 Crossing Guard Appreciation
FCPS has 7 Nominations for Virginia's Outstanding Crossing Guard
Celebrate Your Community Crossing Guard on Wednesday
Seven of our 71 crossing guards were nominated for Outstanding Crossing Guard last month. None of our local crossing guards were selected, however, it is good to know that our guards are highly respected and an asset to our community. Tina Dove (pictured above), crossing guard at Canterbury Woods ES, Kings Park ES, and Robinson SS, is featured below.
When three-year-old August started walking his brother to kindergarten, he loved seeing Miss Tina the crossing guard in action! Miss Tina was STRONG! She could direct not only people, but cars and giant school buses! When she said STOP, they stopped, when she said GO, they went. August greeted Miss Tina daily and often asked her: Do you have a whistle? Can I hold your stop sign?
Miss Tina happily talked to August, while seamlessly keeping traffic moving safely. One day she asked August to help her direct traffic from the sidewalk, and so began his first day of training! He follows Miss Tina's every move, holding up a hand to stop traffic and waving cars through.
By Halloween, August was so devoted that Miss Tina surprised him with his own crossing guard uniform! It had a whistle and a handmade stop sign, just his size. August began wearing his uniform every day to help Miss Tina. Miss Tina even ends August's shifts by thanking him with a strong handshake. Their teamwork and enthusiasm is known throughout the community. Miss Tina's kindness, devotion to service and commitment to keeping our community safe has inspired a new generation of crossing guards!
Congratulations to all our nominees, here is a list of crossing guards receiving nominations were:
Sharen Lewin at Marshall Road ES
Roger Hartman at West Springfield ES
