Message from the Principal

Dr Grove

February 28th, 2022

Dear Wolftrap Families,

I cannot believe that it is almost March! Is it too soon to think about Spring Break? The flowers around our beautiful campus are getting some ideas, as I see them trying to come through the soil. Wheat’s did a wonderful job of getting us ready for that spring thaw, so my deep thanks to them for that work!

MASKING ON TUESDAY: As you know we are entering a new phase of the pandemic that will bring about changes to our health and safety measures. First of all, know that the health and safety of you and our students is our highest priority.

State law now allows parents/guardians to elect for their children to not wear masks at school starting March 1, regardless of health metrics in our community. We highly recommend students participate in universal masking for the protection of students and staff who have health concerns.

In addition, late Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released updated health guidance that included new metrics for determining COVID-19 community levels. Based on this new guidance, Fairfax County’s current COVID-19 community level is low.

Based on these new metrics and CDC guidance, FCPS will now adjust our roll back plan and allow everyone - staff and parents/guardians of FCPS students - to make a choice whether or not they will wear a mask starting Tuesday, March 1.

Here at Wolftrap, all students will be treated the same regardless of their masking choice. Students will not be asked to separate based on who is wearing a mask or not. Our interactions with all students will be based on care and respect. Remember, our students look to us as examples of how to treat each other and how to work through these situations. Families of special needs children who may need additional consideration for health reasons should work with their IEP or 504 teams.

I assure all students and families that Wolftrap will remain a caring and supportive place to learn. As always, please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.

VIENNA AND EARTH DAY: To celebrate Earth Day, the Town of Vienna Conservation and Sustainability Commission (CSC) is excited to announce the second annual Student Creativity Contest and Town Expo. Guideline, release forms, and other details are available at www.viennava.gov/CSC. Entries are due by 5PM on Sunday, April 1, 2022.

VISION AND MISSION FEEDBACK: As we embark on the important task of crafting an updated mission and vision statement to guide Wolftrap Elementary into the future, we have started talking to students about the kind of school they would like to attend. Community voices will also be an important part of this process. At the March 11th PTA meeting, we will present the work done so far and hear additional feedback from all of you. Please mark your calendars for this wonderful event!

BE ON THE LOOKOUT: PRINCIPAL EVALUATION FEEDBACK FORM: This spring all Wolftrap parents/guardians will be contacted through email with a link to the FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form Online. This questionnaire is part of the Performance Evaluation Program and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include instructional leadership, school climate, human resources management, organizational management, communication and community relations and professionalism. Understanding that this has been another unusual year, the impacts of COVID-19 will be taken into consideration when reviewing the feedback. The questionnaire will be collected online between March 7 and March 18. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. Your opinions matter!

FORMER WOLFTRAP STUDENT REQUEST: Please see a message from a former Wolftrapper and former 4th grade student of mine! Hi! My name is Kaia Griggs, and I’m a first-year undergraduate student at the University of Chicago. As a little elementary schooler, I attended Wolftrap, and I’m so happy to reconnect with the school that I loved so much. I am involved with a consulting group on campus called Eckhart Consulting; right now, I am working on a project with the Boston Children’s Museum to help them develop and monetize digital content. My team is also aiming to understand what parents want from a museum’s digital content, as well as what digital content their child currently consumes. If you could take a few minutes to fill out the survey below, it would be much appreciated!

https://forms.gle/cDtVFTrGRixkazW79 If you have any questions about the survey or would be willing to hop on a call with me to answer a few more in-depth questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to me. My email is kgriggs@uchicago.edu.

ESSER: Last fall, FCPS received $188.8 million in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) funding to help safely reopen and sustain the safe operation of schools and address the impacts of COVID-19 on students. Please provide your thoughts on how FCPS is meeting ESSER III requirements. And, take a look at the impact ESSER III funds are having throughout FCPS.  For more information on the ESSER III grant, please watch this video and visit the FCPS website.  At Wolftrap, we are using funding to support our calming corners in classrooms. We are also going to be bringing therapy dogs to campus in the upcoming weeks. We are excited about this new program! Additionally, we continue to target instruction to student need, using data to inform small group work during and after school.

KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION SAVE THE DATE: NOW IN PERSON! Do you know any new families in your neighborhoods? Do you know anyone with rising Kinder students? We are currently planning this event from 2:00-3:15p on Thursday, March 3rd. Doors will open at 1:45. Please stay tuned for more details, which will be sent out to future Wolftrap families. Ms. Caroline Kamel in our office can also answer questions.

Warmly,

Dr. Maggie Grove
Principal

Wofltrap PTA

Hello Wolftrap community!

Over these last two COVID years, a very dedicated and core group of volunteers has worked behind the scenes to keep our PTA events, programs, and funding going. We are so grateful to these volunteers and appreciate all the hard work they put into our school, students, and staff! Thank you to our amazing volunteers!

We are starting to look ahead to next year, and we have a lot of volunteer openings available to continue our beloved programs at the school. Please email president@wolftrappta.org if you are interested in leading or working on the committee for any of these openings for next year - we welcome all levels of time commitment:

  • Edison Expo
  • Directory
  • After-School Programs
  • Front sign (changing out the letters every few weeks)
  • Welcoming Committee
  • Dining for Dollars

Mark your calendar for March 11 at 8:45am for our next virtual PTA meeting. Not only will we review what our committees are doing, but we will receive an update from Dr. Grove and Tara Hewan (the Equity and Cultural Responsiveness specialist for Region 1) on their work crafting Wolftrap's vision and mission statement for the years ahead. They would love parent and community feedback on their process. See you there!
