shirts.
  • On Fridays, we will be showing off our favorite Fairfax Villa spirit wear.  If your son or daughter has outgrown their Fairfax Villa spirit wear clothing, our PTA has some new ones.
