Woodburn News - February 25, 2022

MCCP

We recently partnered with the Medical Care for Children Partnership Foundation (MCCP) to bring a vaccine clinic to our community.

We are grateful for their partnership.

Dear Woodburn Families,

We hope you are well.  This week brought the return of our beloved book fair.  So many students walked away with smiles and an eagerness to begin reading their new books.  We will carry this energy into next week as we prepare for our annual Raise a Reader event.  All students will enjoy a read aloud by a guest reader and receive a new book.  We can't wait!

Thank You from Mrs. Lockwood

Dear Parents and Families,

Thank you so much for making our Book Fair an outstanding success!

Our reward for hosting a Book Fair is watching your kids discover new books. All that joy wouldn’t be possible without the amazing volunteers from our school community – you deserve my special thanks.

If your child missed out on the fair (or already finished every new book), there’s still time to shop! Our Book Fair will continue online through March 4. Your online purchases benefit our school. Click below to shop our fair:

I hope to see you and your child at our next book fair. Until then, happy reading!

Gratefully,

Mary Lockwood, Librarian

Raise a Reader - March 2

We are gearing up for our annual Raise a Reader event. Parents, teachers, and other staff members will lead a read aloud in every classroom. Each student will receive a copy of the book to keep! We are always focused on fostering a love of reading and encouraging our students to share reading at home. Our Woodburn PTA generously sponsors this event every year.

If you would like to volunteer to read a book to a class, please contact Linnea Kessler-Gowell at linneakg@gmail.com. Volunteers should arrive about 10 minutes before the scheduled reading time. The times are as follows:

Read aloud times:

  • Kindergarten 12:30-12:45
  • 1st Grade 9:45-10:00
  • 2nd Grade 1:15-1:30
  • 3rd Grade 10:00-10:15
  • 4th Grade 10:30-10:45
  • 5th Grade 12:45-1:00
  • 6th Grade 11:45-12:00

March 3rd and 4th

Students will be dismissed two hours early on March 3.  Dismissal will begin at 2:05 pm.

Friday, March 4, is a student holiday.  Teachers will participate in professional learning on this day.

Pedestrian Safety Tips

As we prepare for spring, we want to remind families of safety tips students can take when walking to and from school.  Thank you for taking time to review the tips linked below with your child.

Kindergarten Registration

Do you have a child at home who will be five by September 30th? Please start your registration now. If you have any neighbors with little ones, please send this information to them as well. These are the 5 steps you need to take to register your child. If you have questions regarding kindergarten registration, please reach out Ms. Garcia or call our main office at 703-641-8200.

Vaccination Status

You may wish to voluntarily share your child’s COVID-19 vaccination information. However, we do not require your child’s vaccination information and no school employee will ask for your child’s vaccination status.

If you would like to provide us with your child’s vaccination status, please bring your child’s COVID-19 vaccination card or a photocopy of the card to Ms. Garcia, our student registrar in the main office.

Health & Safety Reminders

Monitoring Your Child's Health

Please continue to you use the FCPS health screening questionnaire to monitor your child's health each day.  This will support our efforts to keep all students and staff as safe as possible. If your child has Covid-like symptoms at school, you will be asked to pick them up immediately.

Please use the health screening questionnaire to screen your child for Covid-19 symptoms before sending them to school each day.

COVID-19 Response Flowchart for Families

When a positive COVID-19 case is reported at Woodburn, a collaborative effort to investigate close contacts and determine the appropriate next steps for affected students begins. To help families know what to expect, the process is outlined on the FCPS website.

COVID Case Notification Process

Once a week, either on Friday or the last day of school for the week, school leadership will share an update if there were any COVID-19 positive cases confirmed in the school that week.

Potential close contacts of the positive case that are paused from in-person instruction and activities will continue to receive real time notifications.

The FCPS COVID-19 Health Metrics webpage is updated daily for families who wish to know about cases in real-time.

Where to Find a Pediatric COVID-19 Vaccine

FCPS is encouraging all parents whose children are eligible to get vaccinated. We know that vaccination is the way out of this pandemic, and we are asking you to help us continue to make our schools as safe as they possibly can be.

The Fairfax County Health Department’s webpage has resources for finding and scheduling a vaccine appointment. Up-to-date information about vaccination opportunities is available on the FCPS website.
