Halley Elementary Presents…

Building Resilience in Children

by Mary Smith, Parent Coach

Thursday, February 24th 7:00-8:00pm

Zoom link: https://myfcpsk12.zoom.us/j/99345169306?pwd=L0g1czZ1NjY1M21zRDVZaExocFRmUT09

How can I give my child resilience?

While you can’t just give a child resilience, you can absolutely nurture it.  Resilience is sort of paradoxical: we want them to toughen up, but kids need some hand holding to turn hard times into resilience. The good news? You can use any of the day-to-day parenting struggles or successes to help shape your child’s brain – and bolster resiliency.

Mary’s going to share with you the simple brain science behind resiliency and give you easy-to-implement tools to help your child develop the emotional hardware to deal with whatever life throws at them. The even better news? These same tools lead to better behavior, increased cooperation and more calm at home. And who can’t use that?!

Submit any questions before-hand here: https://mspc.cc/presentation-questions

Materials are located in the FCPS Willow Oaks lobby and members of the Elementary Language Arts team will be available to greet visitors.

Understanding ESSER III Funding’s Impact on Student Success

Last fall, FCPS received $188.6 million in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) funding. These funds have helped us safely reopen our schools and to keep them open. We have also been able to address the impacts of COVID-19 on students. If you are not familiar with ESSER III, here are a few things you should know about how it impacts student success.  ESSER III focus areas include:

  • Prevention and mitigation strategies to help keep schools open and safe for students and staff.
  • Academic intervention services, such as tutoring, after-school programs, and summer learning programs.
  • Professional development to ensure our schools are welcoming and culturally responsive to all students and families.
  • Multilingual engagement to ensure information is accessible to all families.
  • Additional support for students’ social emotional needs.

At Halley Elementary

We have used ESSER III funding to...

  • Purchase resources that will enhance reading and math instruction
  • Provide professional learning opportunities to staff
  • Hire additional staff and resources to support intervention and social emotional learning.

There will be two opportunities for you to tell us how well FCPS is meeting ESSER III requirements around a safe return to in-person instruction and continuity of learning. Please stay tuned for details! Visit the ESSER III webpage for more information.

Doodle for Google Contest 2022 is Here!

Doodle for Google 02.18.22

Each year Google puts out their theme for their Google for Doodle contest.  This year, 2022, the theme is

I care for myself by…

We all have a lot going on - and now more than ever, it’s important for us to take care of our bodies and minds. What are your favorite things to do that make you feel better when you’re feeling down? How do you take a break? What activities make you feel calm or give you energy? What or who brings joy to your heart? Our theme this year invites you to share how you nurture your mind, body, and/or spirit as you face the opportunities and challenges every new day brings.

Contest deadline is March 4, 2022.  You may learn more about the contest, the rules, and how to enter here:  https://doodles.google.com/d4g/
