Waples Mill Updates 2/18/22

Good Afternoon Waples Mill Families,

Here are this week's updates:

Presidents' Day Holiday on Monday, Feb. 21

Monday, February 21st is Presidents' Day, and it is a holiday for students and staff. There is no school on this day.

"I LOVE My School" - PTA Writing Contest

Beginning this week, Waples Mill Elementary students can participate in the i9 Sports “I LOVE My School” Writing Contest! Students received an entry sheet from their teacher (Tuesday folders) to write about why they love Waples Mill Elementary! Kindergartners can draw a picture. Parents just complete the info at the bottom of the entry sheet. Students turn in the completed form to their teacher.

The school with the highest % of participation wins a $1000 grant and all classes with 100% participation will have a chance to win a Pizza Party! On top of that, everyone that submits an entry will receive an email with a $20 credit for any season of i9 Sports soccer, basketball, flag football, baseball or volleyball! Help us earn the $1000 grant! The submission deadline is Friday, February 25th.

Thank you, WMES PTA!

On behalf of our entire staff, thank you to the WMES PTA and the parent volunteers that provided the "Sweet Shoppe" on Feb. 14! We feel lucky to be part of such a caring community.

Kindergarten Registration for 22-23 School Year

Kindergarten Registration for the 2022-2023 school year is open! FCPS is conducting its annual Survey of Preschool Children. If you have a child eligible for Kindergarten this August (rising Kindergarten students need to be 5 years old before September 30, 2022), please complete the form that was sent home and return it to our office by March 31st.  If you have no need for the form, please check with your neighbors who may have children eligible for kindergarten and give the form to them. Questions? Please contact our registrar, Carla Collins at 703-390-7700 or via email at chcollins@fcps.edu.

Elementary Language Arts Resource Review

Parents, students, and community members have a unique opportunity to help FCPS select important learning resources. These reviews do not happen frequently, so selected resources will be in classrooms for years and are a significant financial investment.

Resources for elementary language arts are being reviewed through February 28. Interested individuals can review and provide feedback on digital resources online. Physical texts can be reviewed at the Willow Oaks Administrative Center in the lobby. Please ask about the books at the reception desk from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m., Monday-Friday. In-person review hours will be extended to 7 p.m. on February 24. You are encouraged to review both sets of resources for the full catalog of resources under review. Learn more about the elementary language arts resource review here.

FCPS CARES Program

The FCPS CARES Program is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story, so we can all acknowledge the good work of FCPS employees.

Daily Health Screening Questionnaire Reminder

Parents/Guardians are strongly encouraged to monitor their children for symptoms of infectious illness every day through home-based symptom screening and students who are sick should not come to school.

Please review the daily health screening questionnaire before sending your child to school.

Any student, staff or visitor demonstrating symptoms of illness should stay home to help “Stop the Spread” of COVID-19.
