PTSO Grant Applications Being Accepted February 7th - 25th
What is the Grant Program?
The PTSO uses a large portion of our membership dues to assist with supplying teachers, parents, students and staff with funds to purchase various items. Anyone who is part of the Woodson community can apply for a grant, and you do not have to be a member of the PTSO to do so. What are some things we have helped with in the past? Last year all of our grants went toward assisting teachers with equipment purchases such as document cameras, 2nd monitors, desk chairs to help make virtual teaching more comfortable. This Fall we granted funds to the German Club, the Pop in to Pop Out Stress event, lectern supplies for the Social Studies Department, tuners for the orchestra and much more. Anything is worthy of a request if you think it will help the Woodson community at large, or some portion of it.
What you should know before requesting funds:
Before submitting a grant request, it is important that you have discussed/reviewed your request with your department head, Dan Checkosky or Dr. Floyd. Student requests for clubs should be reviewed with the club sponsor before submitting as well.
The Grant Committee will review all applications, and then will present the proposals and funding amounts to the PTSO general membership for voting. In its review, the Committee considers the following factors including but not limited to:
- The degree of direct relationship to the student program of study.
- The number of students that the proposal benefits (general student body or a sub-set).
- The extent of impact on the total school community.
- The efforts that your group made requesting funding from others (boosters, parent groups, department funds, etc), or fundraising efforts toward reaching your overall funding goal (car washes, bake sales, etc).
In compliance with PTSO guidelines and IRS regulations for non-profit organizations, the W.T. Woodson PTSO grants may not be used for association memberships or activities that result in primarily personal gains (by students, parents or teachers/staff).
When can I apply?
The 2022 Spring grant window is 2/7 - 2/25 (firm). The committee will then meet to discuss all of the requests, ask any follow up questions as needed, and present the requests at the PTSO meeting for voting. Decisions will be emailed to all who requested grant money, whether awarded or not, after the vote at the PTSO March meeting.

One Night Only! Friday, February 11th - WTW Drama Presents: Silent Sky
Woodson is doing a staged reading of the play “Silent Sky,” based on the life of scientist Henrietta Leavitt. This staged reading will take place in the planetarium, proving a dynamic backdrop of stars, to highlight this incredible woman’s life! This one night only event, on Friday, February 11th at 7pm, will feature a “pay what you can” model with all proceeds going to financial relief for students the next time there is a Woodson Drama New York trip.
There is very limited seating for this event, but we hope to see you at this lovely intersection of Arts and Science! For tickets click here!
"Silent Sky" tells the true story of Henrietta Leavitt, the astronomer ahead of her time. It is 1900, and Henrietta has the opportunity to work at Harvard University as a human computer, mapping the stars but receiving no scientific credit. Yet Leavitt's legacy and work will go on to shape the scientific community. Come see the lovely exploration of the symbiotic relationship between art and science. This dynamic staged reading will be presented in the planetarium (room F107).
The best Entrance to use is Entrance 19.
