Thank You to all our Food Services Staff!
Dear Bailey’s ES Families,
Happy Friday! Today’s sunny weather was a great end to the week! The sound of students enjoying the 60-degree weather at recess was music to our ears! This week, we celebrated our kindergarten writers, introduced some of our second-grade students to the math version of Wordle, and supported our first-grade students as they practiced sharing their thinking and understanding another person’s ideas. Next week will be a week of fun and learning as our students celebrate Valentine’s Day and the 100th day of school.
As always, thank you for your continued for your support of our school. We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

COVID-19 Vaccine Clinics
Fairfax Health District and Fairfax County Public Schools are hosting 19 COVID-19 vaccine clinics at 9 schools for students ages 5-11 years. Schools include Hutchinson, Annandale Terrace, Woodlawn, Centreville, Providence, and Franklin Sherman. Attendees are not required to be a student at that school. Vaccines will not be available for those 12 years and older. No appointment is necessary, vaccinations are free, and children must be accompanied by a parent or another responsible adult.
More details are available here.
Contact Tracing
The Virginia Department of Health recently announced that contract tracing in schools may be limited only to outbreaks. However, the CDC continues to recommend contact tracing, in combination with testing, wearing a well-fitting mask, and quarantine and isolation, as effective strategies to identify people with COVID-19 (cases) and to reduce transmission.
FCPS will continue to implement CDC recommendations to the greatest extent practicable, to prevent or reduce the spread of COVID-19 in schools, and to keep our schools open for learning. As a result, FCPS will continue contact tracing until further notice.
Coming Soon: Bailey's
Read-A-Thon & Story Nights!
The PTA is excited to host its 9th annual Read-A-Thon from Tuesday, February 22nd - Monday, March 7th. Traditionally, we hold an in person storytelling night to kick off our reading adventures. Last year we switched to a virtual format featuring bedtime stories spread across the Read-A-Thon. It was very popular and our Halloween virtual story night was so well attended we reached the PTA's Zoom capacity!
We are looking to offer another round of virtual Tiger Tales Bedtime Stories again this year. If you are interested in reading or telling a story to students, please sign up here. We welcome read alouds, Tiny Toy tales, or story telling of any kind in both English and Spanish.
Story nights start at 7 pm and typically end around 7:30/7:45. At the moment we have 3 story nights scheduled. If there is a lot of interest from staff in participating, we will open up a few more nights - but we understand everyone has a lot on their plates at the moment.
The Read-A-Thon is a way for the PTA to partner with both schools to foster a love of reading among our students. It occurs as our school community celebrates Read Across America Week. Students track their reading minutes for the duration of the contest. Reading during school and at home counts towards their total. Being read to by a teacher or someone at home also counts (so will story nights)! Students can also choose to fundraise by collecting pledges for minutes read or a flat pledge amount for participation.
Prizes are awarded for top readers (based on minutes read) AND top fundraisers.

Understanding ESSER III Funding’s
Impact on Student Success
Last fall, FCPS received $188.6 million in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) funding. These funds have helped us safely reopen our schools and to keep them open. We have also been able to address the impacts of COVID-19 on students. If you are not familiar with ESSER III, here are a few things you should know about how it impacts student success. ESSER III focus areas include:
- Prevention and mitigation strategies to help keep schools open and safe for students and staff.
- Academic intervention services, such as tutoring, after-school programs, and summer learning programs.
- Professional development to ensure our schools are welcoming and culturally responsive to all students and families.
- Multilingual engagement to ensure information is accessible to all families.
- Additional support for students’ social emotional needs.
There will be two opportunities for you to tell us how well FCPS is meeting ESSER III requirements around a safe return to in-person instruction and continuity of learning. Please stay tuned for details! Visit the ESSER III webpage for more information.
Community Review of Elementary English Language Arts Basal Instructional Resources
Fairfax County Public Schools will adopt new Elementary School Language Arts Basal Instructional Resources for the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 school years. A review committee composed of community members, administrators, and teachers will meet in February and March to review the instructional materials under consideration and community feedback. Public review of the recommended materials is part of the process for selecting new resources.
Elementary English Language Arts basal instructional resources may be accessed in person and online January 31 through February 28, 2022. Digital materials for public review and comment will be available at the following link: https://www.fcps.edu/node/36853. Those reviewing instructional materials may complete an electronic comment sheet available at the following link: https://forms.gle/NyDax8N3NXQBp1mh8. Hard copies of instructional materials will also be available in the lobby of Willow Oaks Administrative Center.
Willow Oaks is open each business day from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and extended hours will be provided until 7:00 p.m. on the following days: February 3, February 10, February 17, and February 24, 2022. Kiss and Ride Information
With cold weather approaching, please have conversations with your child about morning and afternoon K&R to ensure drop-off & pick-up run smoothly:
Morning K&R:
Make sure your child has their coat on, backpack/lunch box in hand so they are ready to go when a staff member opens their door.
Afternoon K&R:
The Bailey’s K&R team reminds students to put on coats, hats and backpacks while waiting for pick up.
Please have conversations with your child(ren) about being listeners and being ready when called. It is getting cold and sometimes students may be waiting outside for a couple of minutes for their cars.

Attendance Matters!
This is the time of year when winter weather and children’s illnesses can take a toll on school attendance. But it’s important to get your children to school every day possible.
- If you are unsure whether to send your children to school, consult your doctor or this website for guidance: https://www.fcps.edu/about-fcps/policies-regulations-and-notices/attendance-policies/attendance-when-should-i-send-my. Our school nurse is also a terrific resource for chronic health conditions.
- Do what you can to keep your children healthy. Dress them warmly for the cold weather and make sure they’ve got hats and gloves. Encourage them to wash their hands regularly, and send them to school with a bottle of hand sanitizer.
- Help your child learn to persevere. Today, they learn to overcome a snowdrift. In the future, they will have the grit to triumph over even greater obstacles to their dreams.
Heartfelt mentoring has tangible effects. Mentors are an asset in a young person’s life and help to build a stronger, more positive community that benefits ALL children and youth. Learn more about the impact of BeFriend-A-Child mentors who have a heart for children
During this time of COVID-19, the Parenting Education Programs will continue to offer virtual classes for Winter 2022. Please click here to submit a family enrollment form.

Sometimes children need to talk about their feelings. Being able to speak to trusted adults can create a supportive space where that child feels safe to share his or her innermost thoughts. A caring adult like an aunt, a grandparent, a coach or a mentor can be instrumental in encouraging a child to achieve their dreams. Identify the people who can help support your children.

Parenting Education Programs recommends reading The Day You Begin, a # 1 New York Times Bestseller. Jacqueline Woodson's lyrical text and Rafael López's dazzling art reminds us that we all feel like outsiders sometimes-and how brave it is that we go forth anyway. This beautiful and inclusive story encourages children to find the beauty in their own lives and share it with the world. And that sometimes, when we reach out and begin to share our stories, others will be happy to meet us halfway.
