Westgate Weekly News

Good Afternoon Westgate Families,

I hope this finds you and your family healthy and well.  I wanted to personally thank our community for the overwhelming support of our first virtual learning day last week.  We had close to 100% attendance from our students and I just wanted to celebrate the hard work of our teachers and families to make it a success for our students.  We appreciate you making it a priority to get your child online, however, we are certainly happy to have everyone back in-person today!

We hope you can join us tonight for our PTA Meeting focused on mindfulness and facilitated by our very own school counselor, Ms. VanTassel.  You can join us here at 7:00 p.m.  More information can be found below and we hope to see many of you there.

As a reminder, our Lifetouch Fall Picture Re-takes are tomorrow, January 26 so if you want your child to participate in re-takes, please plan accordingly.

As we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, I want to thank our families for ensuring that students are not coming to school when they may be experiencing COVID like symptoms.  We continue to keep student and staff safety as our top priority and appreciate the collaborative efforts from our families to make this a reality.

Wishing you a wonderful week ahead!

All my best,

Hallie Demetriades

Principal

Virtual PTA Meeting - Tonight, January 25 @ 7:00 p.m. with Ms. VanTassel

Our third, virtual PTA meeting for this academic year has been rescheduled for tonight, Tuesday, January 25, at 7:00pm! Ms. Kelly VanTassel will be leading a discussion regarding mindfulness.  You can join us here!

Have you ever wondered about mindfulness? You may have heard about it in recent years and are wondering how it connects to your child. Wonder no more and join us on January 7th for an explanation and practice of mindfulness as it relates to elementary aged students. Kelly VanTassel, our School Counselor, will define mindfulness, provide us with a little practice and give us some tips for incorporating mindfulness into our daily routines.

Kelly VanTassel has been a School Counselor at Westgate for 15 years. Prior to Westgate she was director of a youth department at a DC non-profit. Over her time at Westgate her greatest claim to fame has come from her backyard chickens; their lives are shared frequently on the morning news!

Kilmer MS - Virtual Orchestra Q&A Night - January 27 @ 7:00 p.m.

Dear Parents and Guardians of 6th grade students,

Greetings from Heather Yacovissi, Elizabeth Fogel, and Mike Klucker, the Orchestra teachers at Thoreau MS, Kilmer MS, and Jackson MS! We are writing to invite you to consider orchestra as part of your child's middle school course of study.

Taking Orchestra class offers students a chance to gain new musical skills on the violin, viola, cello, or string bass, make friends, attend a fun field trip to an amusement park, and so much more! Playing a musical instrument is also associated with strong academic success, increased student self-confidence, and a sense of place and purpose within the middle school community.

Best of all, there is a place for EVERY student in our orchestra programs, from total beginners through highly advanced players. No musical experience is necessary for students to enjoy all that our classes have to offer. All students need to do is select "ORCHESTRA" as their first choice of elective during middle school class sign-up and we will take care of the rest!

Please complete the Orchestra Interest Google Form at this link to receive more information about signing up for orchestra class.

On Thursday, January 27th from 7:00-7:45 PM, we will hold a Live Question and Answer Session on Zoom for all parents and students interested in Orchestra. You will be sent a link for the session once you complete the interest form above.

  • All who are interested in orchestra should complete the interest form, regardless of whether they plan to attend the meeting on the January 27.
  • During the meeting, we will provide additional details about orchestra class and answer your questions. Students are welcome to attend, but must attend with their parent or guardian.

We look forward to meeting you and your students at the Live Q&A on the 27th and we hope to see your child in orchestra class for the 2021-2022 school year!

Warm Regards,

Elizabeth Fogel   -  eafogel@fcps.edu

Heather Yacovissi  -  hjyacovissi@fcps.edu
