Upcoming College Admission Seminars

Getting From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be, Jan 26th, 6:00PM

The Admission Game, Weds Feb. 9th, 6:00pm

Do you ever wonder who “gets in” and “why?” “The Admission Game” answers these questions by taking you inside the admission process. TAG is a high-energy, high-impact, interactive case study exercise for students and parents in which the audience is transformed into an admission committee. Through more theatre than lecture, Peter teaches the audience by using and explaining relevant terms that help ease the stress of an otherwise frenzied process. This signature program reveals the “hidden agendas” of colleges and provides insight into how decisions are made, which helps students learn to find the colleges that fit them best and make decisions that help them compete for admission.

40-year veteran of the college admission process, Peter Van Buskirk is dedicated to helping families find student-centered solutions in college planning. His ability to interpret and personalize a complex, and often mysterious, college-going process makes him a popular speaker among students, parents and educators. His creative programming has informed, inspired and entertained more than 2,000 audiences around the world.   Peter moved through the ranks at Franklin & Marshall College to become Dean of Admission, Interim Director of Athletics, Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management, and Executive Officer in the Office of the Provost. He subsequently created and now operates Best College Fit® as a platform for delivering student-centered college planning content to students, parents and educators. In addition, Peter convenes a national, annual think-tank meeting of deans of admission and veteran college advisors and assess recent developments and future trends in the college-going process.

Activities Jan 24-28

Girls Basketball

The Woodson girls varsity basketball team lost two games last week after going 3-1 the previous week:

The Cavs fell to Robinson 45-33. Kelsie Chang led the offense with 13 points and Amaia Phippen provided strong play in the second half. They lost to West Potomac 53-17. Kate Avera anchored the 2nd half defense with rebounding and a steal. She was helped by Darcy Hilton, Natalie AllenChloe Park, and Maryam Rafie.

In games earlier this month, the Cavs lost to Alexandria City 56-45. Eunice Yoon and Emma Komaily scored 12 points each while Levi Weinberger and Julia Oleyar both added 7 points. Allie Williams grabbed 7 rebounds. Woodson bested West Springfield 37-21, by bolting out to a 14-1 lead. Levi Weinberger tenaciously secured 12 rebounds, while Kelsie Chang led the offense with 11 points. The Cavs edged Lake Braddock 39-38, when Emma Komaily swished an arcing 3 point shot to tie the game in the 4th quarter. Eunice Yoon’s free throw broke the tie with 3.8 seconds left. Woodson beat South County 57-35. Emma Komaily poured in 26 points and Claire Campion sank a 3 pointer to end the 3rd quarter. The Cavs were strong inside as Allie Williams snared 12 and Kate Avera grabbed 2 rebounds.

Swim & Dive

In the last dual meet of the regular season last Friday, Woodson took on West Potomac HS at the Mt Vernon Rec Center. Both the girls and the boys came away with wins -- the boys finished 211-94, and the girls with 219-95.

Woodson’s record is now 5-1 for both the girls and boys in the Patriot District.

The last meet was also Senior Night, celebrating the seniors in “One Last Rodeo!"

Woodson Seniors are: Eladia DiNicola, Aiken Do, Kendyl Ellenberger, Sydney Farling, Sally Harrington, Tate Hoffman, Phillip Jones, Elle Levi, Kathleen Modder, Meghan Murray, Andrew Nguyen, Kameron Nguyen, Thomas Nguyen, Brendan Read, Jackson Recher, Emmy Rummel, Gabe Rupar, Julian Sasala, John Schaefer, Bevin Surbey, Simon Tao, Nate Vu, and Izzy White.

Up next for Woodson is the Patriot District Meet! Preliminaries are this Friday, January 28, with Finals on Saturday, January 29, at the Oak Marr Rec Center.

Rifle

Woodson Rifle traveled into Maryland to compete against Landon in Maryland, where the team achieved their second victory of the season.  Once again Captain and Senior, Victoria Cross led the team to the win as the top shooting athlete. Joining Victoria were seniors, Emma Orthman, Kyle Barron, Joseph Stefanski, Sam Lingenfelter; junior, Marco Ramanta; and sophomores, Ben Hayes, Jonah Hilbert, Matthew Wang.

