  • March 4- Student Holiday, Staff Development Day
  • March 31- 2 Hour Early Release; End of 3rd Quarter

Dear Eagle Families,

Thank you for another great week as we finish up the month of February! We had almost every season this week, so who knows what March will blow in as far as weather goes!

Thank you for your continued support as we navigate ever-changing COVID guidelines. A special thanks to our COVID Case Manager, Jennie Choi. She has done a fabulous job helping us all stay healthy and updated on the latest guidance. As FCPS continues to send out changes to our practices, please call if you have any questions. We also want to ensure all families that FCPS and KJMS remain committed to being an inclusive and safe environment for all students and staff. As such, we will honor all family decisions with their children regarding mask wearing beginning on March 1 with the implementation of the new law. We are stronger together and grow because we are a tapestry of ideas and beliefs.

Enjoy these final weeks of winter. Before we know it, Daylight Savings Time will be here again with longer days and warmer weather. Enjoy your weekend!

Happy Friday,

Tammy Silipigni, Principal

Congratulations to these students as well as the rest of the KJMS Math Club and the KJMS Math Club Coach, Mrs. Wang, for their hard work!

Your Views and Opinions Are Important to Us

This spring, all Katherine Johnson Middle School parents/guardians will be contacted through email with a link to the FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form Online. This questionnaire is part of the Performance Evaluation Program and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include instructional leadership, school climate, human resources management, organizational management, communication and community relations and professionalism. Understanding that this has been another unusual year, the impacts of COVID-19 will be taken into consideration when reviewing the feedback.

The questionnaire will be collected online between March 7 and March 18. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. Your opinions matter!

Thank you.

Virginia Music Educators Association District XI Honors Chorus Festival

pic

On Friday, February 18th and Saturday, February 19th,  selected choral students from KJMS participated in the Virginia Music Educators Association District XI Honors Chorus.  The festival was held at West Springfield High School and featured singers from middle and high schools from across the region.   These students rehearsed all day on both Friday and Saturday to perfect 5 songs with the help of an amazing guest conductor, Mr. Evan Powers.  The weekend culminated with a performance that featured KJMS’s own, Marli Palchik, 8th grade, as a soloist.  All students worked hard, sang beautifully, and represented KJMS with pride!

Is Your Child Missing Something?

Check Out Our Lost and Found

We have accumulated many misplaced items since we returned from winter break. Please encourage your student to check for their lost items in the lost and found area in the cafeteria. Thank you.

Reminder of

After-School Check-In/Out Procedures

All students who stay after-school must report to the cafeteria by 2:25pm.  This includes students staying for academic help, clubs, activities and sports.  While students are in the cafeteria they will sign-in and receive a snack.  Also, any students who are being picked up from after-school will need to be picked up at Door 7, not at Door 1 (main entrance).  The main office is closed at 3pm.

Multilingual Parent Podcasts: Making the Transition to Middle School

En Pocas Palabras graphic

Making the move from elementary school to middle school can be both an exciting and unsettling time for a parent and student. In this week’s podcast, hear ways to ease the transition by:

  • Understanding the developmental changes in your child.
  • Getting to know middle school culture.
  • Encouraging independence, but remaining available.
  • Offering emotional support to your child.
  • Reiterating your family values and expectations.
  • Staying involved in your child’s school.

This podcast’s infomercial is about summer camps. It’s not too early to start thinking about summer fun. The FCPS Tech Adventure Camp and the Career and Technical Education Camp are taking registrations for summer 2022.

Attendance

If a student will be absent or arriving late to school, parents or guardians should always report the details of the absence to the school. Teachers do not have access to mark a student excused for an absence, which is why it is imperative that parents contact the attendance office (instead of, or in addition to, the teacher) when their child is absent so we can mark them correctly.

To report an absence, parents have these options:

  1. Use the link to our online attendance form (preferred method) from the main page of the Katherine Johnson website
  2. Call the attendance line at 703-934-2424 being sure to include the spelling of your student’s last name and reason for the absence.

If your student will be picked up early for an appointment:
Please send them to the front office in the morning with a note stating the time of the dismissal.
Students will be given a pass to leave class and meet parents in the office. Parents should come to entrance #1, to the main office, with a photo ID to pick up their student for early dismissals.

For more information on the attendance policies, please visit the KJMS Attendance page.
