Heroes often are equated to a person who stands out for a special reason, in the spotlight for all the public to see. Many of us have personal heroes in our lives who are lesser known or are only known to us.  They are heroes to us because of their values, good deeds, or how they have influenced our own lives.

We have invited our staff to share some of their heroes during Black History Month. We will highlight 2-3 of those heroes each week. We hope you enjoy learning about some of Fort Hunt's Heroes.

Los héroes a menudo se equiparán a una persona que se destaca por una razón especial, en el centro de atención para que todo el público lo vea. Muchos de nosotros tenemos héroes personales en nuestras vidas que son menos conocidos o solo los conocemos nosotros. Walter Cheek - Mr. Cheek is not a famous person. He is not an historical figure. Mr. Cheek is the reason I began my career in education. When I was a young college graduate, I was unsure of what career path I would take and was working to get my credentials to be a teacher. I had no idea whether teaching would be for me so I worked as a substitute teacher. I worked several times at Spring Ridge Middle in Southern Maryland where Mr. Cheek was a middle school science teacher. I often worked next door to his classroom (back when open classrooms were the trend).

He always came over and offered me advice, encouragement and support. When a long term substitute job came open, he recommended me to the principal. I worked for the rest of the year as an 8th grade teacher on the same team as Mr. Cheek and was hired permanently the year to follow. Over the next 3 years, I learned to be a student-centered teacher by watching him.

Mr. Cheek was an African American gentleman who had dedicated his whole career as a teacher to this small community comprised of mostly African American and military families. I saw him counsel, admonish, care for and educate so many young minds. He also encouraged many of the younger teachers with humor, a calming influence and with his example and advice. Once I watched him extinguish a stack of homework papers that had caught on fire being too close to a lit Bunsen burner. As he slapped out the fire, he did not stop teaching; kept right on talking. Very little rattled him. The students looked up to him and wanted to please him. I expect that he influenced and directed the trajectory of many young people into adulthood and young teachers into their careers, and I admire him for it. Mr. Walter Cheek is one of my heroes whom I would like to celebrate this Black History Month. - Tim Slayter

Walter Cheek: el Sr. Cheek no es una persona famosa. No es una figura histórica. Mr. Cheek es la razón por la que comencé mi carrera en educación. Cuando era un joven graduado de la universidad, no estaba seguro de qué carrera tomaría y estaba trabajando para obtener mis credenciales para ser maestro. No tenía idea si la enseñanza fuera para mí, así que trabajé como maestro suplente. Trabajé varias veces en Spring Ridge Middle en el sur de Maryland, donde el Sr. Cheek era profesor de ciencias en la escuela intermedia. Mientras apagaba el fuego, no dejaba de enseñar; siguió hablando. Muy poco lo inquietó. Los estudiantes lo admiraban y querían complacerlo. Espero que haya influido y dirigido la trayectoria de muchos jóvenes hacia la edad adulta y de jóvenes maestros hacia sus carreras, y lo admiro por ello. Roberto Clemente was a fantastic baseball player who was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1954 and played for them for 18 years. Roberto struggled with racial discrimination, but that didn't stop him from showing his abilities on the field. He lived a very simple life before he became a famous athlete. He used to practice by hitting bottle caps, so it was easy for him to hit the baseball. Clemente, a hero on and off the field, and a symbol for persevering through discrimination and overcoming hate, left his mark on the game as the greatest player ever to play.

Clemente was also known for his humanitarian work. He was on his way to deliver supplies to Nicaragua following a devastating earthquake when his plane crashed shortly after taking off on Dec. 31, 1972. The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to celebrate the life and legacy of this extraordinary man. The Roberto Clemente Award is given out every year to a player who displays humanitarian effort. - Carmen Muniz, 4th Grade Teacher and Lourdes Suarez, ESOL Teacher

Roberto Clemente fue un jugador de béisbol fantástico que fue reclutado por los Piratas de Pittsburgh en 1954 y jugó para ellos durante 18 años. Roberto luchó contra la discriminación racial, pero eso no le impidió mostrar sus habilidades en el campo. Vivió una vida muy simple antes de convertirse en un atleta famoso. Ernie Davis - One of my favorite African American heroes is Ernie Davis. He was an American football player who won the Heisman Trophy in 1961 and was its first African-American recipient. He played college football for Syracuse University and was the first pick in the 1962 NFL Draft, where he was selected by the Washington Redskins.

Davis was diagnosed with leukemia that same year, and died shortly after at age 23 without ever playing in a professional game. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1979 and was the subject of the 2008 film The Express: The Ernie Davis Story. 

Ernie was from Elmira, New York and is buried just a short distance from my grandmother in Westlawn Cemetery. My younger cousin had the honor of winning the Ernie Davis Award, given annually to the top high school football player in Chemung County, in 2013.

Dining Room Assistant Needed

PreK and Kindergarteners May Now Apply for Dual Language Immersion Programs

Online registration for the county-wide lottery for Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs opened Monday, January 24th. Current prekindergarten students may apply for the kindergarten immersion program and current kindergarten students may apply for the first grade immersion programs for the 2022-23 school year. 

Registration will be open until February 16th at 4:00p.m. for Rising First Graders and March 3rd at 4:00p.m. for Rising Kindergarteners. Your student must be registered at their base school before you can register for the immersion program.  

If you know a friend or neighbor who might be interested in our Spanish Immersion Program, please forward this information on to them or tell them to contact Fort Hunt ES at 703/619-2600.

Elementary Language Arts Resource Review

Revisión de Recursos de Artes del Lenguaje de Primaria

Parents, students, and community members have a unique opportunity to help FCPS select important learning resources. These reviews do not happen frequently, so selected resources will be in classrooms for years and are a significant financial investment. 

Resources for elementary language arts are being reviewed through February 28. Interested individuals can review and provide feedback on digital resources online. Physical texts can be reviewed at the Willow Oaks Administrative Center in the lobby. Please ask about the books at the reception desk from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m., Monday-Friday. In-person review hours will be extended to 7 p.m. on February 3, 10, 17, and 24. You are encouraged to review both sets of resources for the full catalog of resources under review. Los padres, alumnos y miembros de la comunidad tienen una oportunidad única de ayudar a FCPS a seleccionar importantes herramientas de aprendizaje. Fairfax County/FCPS History Marker Project

Proyecto de Marcadores Históricos del Condado de Fairfax/FCPS

The History Marker Project Based-Learning experience is an opportunity for all students residing in Fairfax County to have resources to research untold stories of impactful local Black and African American people and groups to understand why these stories should be shared with the public as historical markers. Through meaningful learning experiences, all Fairfax County students have opportunities to authentically contribute to the rich and diverse history of the Fairfax community.
