Message from Dr. Smith

Hello Bruin Families,

“Enjoying success requires the ability to adapt.  Only by being open to change will you have a true opportunity to get the most from your talent.”—Nolan Ryan

With March less than two weeks away and spring approaching, we are moving forward in our preparation to seek new perspectives, handle new challenges, and usher in new beginnings.  This week Senate Bill 739 was passed and will take effect on March 1st. Lake Braddock will continue to require universal masking per FCPS until March 1st or further notice.  If you have any questions regarding the FCPS policies, please reach out to your Subschool.  We will share any updates as they arise.  We know changes will be welcomed by some and an anxiety stressor to others. As a school, we are committed to ensuring that all students are healthy, safe, and feel valued in our community. We will continue to focus our attention and energy on providing high quality instruction, promoting student engagement in and out the classroom, and celebrating the successes of our students and staff.

We began our week with a Winter Sports State Walk where we honored our 57 student athletes in Gymnastics, Wrestling, Indoor Track and Field, and Swim and Dive who are competing in state championships. Our Girls’ Basketball team will play in the District Finals on Friday. Our celebration of student talents continues with the opening of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe this weekend. If this is not enough excitement, we had an opportunity to witness our students participate in civic engagement when they organized a walkout to raise awareness about sexual harassment policies and procedures.

Next week, we will welcome Mrs. Kearns back to her role as Associate Principal. We are excited for her return and look forward to the new perspectives she will bring to the Administration team and school. We are forever grateful for the work and dedication that Ms. Hampton and Ms. Naughton brought to their acting roles. Building the leadership capacity in others and providing opportunities for all to grow is what makes our school a true professional learning community.

As we approach the extended weekend, we hope you are able to attend some of these wonderful events to see our students perform at their highest level. We also wish you a safe and relaxing long weekend.

United as Bruins,

Daniel W. Smith, Ed.D.

Calendar Reminder: Schools and Offices Closed on February 21 for Presidents Day

As a reminder, all schools and offices will be closed on Monday, February 21, for the Presidents Day holiday. FCPS COVID-19 testing sites will also be closed.

Classes will resume on Tuesday, February 22. See the complete 2021-22 school year calendar.

March SOL Writing Testing

In the past both English 11 and Grade 8 students had to complete a 2-day Writing SOL in March as part of the state’s testing requirements. However, recent updates in testing policies have enabled these students to partake in alternative assessments. Grade 8 students will complete a local alterative assessment (LAA) during their English 8 classes. For more information about this alternative assessment, please read the FCPS site on Local Alternative Assessments.

Students in English 11, English 11 Honors, and juniors in Dual Enrollment English completed the WorkKeys Business Writing in January or February in order to earn their verified credit in writing. Students who did not pass the WorkKeys Writing or did not take the WorkKeys Business Writing, will have to complete the March Writing SOL. English 11 teachers have communicated to students their WorkKeys Writing scores. The families of students still needing to take the SOL Writing in March will be notified.

COVID Updates and Information

For the most up-to-date information, please see the FCPS website for Return to School and COVID-19 Testing.

COVID Protocols for FCPS-Sponsored Activities

Current FCPS COVID mitigation strategies are to be followed for all FCPS-sponsored activities, whether the activity occurs at an FCPS facility or off-site. When FCPS-sponsored activities are held off-site, participants will follow the more rigorous COVID protocols. If the venue requires more strict protocols, all participants will adhere to the venue’s requirements. When activities are held at venues with less stringent COVID mitigation protocols, participants will follow current FCPS practices.

Reminder Regarding Optional COVID Testing for Students

Participation in COVID-19 screening testing for the general student population will be voluntary and will require parent/legal guardian consent for each student prior to participation in COVID-19 screening testing. Participation may be discontinued at any time upon parent/legal guardian request by revoking your consent in the online registration portal at https://fcpstestingsite.com. You may follow the process for revoking consent by unchecking the “Testing Consent“ checkbox on the homepage. This revocation can be reinstated by re-checking the “Testing Consent“ checkbox.  A separate “Testing Consent“ checkbox is provided for each child listed. For support with the online registration portal, you may also email fcps@lts.com or call LTS Portal Support at 571-354-6205.

