Dear Bonnie Brae School Community,
What a fun week it has been, filled with school spirit! We have had so many students and staff joining in on the fun and participating. These spirit days have certainly been a hit, and we would like to thank our SCA for coming up with such great ways to share our Scottie spirit!
Don't forget that next week is a shorter week for students, as we have a two-hour early closing on Thursday, March 3, and there is no school on March 4 due to the FCPS Staff Development Day.
We hope you all have an awesome weekend!

Kindergarten Registration for 2022-2023
It is once again that time of year when we need to make Kindergarten enrollment projections for the 2022-2023 school year.
Our Kindergarten Orientation will be held on March 30th (AM) and 31st (PM). Details are in the works and more info to come. Please save the date and mark your calendars. Virtual and in person opportunities will be available for our rising kindergarten families.
If you have a child who will be age 5 on or before September 30, 2022, then it is time to register your child for the 2022-2023 school year. Children born after September 30, 2017 are ineligible to attend kindergarten. The Code of Virginia does not allow exceptions for children born after this date.
We request that you begin the registration process as soon as possible. Registration information and forms are available online at: https://bonniebraees.fcps.edu/student-services/student-registration
If this does not apply to you, please share this information with a neighbor whose child may be entering kindergarten. Thank you. We look forward to welcoming our new kindergartners and their families!

COVID Weekly Update
Every week, we will provide an update on our COVID-19 status to keep you informed. In cooperation with the Fairfax County Health Department we have identified more than one student at Bonnie Brae who has reported testing positive for COVID-19 during the week of February 22 - February 25.
FCPS also maintains a Covid-19 dashboard that is updated daily with cases from the school and division level. Parents interested in following specific numbers at Bonnie Brae can refer to the COVID-19 Dashboard on the FCPS website to keep you informed and aware throughout the week. If you have any questions about how we are staying safe so we can keep learning in person, please contact the BBES office at 703-321-3900.
We all play a part in stopping the spread of COVID-19.
For more information on COVID-19 Supports and Resources, please visit the Virginia Department of Health website.

Changes to Universal Masking
Beginning March 1
This Tuesday, March 1, state legislation goes into effect that allows parents/guardians to elect for their children to not wear a mask in schools. As a school division, we continue to be concerned about the health of our Fairfax community and strongly recommend that all students continue to participate in universal masking for the protection of students and staff with health concerns.
As we work through this change, we will honor our value of a caring culture. We will respect each other and show compassion and kindness for those who have different needs and viewpoints. At the center of everything we do is the children we serve. It is their well-being that we must work to protect.
Please review the following information about upcoming changes.
To Elect For Your Child Not to Wear a Mask in School
Starting March 1, parents and guardians may elect for their children not to wear a mask on school property. There will be no formal process required for those who elect for their child not to wear a mask on school property, including during School Age Child Care (SACC). Please talk with your child before March 1 so they will be aware of your family’s preference for mask wearing at school.
Exceptions
Universal mask wearing continues to apply in the following scenarios::
- On school buses/vans (federal requirement)
- During off-campus activities where masks are required by the venue (ex: field trip)
- Students enrolled in Head Start Program (federal requirement)
- When attending school on days 6-10 of a quarantine (families who do not want their student to wear a mask on these days will need to complete the full 10 day quarantine at home.)
- When participating in Test to Stay
Positivity Project
We continue to work to empower students to build positive relationships through the Positivity Project. For the next week, the focus will be on Enthusiasm.
You approach life with excitement and energy. You energize people around you.
“Each one of us has a fire in our heart for something. It’s our goal in life to find it and keep it lit.” -MARY LOU RETTON

 National Reading Month
March is National Reading Month! National Reading Month is always a fun-filled month of activities to celebrate reading with learners and their families. The National Education Association’s “Read Across America” initiative has always been a big part of this celebration. Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading. This year's theme is "Cultivate Compassion".
National Read Across America Day is on Wednesday, March 2 and is the day to kick-off a month of reading events at our school. This year, we are going to Read Across America with stories about immigrants and refugees. Through these stories we will uncover their journeys to America and witness both their joys and their struggles. What will unfold is a better understanding of what we mean when we say that the United States is a nation of immigrants. With each story – some true and some fiction – we will discover the rich cultures – languages, holidays, traditions, fashion, food, beliefs, and values – immigrants and refugees bring with them from their home countries adding value to the rich, diverse fabric of America.
