WSHS Clubs WIN Lake Accotink Park Trash Off!

WSHS Interact and Key Clubs - Trash Off!

WSHS wins the Lake Accotink Trash Off Competition!

On January 16th, Fairfax County Park Authority and Friends of Lake Accotink Park (FLAP) sponsored a cleanup competition at Lake Accotink Park between local high school service clubs and organizations. The challenge was to clean up the most trash in two hours to aid the park's beautification and to help the environment. Along with amassing volunteer hours, the winning school was awarded a pizza party.

With over seven schools competing (Annandale, Edison, Hayfield, Lewis, West Springfield and Woodson), and over 100 student participants in the competition... West Springfield's Interact Club (with help from Key Club members) won the day! Congrats to our students for their volunteerism and service and for supporting this community-wide effort to better our local environment!

Get involved: the next Trash Off is schedule for April. See Fairfax County Park News for more information.

Fun Food February

FOOD! FUN! FEBRUARY! is an initiative of the West Springfield PTSA to bless our teachers and staff by warming up the break rooms at WSHS with snacks, sweet treats, coffee, teas and more. We have almost 300 teachers and staff, so we solicit your help in providing food and other items. Let's work together to fill up their break rooms.

FOOD! FUN! FEBRUARY! will take place on Thursday, Feb 3 and Friday, Feb 4th. All FOOD! FUN! FEBRUARY! items must be delivered to Trish Martin (Address: 6048 Haverhill Court) by Tues, Feb 1st.

Sign up HERE or for simply order from the WISH LIST.

The teachers and staff LOVED when we filled the break rooms last year so let's do it again and make FOOD! FUN! FEBRUARY! a success again this year!

National School Counseling Week

National School Counseling Week: February 7-11

What do School Counselors do? According to the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), School Counselors are licensed educators who address students’ academic, career, and social/emotional development needs by implementing and executing a counseling program aiming for student success. They can work in every level of education or in district supervisory roles. In particular, Our WHSH School Counselors are champions at promoting and supporting the emotional wellness of our students.

On its website, ASCA explains that National School Counseling Week “highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.”

What Are Some Counselor Appreciation Week Ideas?

Students are encouraged to take time to thank YOUR school counselor, whether it's upon seeing them in the hallway, visiting their office, preparing a formal notecard or letter; or just sending them a nice email. Teachers can decorate their doors with signs expressing gratitude for the work school counselors do and the difference they make in students’ lives.

ASCA offers a free downloadable certificate of appreciation that students can give to school counselors, and more.

Let’s be sure to celebrate our WSHS counselors during National School Counseling Week, February 7-11, 2022.
