Celebrating Black History Month

In February, people all over the United States celebrate Black History Month—because Black history is American history.  Students deserve meaningful, sustained opportunities to learn about the experiences and contributions of Black and African American people year-round, and Black History Month is one opportunity to honor these diverse and important stories. Each week in the McNair Memo in February, we will spotlight some important achievements and contributions of Black Americans.

Spotlight on…Frank Yerby and Clara B. Williams

fy

Frank Yerby was born in Augusta, Georgia, on September 5, 1916.  Mr. Yerby was a popular writer, originally noted for writing romance novels set in the antebellum South.   In 1946, he published "The Foxes of Harrow", a southern historical romance, which became the first novel by an African-American to sell more than a million copies.  That same year, he also became the first African-American to have a book purchased for screen adaptation by a Hollywood studio, when 20th Century Fox optioned Foxes. The book became a 1947 Oscar-nominated film of the same name.  In all, he wrote 33 novels. Even with this success, Mr. Yerby left the United States in 1952, in protest against racial discrimination.

Who was Frank Yerby?

Clara B Williams was born in 1885 and attended New Mexico State University at a time when Black and white students were not allowed to share the same classroom. Since her professors would not allow her inside the classroom, she took notes while standing in the hallways. She completed all of her academic requirements and graduated, but Mrs. Williams was not allowed to walk with her class to accept her diploma. She was the first African-American to graduate from the school.  Mrs. Williams became a great teacher and taught black students during the day and then taught their parents, many former slaves, at night.  Mrs. Williams lived to be 108 years old. After her death, New Mexico State University renamed the English Department after her.

Friendly Reminder: Performance-Based Assessments Allow Students to Show What They Know

FCPS students in grades 3-8 will participate in performance-based assessments (PBAs) again this year in place of Standards of Learning (SOL) tests to show what they know about their elementary and middle school course standards. PBAs are an innovative assessment practice tied to students’ development of Portrait of a Graduate skills

PBAs require students to perform a task that teachers score using a descriptive rubric. Examples include participating in a debate, creating a persuasive piece of media, or writing an essay. The following courses use at least one PBA each year as part of state expectations: grade 3 science, grades 3-8 social studies, grade 5 writing, and grade 8 writing.

To learn more about PBAs in grades 3-8 and how you can support your student, visit the Local Alternative Assessment and PBA public webpage.
