Weekly Reminders
Partners for Safe Teen Driving - Virtual
McLean High School will be offering Partners for Safe Teen Driving (PSTD) seminars throughout the school year. All students enrolled in classroom driver education must attend one 90-minute PSTD presentation. The presentation is connected to classroom instruction and must be completed in addition to successful completion of classroom instruction in order for a student to receive a DEC-District 8 (pink) card.
McLean High School’s dates for the 2021-2022 calendar year are:
February 7
April 18
To register for the February 7th PSTD seminar, students can register with a parent or legal guardian here. To access the registration form, students must be logged into their fcpsschools.net account.
All seminars will be held from 6:30-8:00 PM virtually via Schoology Zoom. Registrants will receive an email with the PSTD ZOOM Meeting Link prior to the meeting. We encourage registrants to enter the meeting ten minutes prior to the meeting to avoid technical issues. Attendees who arrive late will NOT BE allowed entry and WILL NOT earn credit for attending. Students and a minimum of one of their parent/guardian(s) must attend a presentation during the calendar year in which the student is enrolled in 10th grade Health and PE. While it is recommended that the PSTD seminar requirement be satisfied during the quarter in which the student is taking classroom driver education, students are welcome to attend any quarter. Important: Students who successfully complete their classroom driver education quarter but have not satisfied the PSTD requirement will have earned an Incomplete for the class grade until the requirement is met.
This program is only available to FCPS students enrolled in grade 10 health and physical education at no charge. Students who are completing classroom instruction through a commercial driving school, are home schooled, are enrolled in another school division, or are FCPS students in grade 11 or 12 must register to attend the 90-minute PSTD seminar through FCPS Adult and Community Education (aceclasses.fcps.edu); a $30 fee will apply. Students enrolled in grade 10 health and physical education do not have to register.
Course Selection for 2022-2023
The course registration process for 2022-2023 is upon us. On Thursday, January 10, students were given time to explore our Academic Advising website during their advisory period. We have also developed an Academic Advising Google Site that is shared with students. In both of these places there you can find helpful tips on selecting classes, videos from teachers describing their classes, graduation requirements, instructions on how to select classes in SIS, and more! While the Google site can only be accessed by students, the Academic Advising website is on the Student Services page of the McLean HS website and can be accessed by anyone.
All students will be meeting one-on-one with their counselor for academic advising. Current freshmen will meet with counselors through their HPE 9 class starting on February 15th. Current sophomores with meet with their counselors through their HPE 10 class starting January 18th. Current juniors will meet with their counselors through their history course beginning January 27th.
We encourage you to have a conversation with your kids as they prepare to make their course decisions. Please keep in mind our mantra of “Balance, Balance, Balance”. While we certainly want to encourage academic development, it is just as important to develop the rest of themselves as well. Teenagers (like all of us) need time to spend with their friends and family, time to do the things they truly enjoy and time to do things that give them a sense of purpose and meaning. They also have to sleep at night. Happiness and well-being depend on all of these factors. If it means taking a schedule with fewer advanced courses in order to have time for the other important pieces of life, they will absolutely be better off doing that!
Hidden in Plain Sight - March 1, 2022
Hidden in Plain Sight is a community awareness program to educate parents through a hands-on learning experience that covers current trends and signs of risky business. The program will outline alcohol use, marijuana, prescription drugs, over the counter drugs, illicit drugs, mental disorders, sexual behavior, and other risky business.
This program is open to adult audiences only. The program is designed to educate parents on recent trends and to assist their child in finding the proper help if a risky behavior is detected. The program is presented by the Fairfax County Police Department’s Crime Prevention Unit.
The presentation will be held at McLean High School in the cafeteria starting at 7:00pm and ending at 8:30pm on March 1, 2022.
Masks will be required to be worn while in the building.
COVID-19 Screening Testing
Parents and guardians can use the secure online portal to register their child(ren). If you do not want your child to participate, no action is required. You will have the option to update your child’s vaccination status and/or withdraw consent for testing anytime.
Student-athletes do not need to pre-register with the LTS online portal for screening testing, they will use a separate portal provided by their school’s student activities director.
For more information on student COVID-19 testing, visit the FCPS website.
