Career Pathways Study
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has partnered with FourPoint Education Partners, a national consultancy based in Maryland, to assess our current pathway elective courses and career pathway programs. Our middle and high school students will be receiving an email inviting them to participate in a brief survey. The email will be sent to their school email address and will be coming from Naviance with a subject titled: Student Survey Pathways Study. Participation in the survey is optional. Students will have the opportunity to complete this survey during Monday and Wednesday next week in Advisory.
In addition, high school parents will have an opportunity to provide feedback. More information will follow soon.

Fairfax County Champions of Character
- The Fairfax County Champions of Character Awards program honors youth, coaches and parents for extraordinary service in pursuing victory with honor on and off the field of competition. Instituted by the Fairfax County Athletic Council, this program aims to support the ennobling tradition of amateur athletics in cultivating teamwork, leadership, good sportsmanship and community service.
- We are proud to share that two Wolverines are receiving Champions of Character Awards!! Congratulations to senior athlete Owen Joachim and Assistant Boys Basketball Coach Dr. David Houston Jr.
- The 2022 Champions of Character Awards Taped Event will be made available on the Champions of Character webpage starting at 4:30pm on Tuesday March 8, 2022 at this link.
Course Selection Update
- School counselors are working hard to follow up with students who missed or were absent during their initial academic advising appointment. If you have not met with your counselor to select classes, please stop by and see your counselor this week.
- All student course selections must be finalized by Friday, March 11.
- If you have emailed your counselor a course change, please be patient with their response as they are working to meet with students and respond to emails as quickly as possible. If you email a class change by March 11, we will make the update.
- A reminder, there are no changes from March 12 – April 15 while WPHS Administration finalizes staffing for 22-23 school year. April 16 – May 13 changes will be accepted on a space available basis. There are no changes after May 13.
Class of 2023 College Planning Night
- On Wednesday, March 9th, Student Services will be hosting a College Planning Night for all Junior students and Families from 6 pm – 8 pm. This will be an in-person event and will be available in both English and Spanish. We are excited to welcome representatives from Longwood, Virginia Tech, University of Mississippi, Radford, and NOVA who will share information on the college search process, application platforms, the college admissions review process, financial aid and scholarships.
West Potomac Band – Indoor Drumline
- Congratulations to our Indoor Drumline for their 1st place finish in their class at the Atlantic Indoor Association’s competition held Feb. 26th at Potomac HS in Dumfries. Kudos to all the Indoor Drumline students for their hard work and to the percussion staff, Joey Fogleson and Marcia McCants. Marcia is a West Po alum and former member of Wolverine Band! Two more competitions are coming up: March 12 - Mt. Vernon HS, Alexandria, VA; March 19 - Powhatan HS, Powhatan, VA
WPHS Dance Team:
- Sign-ups Now Open for Summer Dance Camps!
- The West Potomac Dance Team is offering three weeks of summer dance camp at West Potomac for rising Kindergarten through 8th Grades. Dates are June 20-24, July 11-15, and July 18-22. Check out the this flyer for details!

Senior Convocation - June 2 at 9:00 am
- Convocation is our Senior Honors and Awards ceremony where seniors are recognized for their academic accomplishments and scholarship awards. Honor graduates will also be recognized and receive an “honor medal” to wear on graduation day. An Honor Graduate is a senior who has earned an overall cumulative grade point average of 4.0 and higher over their entire high school career.

- On Monday, March 7th,, a former WPHS Wolverine and current senior at Virginia Tech will visit the Career Center during each lunch period. She is studying in the College of Natural Resources and the Environment majoring in Wildlife Conservation. Students will have the opportunity to hear from a current college student about her experiences at VA Tech, this field of study, and other majors the College of Natural Resources and the Environment has to offer. All students are welcome to attend and pre-registration is not required.

ASVAB Test Registration Open!!!
- Registration is now open for the ASVAB test which will be administered here at West Potomac High School on Tuesday morning, April 12th. This test is open to ALL juniors and seniors. It is another opportunity for students if they missed taking the ASVAB when administered last November or if they need to re-take it for entrance into the military. Students should check their fcpsschools.net email for details, including the registration form. Registration is open until Friday, March 25th at 4:00 pm. See Mrs. Young in the Career Center or email kbyoung1@fcps.edu if you have questions.

FCPS’ Trades for Tomorrow (T4T) courses T4T courses offer current FCPS students opportunities to participate in apprenticeship, trade, and industrial education opportunities. Future development of our T4T program includes defined pathways for students to enter the workforce following successful completion of a course sequence, apprenticeship, and testing.

- We are hosting our Winter Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, March 8th.The Ceremony will begin at 7:00 PM in the Springbank Auditorium. We are excited to celebrate an amazing and successful Winter Season.
OUR MULCH SALE IS BACK!
- The Wolverine Athletic Booster Club (WABC) MULCH SALE is back! Covid cancelled many of our large fundraisers, but the 2022 MULCH SALE is your opportunity to support West Potomac Athletics and spruce up your landscape for spring.
- $6 each for a large bag (3 cubic feet) of brown shredded hardwood mulch - this is a great deal!
- FREE delivery for orders of 25 bags or more.
- Add $25 for delivery for orders under 25.
- Mulch will be delivered and unloaded by West Potomac student athletes on Saturday, March 19.
- For those picking up, bags will be available at Carl Sandburg Middle School between 9am-3pm, on March 19.

Best Volunteer Opportunity EVER! Do you have freshman and/or younger students? Well, SAT/ACT tests are in your future. Be on the cutting edge of changes to the official tests and college admissions by chairing the PTSA’s Test Prep Program! No test prep experience is needed just strong organization and customer service skills. Contact Marilyn Aboff, marilynaboff@yahoo.com, to learn more about managing this rewarding program.

Most students will show a strong preference for either the SAT or ACT format. This preference usually results in students naturally testing the SAT equivalent of 100 points higher on their preferred test. Mock tests are offered on campus to help students determine their preferred format and establish baseline test scores – not to mention the benefits of practice. Sophomores can make their junior year less hectic by determining test preference now! Juniors, get a little extra practice!
- Sophomores, now through May is a great time to take mocks and determine your test preference!
- Juniors, mock tests are perfect for practicing for the real thing!

Teen Job Fairs Help Students Make the Most of Opportunities
- Fairfax County high school students looking for their first part-time job, summer and seasonal job opportunities, or who want more information about potential career pathways, are invited to attend one of two upcoming teen job fairs and resume building workshops. Local businesses and agencies will be on hand to offer a range of opportunities including part-time employment, internships, and volunteer work for prospective students.
- Volunteer opportunities and resume building workshops will also be available for younger students. The job fairs will be held on Saturday, March 12, from 1 to 3 p.m. at West Springfield High School, and Saturday, March 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Chantilly High School.
