From The Principal
Family,
Happy belated Valentine’s Day to all of you. I have shared my heart with you over the last few years, and here is another opportunity to do so through Valentine's Day! I hope this message finds each of you safe and well after this glorious week. I have to say that it was indeed a busy week as we have had so much going on around the building. The students are busy not only working to begin the closeout of the year (it will be here before you know it), but also preparing for what is to come next year. It is truly an exciting time. At the same time, it can be somewhat stressful for our students as they juggle the many balls in the air and everything else that is on their plates.
That being said, I will continue to ask that you have the quick check-ins with your children to see how they are navigating this very busy time of year. Inside the building we will also continue to monitor them, as well as create opportunities for them to have access to their trusted adults on the staff. If you are finding that your child is experiencing difficulties and you need some additional assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to us so that we can wrap resources around your child as soon as possible to ensure they feel supported on all sides.
Flipping the script a bit here, I want to share some great news about two of our Stallion superstars, Brian Gordon and Katherine Helms. I wrote about Brian and Katherine last week. Brian traveled down to Virginal Beach this week to defend his state wrestling title in his weight class. I am so proud to be able to say that he successfully did so and now is a 2-time state wrestling champion, 4-time state placer, and a 4 time district and region champion.
And of course let's put the spotlight on Katherine Helms (I affectiontely call her "Swimma" in the hallways)! Katherine went down to Stafford and swam away with the 200 and 500 freestyle championships!
As we celebrate these phenomenal accomplishments, let’s not forget about all of the work and effort that goes into achieving this level of success put in by those who have worked with them both on and off the mat, or in and out of the pool. Their teammates, the coaches, the teachers and staff in the building, and most of all their Families. Regardless of the level of success by any of our athletes, I want to say thank you to everyone who continues to pour yourselves into every one of our students in some form or fashion.
I am also proud to say that we have 4 students who have advanced beyond the region level for Governor’s School acceptance in the academic arena. I have mentioned others (Fine and Performing Arts and World Languages) in my previous messages recently. This is such an incredible accomplishment because our students are competing against so many other students for these coveted positions. I have not received confirmation on announcing the names yet, but I can say that the areas in which the students have applied for are Agriculture (1 student) and Math, Science, and Technology (3 students). Exciting times!
Spring sports kick off this week and we are hoping to engage even more participants in an activity to connect them to South County. Even if your child is not a great athlete, there are opportunities within our sports teams to participate. Team managers contribute and are truly embraced by students and coaches as members of those respective teams. If not a sports team, encourage your child to connect with an after school activity that takes place on Wednesday and Thursdays. These opportunities can be invaluable and could spark an idea or some motivation to do other great things within our school community.
In a couple of weeks, we will have another opportunity to get together to chat in person. I will be hosting another Parents'/Principal’s Chat on March 11th. I am putting this out here well in advance so that none of you are caught off guard! 😊 I hope to see all of you there, but I also just sit in silence with you all and embrace the calmness. Okay, that is never going to happen, so bring your questions and lets work through this stuff like we always do.
Well that is all that I have for you this week. As always, I want to thank you for being so supportive and understanding. Each of you, no matter if we have had a conversation in person, over the phone, or via email, or even not at all (believe it or not) has delivered to me a message of support and confidence that we are doing good things together for our students. Thank you for those messages by way of a pat on the back, or a challenge for us to remedy or overcome. In all situations, we have been enabled to work to become better educators for your children and that is always welcomed. Have a safe and enjoyable rest of your long weekend. Hug your child for me and ask them to come and tell me about it! Take care and continue to be safe. #OneStallion

We have a website where you can browse our spirit wear and find a PDF Order Form for download; invoicing for payment on MySchoolBucks will be sent after your order is fulfilled. You can also find our kiosk in the cafeteria during lunches on odd days (5th period) as well as in the gym lobby by way of a retail vending machine!
Thank you in advance for supporting the Entrepreneurship & Marketing program as well as the Work and Transition program here at South County.
