Belvedere News and Announcements

From the Administration

Dear Belvedere Family:

We have entered quarter three of school, and you should be receiving student progress reports next week. It’s hard to believe how fast time goes! Each day we are thankful for our students, families, and the dedicated Belvedere staff. It is such a gift to be able to be in school with students and staff each day. Thank you for your support.

As part of being an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program school, the curriculum at each grade level is organized into big units of inquiry. In grades PK and K there are four units and in grades 1-5 there are six units.  Students learn about themselves, the community around them, and the multiple commonalities with people from all over the world. Within each unit of inquiry teachers weave in the Virginia and FCPS standards across subject areas, crafting units that are centered on a universal idea. This way of teaching brings the curriculum to life in a coherent and connected manner, making a lasting impression on students. We encourage you to ask your child what they are learning, what connections they are making, and what is fun about learning. When we listen to our students, we are often surprised by their wisdom and unique perspectives.

Sincerely,

Cecilia Vanderhye, Principal and Kelly Cabezas, Assistant Principal

Belvedere Yearbook Cover Art Contest

Calling all artists in grades 3-5: we hope you participate in the Yearbook Cover Art Contest!  The winning design will be featured on this year’s Yearbook, which will be distributed at the end of the school year.  The winner will receive a free copy of the Yearbook and a small prize.

Here are some suggestions as you prepare your submissions:

  • You may use any regular 8 ½” x 11” paper for your cover art
  • Be sure to include “Belvedere Elementary” and “2021-2022” on your cover art!
  • Paper should be in vertical (portrait) orientation—up and down!
  • Fill the entire page with color! It’s best to use markers, paint or vivid crayons/colored pencils
  • Covers should represent the school—it’s up to you to decide how you want to do that
  • Don’t forget to write your full name (first & last names, please) and your teacher’s name on the back

All submissions should go to the Belvedere office.  The deadline for submissions is this Friday, January 28, 2022.

Free or Low-Cost Internet through Cox's Connect2Compete Program

FCPS is working to ensure that all FCPS students have Internet access at home. Through the FCPS Cox Connect-to-Compete program, FCPS will pay for Internet service for qualifying families through June 2022. Cox’s Connect2Compete program provides low-cost internet to families that meet these qualifications:

  • have at least one child that attends an FCPS school;
  • participate in, or qualify for, one of these government subsidy programs: The National School Lunch Program, SNAP, TANF or Public Housing; and
  • have not had Cox standard Internet services in the home within the last 90 days.

If your family is in need of Internet service at home so that your student can participate in virtual learning, please contact the Belvedere office to begin the application process.

Free and Reduced-Price Meals Application

Although this school year breakfast and lunch meals are free to all students, we encourage families who believe their children might qualify for free and reduced-priced meals to apply for this program. Qualifying for free and reduced-priced meals has many added benefits, beyond the free meals. For elementary students, these include:

  • Reduced or waived musical instrument rental fee
  • Information about holiday assistance
  • Information about non-FCPS scholarships, classes and other non-FCPS educational related services
  • Pupil placement fees

There are also many other benefits and fee waivers that apply to students in middle school and high school (see this earlier letter from Dr. Brabrand).

Belvedere is a Title I school. A school’s Title I status is calculated based on the percentage of students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals. As a Title I school, Belvedere benefits from grant funds that support many school programs.

To apply for free and reduced-price meals, please go to this website.

We are here to support you. If you need help completing this application, please call the school.  We can help you over the phone or schedule a time for you to come to school and complete the application.

Thank you for considering this important matter.
