National School Counseling Week: February 7-11
It is not too late! We are so proud of our amazing School Counselors: Ms. Esther Bae, Ms. Caitlin Ivey, Ms. Ariana Larson and Mr. Zishan Mohammed. We appreciate their support of all of our students and programs. Reach out and share a note of thanks using this form.
Gaming on Student Laptops
Recently we have seen an uptick in the number of students downloading unauthorized apps and gaming on their FCPS issued laptops, which are violations of the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) all families sign annually. Unauthorized programs and add ons can interfere with the function of FCPS instructional applications.
Please ask your students to review the update in the student Schoology course as well as the AUP guidelines. While we are working on solutions for limiting access to unauthorized downloads and gaming platforms, it is important to remind students that violations of the AUP may result in disciplinary actions which could include loss of access to an FCPS device. Families can sign up to monitor student computer usage:

As always, I welcome your feedback, questions and suggestions. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me.

Celebrations in Our Community: February is Black History Month
February is Black History Month, an annual celebration of achievements by Black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month.
At Rocky Run we started this month off with a schoolwide Rock Time lesson on “The Danger of a Single Story.” Students had the opportunity to watch a portion of this video featuring Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a Nigerian writer, and then had time for discussion and reflection. We encourage you to continue these important conversations at home, perhaps by watching this video as a family and then sharing your own experiences and connections to Adichie’s message.
If you are interested in learning more, here are a few additional resources to get you started, shared from the Center for Racial Justice in Education:
7th Grade (Rising 8th) Academic Advising
7th grade students received a presentation from counselors during Rock Time on Wednesday, Feb 9. They also received a copy of the course selection sheet between Thursday and Friday. All students will have a chance to meet with their school counselor individually next week (2/14-2/18) through science class. Please help your child get ready for their one-on-one conversation with his/her counselor by reviewing the following information. Contact your child's counselor with any questions.

Understanding ESSER III Funding’s Impact on Student Success
Understanding ESSER III Funding’s Impact on Student Success
Last fall, FCPS received $188.6 million in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) funding. These funds have helped us safely reopen our schools and to keep them open. We have also been able to address the impacts of COVID-19 on students. If you are not familiar with ESSER III, here are a few things you should know about how it impacts student success. ESSER III focus areas include:
- Prevention and mitigation strategies to help keep schools open and safe for students and staff.
- Academic intervention services, such as tutoring, after-school programs, and summer learning programs.
- Professional development to ensure our schools are welcoming and culturally responsive to all students and families.
- Multilingual engagement to ensure information is accessible to all families.
- Additional support for students’ social emotional needs.
There will be two opportunities for you to tell us how well FCPS is meeting ESSER III requirements around a safe return to in-person instruction and continuity of learning. Please stay tuned for details! Visit the ESSER III webpage for more information.
Book Swap Coming Soon!
We are excited to bring back the annual Book Swap! Students are invited to bring in gently used middle school books that other students might enjoy. Bring the books you are donating to the Library between February 21-25 to get up to 3 swap tickets for new-to-you books.
The Book Swap will take place during Rock Time on February 28. Please do not buy new books for this event. Any questions? Contact school Librarian, Stephanie Crochet (secrochet@fcps.edu).