Woodson also faced the Mavericks. They were able to maintain their winning streak with Captains and Seniors Victoria Cross and Rose McClelland leading the team to the win. Kyle Barron, Rushil Punukollu, Emma Orthman, Ben Hayes, and Joseph Stefanski joined them in the top 8 positions.

Last Thursday they saw their winning streak come to an end as they faced off against Lake Braddock.  Sophomore, Rushil Punukollu led the team with a personal best of 292, shooting consistently across prone, standing and kneeling.

Ice Hockey Club

Last week was a tough week on the ice for the Woodson Ice Hockey Club. The team was missing key players in both games, and fell 5 to 1 to Hayfield / South County and 6 to 0 to Forest Park / Hylton.

On a brighter note, the club was able to honor its seniors before Friday night’s game - Thomas Houttekier, Ryan DePriest, Sean Hanson, and Cameron Funaro. Thanks for their contributions to the club - both on and off the ice!  The team has two regular season games remaining, and will try to gain some momentum heading into the playoffs starting this coming Friday night against Lake Braddock / Fairfax.  Puck drop is at 9 pm at the St. James.  The address is 6805 Industrial Road, Springfield, VA.  Admission is free, so come out and support the team!

SURVEYS

Virginia School Survey in February

This spring our school, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and the Virginia Department of Education, is conducting the Virginia School Survey of Climate and Working Conditions of students, classroom instructors, and staff. The purpose of this survey is to measure student support, student engagement, school discipline, and safety conditions in each school. This information will be used to guide educational practices that produce a safe and supportive school environment.

The online survey will be administered to all students grades 9-12, on Friday, February 4th, 2022 during 3rd period. The survey does not ask for your child’s name and all answers are anonymous (no one will know how your child answered the survey). Parents and guardians will not have access to their child’s survey answers. You may review the student survey at this website: https://tinyurl.com/VaSchoolSurvey.

The survey will ask questions such as how students feel about their school, how students get along with one another and their teachers, how students feel about school rules, and their perceptions of their teachers’ willingness to help them. Students will also be asked what kinds of bullying they may have observed during school and whether they have been bullied themselves.

Students participating in remote instruction and in-person instruction are both eligible to participate. The survey is voluntary and your child can decide not to participate. No action will be taken against you, your child, or the school if your child does not participate. If you do not wish for your child to participate, please notify the school office by email to jtobrien1@fcps.edu by Monday, January 31st.

Your child will not receive any immediate benefit from participating in the survey, but the survey will help us to maintain a safe, inviting, and supportive learning environment for your child.

Vision, Mission and Values - Your input is needed

Every 5-10 years, schools and organizations need to re-evaluate their vision, mission and values to ensure they still reflect who they are. In 2015, the Woodson community adopted this current Vision, Mission and Values:

Vision Statement

We are a school community where all students matter.

Mission Statement

To foster a culture of success by developing the academic, social, and emotional potential of all students.

Values

Our values guide us in the pursuit of our mission:

  • Empowerment – We encourage students to discover their passions and make the right choices to develop their own path.
  • Trust – We believe in each other and assume positive intentions.
  • Honesty – We are committed to the truth.
  • Collaboration – We are stronger as a group than as individuals.
  • Diversity – We respect and appreciate the uniqueness of each individual.
  • Resiliency – We recognize that perseverance and hope are key to a fulfilling life.

This year we are inviting the Woodson community to share input based on YOUR ideas for Woodson High School's new Vision, Mission and Values.

Some things to think about as you answer include: Where do you want to see Woodson HS in 5 years? How do we get there? What are our fundamental beliefs of who we are? Please complete this Google Form to share your ideas.

FCPS Superintendent Search Survey

The Fairfax County School Board is committed to hiring the best possible candidate for FCPS’ next superintendent. With that in mind, the Board has contracted a search firm to conduct a national search for the new superintendent. Your voice is an important part of this effort! Please weigh in by participating in the Superintendent Search Survey today. The survey allows FCPS parents/guardians, staff, high school students, and community members to share their thoughts on the leadership characteristics and qualities of the next superintendent. Information gathered through the survey, focus groups, and upcoming town halls will help inform the selection of FCPS’ new superintendent.