Your consent in this portal remains valid until you revoke it.

For more information, please see the FCPS website on COVID-19 testing.

WIN Time Enrichment Activities for MS

For the remainder of the school year, Lake Braddock will be offering some enrichment activities for MS students during WIN Time to engage with LBSS staff and some of their fellow Bruins. Students should signup via Schoology sign up form (see details below). For the first couple weeks, we will accept walk-ins (as long as students have a signed all pass from their advisory teacher). Once max capacity is reached, students will be asked to return to advisory and signup online to ensure that they secure a participation spot for WIN Time Enrichment Activities.

WIN Time Enrichment will occur on Gold Days during advisory from 9:45am until 10:25am with Mr. Hines and other LBSS staff in the cafeteria. In order to participate, student must sign up using the signup form and receive a confirmation note to use as a hall pass during WIN Time on Gold Days to gain access to the cafeteria.

JOIN WIN TIME ENRICHMENT SCHOOLOGY (to access the signup form; released at 8am on Gold Days).

Schoology Access Code: PHPK-C5C6-RVVMF

New Group Join Link

WIN Time Enrichment will be offered to students on a "first come, first serve" basis. The confirmation page from the signup form should be used as students’ hall pass during WIN Time. The signup form will be closed once we reach the max capacity number for signups (appx. 100 students per day). Only students that have the confirmation page from the signup form will be authorized to enter WIN Time Enrichment Activities on Gold Days in the cafeteria. We are starting at the middle school level, but activity offerings will eventually be offered to HS students on select days as well. Stay tuned Bruins!

Provide Feedback on FCPS' Use of Federal (ESSER III) Funding

We encourage you to participate in a public engagement opportunity related to how FCPS is meeting ESSER III requirements for ensuring a safe return to in-person instruction and providing continuity of learning. As a reminder, last fall, FCPS received $188.8 million in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) funding to address the impacts of COVID-19 on students. Grant focus areas include:

  • Prevention and mitigation strategies to help keep schools open and safe for students and staff.
  • Academic intervention services, such as tutoring, after-school programs, and summer learning programs.
  • Equity professional development to ensure our schools are welcoming and culturally responsive to all students and families.
  • Multilingual engagement to ensure information is accessible to all families.
  • Additional support for students’ social-emotional needs.

All of these areas impact student success! Please provide input today via our online feedback form. For more information on the ESSER III grant, please watch this video and visit the FCPS website.

How to Stay In Touch

Please stay in touch with us throughout the year by:

Attendance Lines

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS:

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS:

Procedures for Picking Up a Student Early

  • Prior to 8:00 a.m., the student must present a note from the parent to their subschool office. Notes must include time of dismissal, reason for leaving, and a contact number. Parents of middle school students must also include the name of the person picking the student up. Please note that this person must be listed as an emergency contact. At the time of early check-out, middle school parents must come in Entrance 1 and meet their student at the security desk. Anyone picking up a middle school student must bring a photo ID with them. High school parents may pick up students outside Entrance 1.
  • Notes are strongly preferred for early check-out, but if a parent is unable to send a note with the student, the parent should call the subschool office as early as possible. All calls will be confirmed by callback to a phone number on the emergency care card. Regrettably, if the parent did not send a note with the student, the parent will be required to park, come into the school to furnish a note, and pick up the student. Without advance notice provided by a note, there may be a wait until our staff is able to locate the student, particularly if the student is at lunch or in a physical education class. We further regret that without advance notice, we are unable to accommodate requests for early dismissal after 2:15 pm.
  • In either case, students must check out at the subschool office when leaving school and check in with the security desk upon return. Students who leave school without checking out properly will be marked unexcused and may face disciplinary action (if returning to school, students are also subject to search). Students must contact all teachers of any class to be missed.

Read our full Attendance procedures at our website.

Late Bus Information

Late bus days are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Buses will pick up students in the front of the building with a departure time of approximately 4:45 pm.  Please check  StudentVue and ParentVue for your student's late bus number and stop. If you have any questions, please contact your student's appropriate subschool.
