- How do you want to engage with your child’s school?
- What are the most important parts of a parent-educator relationship?
Your feedback will be used to make family-school partnerships more inclusive and impactful in FCPS. National PTA will also use your feedback to inform a set of National Standards for family-school partnerships nationwide.
Sessions last 1 hour and 15 minutes, are interactive, discussion-based, and open to all FCPS families and educators. You do not need to be a PTA member to participate.
A small stipend will be given to the first 20 registrants per session who then attend and complete a brief survey.

Helpful weekly tip is to be used at home with your child. These will help your child with their reading skills at home. By doing this along with your child you will be modeling best practices.
Writing Time:
When discussing literacy, writing can often be overlooked but is just as essential to practice as reading at home. Have them practice writing by asking your child to help you write out the grocery list, a thank you note to Grandma, or to keep a journal of special things that happen at home.
Example: The next time you are about to go to the grocery store or do errands have your child make a list for you. Have them cross off the things that you do and tell you what else you still need to get.

Website Helps Reston Residents Age in Place
Reston, VA – Reston for a Lifetime, an organization that seeks to help the community’s older residents live independently for as long as possible, has updated its website to include many added resources as well as tools to enable Reston’s townhouse clusters to assist older neighbors who may need help.
Restonforalifetime.org now includes extensive local resources that allow users to find information on caregiving, healthy aging, legal help, long term services and supports, paying for care, and transportation. The vast majority of listed resources are those provided by nonprofits or governmental entities.
Reston for a Lifetime is part of the Village to Village Network that supports a growing number of “villages” across the country. Originally started on Boston’s Beacon Hill, the village concept engages neighbors helping older neighbors to stay in their homes when they need care. Many villages are run by staff or volunteers and are often community wide. However, forming such a village in Reston has been difficult.
“Reston is unique in so many ways,” says Sharon Canner one of the organization’s long-term leaders. “Unlike in many communities, Reston already has many trusted county and community resources that provide the kinds of services a formal village might need volunteers or staff to organize.
Our new website can link you or someone who cares about you with them in a few clicks or by phone.”
For example, some villages have organized around rides for those needing to get to a medical appointment or shopping. But in Reston residents have the choice of Reston Rides or NV Rides that offer free rides using vetted volunteers. Both are listed on the site with links to their websites and phone numbers.
Also unique to Reston are its over 130 townhouse clusters. “The cluster association board is ideally positioned to organize around the village concept especially because many people trust their closest neighbors,” Canner adds. “That’s why we developed a tool kit to help any cluster, condo association or interested group of neighbors to form their own.”
Canner and her colleague and Reston resident Scott Parkin also edit News for Neighbors, a monthly newsletter that provides the latest news on relevant events or webinars, resource updates, aging and health issues as well as employment and volunteer opportunities. Those interested in subscribing can do so on the website.
If your child will be out sick for the day it is important that you include ALL stymptoms your child is experiencing. This information is needed to understand why a student is absent and determine if there are any COVID like symptoms. On days with high student absences it also helps the health department determine if we have a large amount of communicable diseases within the school.
If reporting an ill child, please identify any of the symptoms below.
Feeling feverish or chills | Fever of 100.4 F or higher | Headache | New muscle pain | A new cough | A new sore throat | Shortness of breath or breathing difficulties | New loss of taste, smell, or appetite | Congestion or runny nose | Fatigue (more tired than normal or sudden onset) | Abdominal pain | Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
