Message from the Principal

Dr Grove

January 31, 2022

Dear Wolftrap Families,

We wish good fortune to those in our community who celebrate Lunar New Year on Tuesday. May everyone in our community share in good fortune and stay well. It is hard to believe that we have arrived at February. We are over halfway through the school year! Progress reports have been posted to ParentVue. Please let us know if we can assist in finding that information.

WOLFTRAP CHATS: Ms. O’Donovan and I welcomed members of our parent and staff community (shout out to those teachers who took the time to join) at our pack chats last week. We discussed some changes in health protocols and the ESSER funding that has been provided to Wolftrap to support academic and wellness initiatives. That slide deck will be posted to our Wolftrap website this week. Please let us know if we can answer any questions. THANK YOU all for coming and supporting us here at Wolftrap.

KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION SAVE THE DATE: At this time, Kinder Orientation will be a virtual event held on Thursday, March 3rd, which is an early release day. Please stay tuned for more information regarding a Google form to register to attend the orientation. We are currently planning for 2:00-3:00pm.

CALENDAR UPDATE 2022-2023: The Fairfax County School Board voted to adopt a calendar for the 2022-23 school year that focuses on instruction, and student and operational needs. Additionally, the calendar is aligned with neighboring school districts and adds additional key observance days. Highlights include:

  • 14 professional work days for teacher planning and professional development time.
  • Additional days off. Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Orthodox Good Friday, and Diwali will now be designated student holidays. (Eid and Lunar New Year fall on a non-school day in 2022).
  • Inclusion of Veterans Day as a student holiday and staff workday.
  • A change in FCPS’ approach to “O” days. Regulation 2234 will be revised to allow new instruction to take place on days denoted as religious and cultural observances. Tests, quizzes, tryouts that cannot be rescheduled, and sporting events and other school-sponsored special events and activities will still be prohibited.

Warmly,

Dr. Maggie Grove

Principal

Wofltrap PTA

Congratulations to our students and the Wolftrap teachers and staff for finishing the first half of the school year! As we look forward to the second half of the year, the PTA has several programs and events planned, including:

  • Edison Expo Community Build Challenge
  • Virtual Talent Show
  • Teacher Refresh Project, where we purchase items teachers need for their classrooms to finish out the school year;
  • Annual 5k Race and 1-Mile Fun Run

Mark your calendar for February 10, 7:00pm for our next virtual PTA meeting. We'll review what our committees are doing and hear an update from Dr. Grove, among other topics. If you've never been to one, we hope you'll join - more details are below!

We are also still running our monthly Teacher Appreciation meals, our Yearbook, and our Winter After-School Programs. It is never too late to get involved, and our committees can use your help. If you have any interest in volunteering for any of these events, please let us know!

5K Registration Opens Feb 7

5K

We are so excited to kick off planning for our annual 5K event (April 24), the biggest fundraising event of the year - and this year it will be in-person!

Registration opens February 7th. Stay tuned for further details, including registration links and pricing, on our PTA website, Facebook Group and the next Connection.

Volunteers are still needed! Email 5k Committee Chair, Christine Harney, at wolftrap5k@gmail.com if you want to provide support - even a small amount of time goes a long way. Thank you for helping us make this event a success!

Edison Expo: Virtual Popsicle Stick Chain Reaction Challenge

edisonexpo

Edison Expo has a new twist this year – the Popsicle Chain Reaction Challenge running Feb 21 through Feb 25th!

Students in grades K-6 can participate in this STEAM activity. Click here for a short video explaining the process.

We challenge you to create the longest popsicle structure possible, then take a video when you release the chain reaction. Students will report the length in inches and the number of popsicle sticks used. Participants in the classroom with the highest cumulative total win free ICE CREAM!

What can I do now? Pick up your sticks! Starting the week of February 14, stop by the front office to pick up a free starter kits of 50 popsicle sticks. If you plan to purchase additional sticks, the larger “jumbo” ones (6") seem to work best.

For additional information and submission details, visit the Edison Expo Webpage!

WES Directories: Distribution Delay

WES Directory 2021-2022

The Wolftrap ES directories will be distributed over the next two weeks to PTA members. They will be sent home with your students, so keep an eye out for them.

If you would like a directory, both online and physical directory, you can still gain access by joining the PTA here. A PTA membership is only $25 and goes completely to support the PTA efforts running programs and support to our school.
