1. Message from Dr. Floyd
Good afternoon Woodson Families:
Today is P.S. I Love You day! It is a day when student leaders greet students at the entrances with lollipops and stickers and each locker has a positive, friendly message on it. Students are reminding one another that they matter. Showing these acts of kindness are simple ways to make one another smile. I encourage families this weekend to remind one another that you are loved!
Every now and then we have messages that need to go to staff, parents and students. I will use Schoology to facilitate this which means if you receive a message from Schoology with the subject line: “Carlyn Floyd posted a school update on Schoology.” Please know it is from me and it will be a message regarding something important at Woodson.
Parents of Seniors - please make sure to visit the Class of 2022 website for important information regarding events and graduation.
I want to remind our families, students and staff about the resources available if ever someone should feel unsafe in school. FCPS offers a safety tip line that can be used anonymously at any time. Woodson HS also has an anonymous bullying reporting form which comes directly to administrators at Woodson HS. I have received a few tips from both that have led to a resolution of situations. Our school counselors and administrators are available at all times as well. Reach out with an email to any counselor or give them a call. Our administrators are the staff members who monitor phone calls and emails outside school hours most often. Please don’t hesitate to reach out!
Please encourage your son/daughter to get to class in the morning – on time. Tardy sweeps will start again in the next couple weeks with after school detentions. Getting to class on time is not only the best way to start the day, but important to learning. Tardiness does disrupt classroom instruction and students miss important information, even if it is the “just the announcements.” If you are dropping your son/daughter off at school, please do so with enough time for them to walk to their classroom by 8:10AM. We need everyone’s help as the number of students late is simply unacceptable. I appreciate your assistance and understanding in this matter.
I hope everyone is able to enjoy the weather today and tomorrow before winter make it’s return!
Stay safe,
Dr. Floyd
2. P.S. I Love You Day
Woodson celebrated P.S. I Love You Day today!
The goal of P.S. I Love You Day is to spread happiness and love in order to decrease bullying and promote mental health awareness. Students wear purple to raise awareness among students about mental health in the hopes of making difficult conversations easier.
Enjoy pictures of handwritten notes placed on student lockers to brighten our day.

6. Model Judiciary Club
The Model Judiciary Club runs in-house mock trials in the Fall where members play lawyers, witnesses, and judges in a case. Based on those mock trials and prior experience on the team, the club forms a competitive mock trial team that competes against other schools in the Virginia Law Related Institute’s state-wide competition.
The mock trial team analyzes the case, reviews the evidence, prepares direct and cross examination questions, opening statements, and closing argument – all of the elements of a real trial.
The VLRE conducted two regional competitions. They were virtual because of COVID-19 concerns. Our team competed this past weekend against 16 other teams. A 3-hour mock trial was conducted over Zoom for each of the four rounds – that’s 7-8 hours of trials on both Saturday and Sunday. Our mock trial team participated as the plaintiff in two rounds and the defense in two rounds. The mock trials are judged by attorneys, judges, or experienced national mock trial competitors.
Based on the scoring of the judges, our mock trial team won two of the four trials and was ranked in the top 10 in the region. This earned our mock trial a bid to the Virginia State Finals that will be conducted March 19-20. It will also be virtual and run in a similar manner as the regional. You can learn more about the VLRE mock trial competition here: https://www.govlre.org/mock-trial
Two of our team members were recognized as being in the top 5-6 witnesses for the entire region (Naina Davidar and Kyle Hill).
Congratulations to our mock trial team: Ananya Sai, Amelia Herson, Jarod Ward, Alek Ramseaur, Vy Nguyen, Naina Davidar, Amelia Weston, Kyle Hill, Declan McAlvey, Josie Owens, Bomi Shin, Chance Jones.

15. How do I check out my student from school?
Please let the Attendance Office know if you need your student to leave school early. You can notify Attendance 3 different ways:
- Submit the online attendance form and have your student pick up their pink checkout pass from the Attendance Office (E107) between classes or during lunch.
- Student brings a note to the Attendance Office before 9:45am. The student will be issued a pink pass to leave class at the appointed time. The note must include the following - student name, date and time of when student is leaving, and reason for early check-out, student ID, parent signature and contact number.
- Call the attendance line, 703-503-4800 and select Option 3. After leaving a message, please have your student pick up their pink checkout pass from the Attendance Office (E107) between classes or during lunch.
At the time of dismissal, your son/daughter will bring the pink check-out pass back to the Attendance Office for verification before meeting you outside.
If returning to school that same day, students must check in at the Attendance office before going back to class, even if it is between classes.
If one of the options above is not followed, we cannot guarantee a speedy checkout, so please make sure you notify the attendance office prior to picking up your son/daughter to ensure you make your appointment or commitment on time.
Due to staff responsibilities at the end of the day, we are not able to honor unannounced early dismissals within 15 minutes of school dismissal.
For full details on Attendance Procedures, please visit the Attendance page on the Woodson website.
