NEW News

1. Message from Dr. Floyd

Good afternoon, Woodson Community:

Woodson celebrates many important events throughout the school year. And, next week we celebrate two: National School Counseling Week and P.S. I Love You Day.

National School Counseling Week 2022 (#NSCW22) focuses public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems. National School Counseling Week, sponsored by ASCA, highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. National School Counseling Week is always celebrated the first full week in February.

Students are encouraged to take time to thank THEIR school counselor, whether it's upon seeing them in the hallway, visiting their office, preparing a formal notecard or letter; or just sending them a nice email.

As part of a national movement to decrease bullying and promote mental health, Woodson celebrates P.S. I Love You day. On the second Friday of every February, Woodson students and faculty wear purple as an awareness that everyone can help students with concerns about depression or suicide. To report any incidences of bullying, please use the online anonymous bullying site.

On Friday, February 11th, encouraging notes are handwritten for every student at Woodson and posted on their lockers. Our student leadership greets students at the door with cheers and wrist bands and sells t-shirts to fundraise for anti-bullying activities. P.S. I Love You Day is a wonderful day at Woodson where we display kindness and a welcoming environment for all.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Dr. Floyd

2. Report Cards Distributed

Report cards were distributed during 7th period today Friday, February 4th.

PS I LOVE YOU

3. P.S. I Love You Day

P.S. I Love You Day is Friday, February 11th.  Long-sleeve, Comfort Colors shirts go on sale between the cafeterias during lunch starting Monday, February 7th and are $15 each.

The goal of P.S. I Love You Day is to spread happiness and love in order to decrease bullying and promote mental health awareness. We want to raise awareness among students about mental health in the hopes of making difficult conversations easier.  On Friday, February 11th, we encourage the Woodson community to wear purple in order to foster kindness and a welcoming environment.

7. WTW Drama Presents: Silent Sky

Woodson is doing a staged reading of the play “Silent Sky,” based on the life of scientist Henrietta Leavitt. This staged reading will take place in the planetarium, proving a dynamic backdrop of stars, to highlight this incredible woman’s life! This one night only event, on Friday, February 11th at 7pm, will feature a “pay what you can” model with all proceeds going to financial relief for students the next time there is a Woodson Drama New York trip.

There is very limited seating for this event, but we hope to see you there, at this lovely intersection between Arts and Science!  For tickets click here!

"Silent Sky" tells the true story of Henrietta Leavitt, the astronomer ahead of her time. It is 1900, and Henrietta has the opportunity to work at Harvard University as a human computer, mapping the stars but receiving no scientific credit. Yet Leavitt's legacy and work will go on to shape the scientific community. Come see the lovely exploration of the symbiotic relationship between art and science. This dynamic staged reading will be presented in the planetarium (room F107).

The best Entrance to use is Entrance 19.

18. How do I check out my student from school?

Please let the Attendance Office know if you need your student to leave school early.  You can notify Attendance 3 different ways:

  • Submit the online attendance form and have your student pick up their pink checkout pass from the Attendance Office (E107) between classes or during lunch.
  • Student brings a note to the Attendance Office before 9:45am. The student will be issued a pink pass to leave class at the appointed time. The note must include the following - student name, date and time of when student is leaving, and reason for early check-out, student ID, parent signature and contact number.
  • Call the attendance line, 703-503-4800 and select Option 3. After leaving a message, please have your student pick up their pink checkout pass from the Attendance Office (E107) between classes or during lunch.

At the time of dismissal, your son/daughter will bring the pink check-out pass back to the Attendance Office for verification before meeting you outside.

If returning to school that same day, students must check in at the Attendance office before going back to class, even if it is between classes.

If one of the options above is not followed, we cannot guarantee a speedy checkout, so please make sure you notify the attendance office prior to picking up your son/daughter to ensure you make your appointment or commitment on time.

Due to staff responsibilities at the end of the day, we are not able to honor unannounced early dismissals within 15 minutes of school dismissal.

For full details on Attendance Procedures, please visit the Attendance page on the Woodson website.