Please check your email for a survey link from K12 Insight (survey administrator), which was sent on January 4. High school students received their survey invitation on January 5, via their FCPSSchools.net email accounts. If you are an FCPS community member and would like to take the survey, please visit FCPS’ Superintendent Search page for the community member survey link. Thanks in advance for your participation in this important process.

Updates to Quarantine/Isolation Guidance

Effective as of Monday, January 10, 2022. The information provided below provides a summary of the updates. Please reference the FCPS Health and Safety Guidance for additional details.

New Guidance for Returning to School After Quarantine, Pause, or Isolation

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued new guidance for isolation and quarantine in late December, with multiple updates in January. This guidance reduces isolation and quarantine to five days. The VDH states that school districts may choose to continue more stringent isolation and quarantine requirements or may implement the new CDC guidance.

FCPS will adopt the new guidance with one exception:

  • FCPS will adopt CDC’s recommendation for a five-day period of quarantine for  students and staff.
  • FCPS will adopt CDC’s recommendation for a five-day period of isolation for staff.
  • FCPS will NOT adopt CDC’s recommendation for isolation for students as we are unable to implement the required physical distancing protocols during meals.  FCPS students with COVID- 19 will need to continue to complete a ten day isolation period.

Return Guidance for Students with COVID-19

Students who are COVID-19 positive are able to return to school when ALL of the following criteria are met:

  • Student completes at least 10 days of isolation from symptom onset for symptomatic students or 10 days since testing positive (day test administered) for COVID-19 for asymptomatic students; AND
  • Student is fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication; AND
  • Student’s symptoms have improved; AND
  • Student submits the FCPS Isolation Letter with the return date to their attending school

Return Guidance for Students who are Close Contacts to School Related Exposures

Asymptomatic students who are close contacts and required to quarantine are able to return to school when all the criteria for one of the two options below is met:

  • Option 1:
    • Student completes five days of quarantine; AND
    • Student is asymptomatic; AND
    • Student is able to wear a face mask at school- Day 6 thru 10 ; AND
    • Student submits FCPS Pause Letter with the return date to their attending school
  • Option 2:
    • Student completes ten days of quarantine; AND
    • Student submits FCPS Pause Letter with the return date to their attending school
    • Students with mask exemptions will need to utilize Option 2 to return from quarantine.

Some students and staff may be exempt from quarantine if they meet the CDC criteria, are able to wear a face mask, and are asymptomatic:

  • Students must complete the FCHD vaccination survey, and receive a clearance email from the FCHD prior to resuming in-person learning and activities.
  • Staff must complete the Fully Vaccinated Exemption Form

Return Guidance for Students who are Close Contacts to Community Related Exposures

NEW!   FCPS will no longer require Return to School documentation for a student deemed a close contact in the community, outside of the school environment. FCPS recommends that families adhere to the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) quarantine guidance, as appropriate. If families have questions regarding COVID-19, they are encouraged to consult their physician or the Fairfax County Health Department

Updated Health and Safety Guidance Documents

The best source of the most up-to-date information, including how students return to school after quarantine or isolation, is available on the Health and Safety Guidance Document on the FCPS website.

FCPS staff should refer to resources on the Employee Hub for updated guidelines to return to work.

Voluntary Student COVID Screening

Portal to register

LTS is the contracted vendor for FCPS student testing. Woodson HS was assigned the testing time of Fridays from 12-3pm.  LTS will randomly choose up to 10% of our population, from only those who have agreed to be tested.

Testing is Fridays 12-3 at Woodson, and only takes a few minutes. Students will be missing class to be tested.

Results are uploaded to the same system where you registered your child for this program.  Only administrators will have access to this information at Woodson High School.

Have problems registering? Contact LTS for IT support/registration support: fcps@lts.com  (NOT affiliated with FCPS and FCPS cannot assist with this process as technical support)

Unvaccinated Athletes COVID Testing

All high school student-athletes participating in FCPS athletic programming who are not fully vaccinated between the ages of 12-15 or between the ages of 16-18 with a medical or religious exemption will be required to submit negative COVID-19 test results to the Director of Student Activities at the school on a weekly basis in order to participate in sports for school year 2021-2022.
