Haycock Hello 2.11.22

hundreds

Dear Haycock Families,

It has been inspiring and amazing to see the products our 6th grade students created for their National History Day projects.  The research, analysis, and deep learning students engaged in while working on this project are the epitome of the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate skills.  We are so proud of all our 6th grade students!

Our 5th grade students enjoyed an Under the Sea assembly today.  They had the opportunity to see all sorts of sea creatures up close, reinforcing their Science unit on Oceans.  If you have a 5th grader, ask them what the midnight zone is and how density and salinity factor in.

It was delightful to see our Kindergarten students dressed as their 100 year old selves on our 100th day of school.  They celebrated the 100th day in school in so many creative ways today.

Last fall, FCPS received $188.8 million in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) funding. These funds have helped us safely reopen our schools and keep them open. We have also been able to address the impacts of COVID-19 on students. Visit the ESSER III webpage for more information.

Some of the ways that we have used the ESSER III funding provided to Haycock include the following:

  • Purchased a 3 year school site license for Second Step- a program to support the social and emotional learning of all our students
  • Providing before school and during school math and reading interventions
  • Sending some staff members to be trained in Orton Gillingham reading instruction program
  • Sending some staff members to be trained in Ad +Vantage Math Recovery (AVMR)
  • Purchased additional math and reading instructional supplies (i.e. Reading Success, Math Fluency Kits)

We wish you and your family a great weekend.

With appreciation for your partnership,

Dr. Liz Beaty, Principal  embeaty@fcps.edu

Heather Boyd,AP  HABoyd@fcps.edu

Dana Chen, AP  dlchen@fcps.edu

Contact Tracing Update

While the Virginia Department of Health shifted the expectation for contact tracing in schools to only on outbreaks, the CDC continues to indicate that contact tracing, in combination with testing, wearing a well-fitting mask, and quarantine and isolation, are effective strategies to identify people with  COVID-19 (cases) and to reduce transmission.

FCPS has and continues to implement CDC recommendations, to the greatest extent practicable, to prevent or reduce the spread of COVID-19 in schools and to foster the continuation of in-person learning for students and staff. As a result, FCPS will continue contact tracing until further notice.

The following changes were effective 5:00 p.m. Friday, February 4:

  • FCPS Pause (Close Contact) Letter includes quarantine guidance and replaces the FCHD quarantine email to families
  • FCPS Student Quarantine Exemption and Attestation Form replaces the FCHD Vaccine Verification Survey (Will be embedded in the FCPS Pause Letter and available on the FCPS webpage, physical copies will be available if needed)

Monitoring COVID-19 cases is critical to maintaining a safe in-person learning environment for all students. Please continue to let us know if your child has tested positive for COVID-19 or may be a close contact. We will work with you through the process to return your child to the classroom as quickly as possible

Tips for Talking to Your Kids: Getting Past the Silent Treatment

We all want to keep current with our kids' lives, and it can be challenging to get kids to open up. Whether it's little things like knowing how their day was or big things like raising concerns for their wellbeing, it can be hard to get the conversation flowing.

Join local mental health professionals Mimi Weisberg and Heather Tedesco for a one-hour virtual program dedicated to family communication.  We'll use this article from the Washington Post as a jumping off point to share concrete tips and strategies for connecting with your kids through conversation.
