All Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Day
Herndon High School is excited to share that we will be implementing an ALL SEL Day after the second quarter, on February 1. On this day, students and faculty will come to school to engage in planned activities that will be fun and relaxing and give students and teachers a chance to build connections and enjoy each other’s company in a non-instructional environment. The schedule will be adjusted so students travel to 7 periods and there will be many activities, including therapy dogs, mindfulness exercises, crafts, and a variety of engaging games.
For many students, school is a major source of meaningful relationships and one of the first places they make social connections outside of their immediate family. This is a great opportunity to give students a chance to spend quality time with each other and their teachers in a relaxed environment that will foster those relationships. It will be a chance for students and teachers to catch their breath and build memories that will help them gain success in the classroom.

Support the Senior Class!
From the Library
Valentine’s Day is around the corner, and the library is again asking, “How many candies are in that jar?” Students are invited to submit an entry that includes their estimate AND a book title they’ve enjoyed recently. The winner will go home with the jar of candy AND a gift card from Scrawl Books. If two or more students guess the correct number or come equally close to the correct number, the winner will be determined by a random drawing.
Snow got in the way of our January Student Book Club meeting, but February’s meeting will take place on Monday, February 14 at 3:00. There is no required reading, and all students are welcome. If your student likes to engage with other students about books and bookish events in a casual environment, encourage them to attend!
We love to work with students to find out about their interests and to offer reading recommendations. When they log in to Destiny (using their school Google account), students are able to search for books, put books on hold, see what they have checked out, and renew their books. We also have hundreds of popular ebooks and e-audiobooks in our collection that students can check out 7 days a week/ 24 hours a day through their MackinVIA app.
Are your students doing research for classes? We work with many classes to help them find reliable information and learn how to use information ethically. Students can find fantastic research supports through their HHS Library course on Schoology, and they can always reach us at hhs_library@fcps.edu to ask a question or to schedule a one-on-one session.
