Message from Dr. Smith

“One way to get the most out of life is to look upon it as an adventure.” – William Feather

What an adventure this week has been! We began with a cautious awareness around masking, then we moved to celebrating numerous Senior Nights and now we are ending the week with an excitement over the anticipation of another wintery weekend. Throughout this week, we have appreciated the support and collaboration that our staff, students, and community have provided to allow us to “Keep the Main Thing, the Main Thing” during these life events. Due to your support and positive energy, we were able to focus our efforts on teaching, learning, and supporting our students and staff throughout the week.

This week has proven that when we are transparent in our actions and work to engage and collaborate with all stake holders, we are more successful in achieving our vision and mission of making our school more Connected, Adaptable, Resilient, and Engaging. We look forward to continuing and deepening our partnership between the school and community as we know this is how we will continue to move forward in achieving our ultimate goal of all our Bruins having what they need to thrive in a dynamic world.

We look forward to sharing and gathering your input as we start to plan for next year.

United as Bruins,

Daniel W. Smith, Ed.D.

bears

Our Bruin guardian thru the years!  Bruin was built by a senior, Chris Goutos, (Class of 1983) and several teachers.  It originally started as an art project to design a public art sculpture!  Goutos added the two cubs in later years.  Can you believe this old bruin is made of chicken wire, plywood, reinforced rods, plastic jugs, concrete and various junk--and of course many layers of paint!  We think the old Bruin looks pretty good for their age, but maybe a bit tired and looking for retirement plans as they approach the big 4-0.

Lake Braddock Bear Statue Update

Bruin families, it is time to retire our well-loved Bruin statue at the front of our school.  Plans are in motion with a Bear Selection Committee consisting of staff, parents, and students.  Our current bear will be replaced with a younger bear statue representing our Lake Braddock community with pride.  The timeline is to begin the purchase process next month in order to have the bear in place by May.  A bear will be in place for graduation and end of year ceremonies.  We look forward to sharing more about the details as they unfold.  While we will miss our current Bruin, we know it is time for them to retire from the duties of watching over our Lake Braddock community.  The committee will announce the sunsetting ceremony date of our old Bruin once a replacement date is established.  (Statue pictured is not necessarily a representation of the new statue).

In-Person Attendance at LB/FCPS Events Returns This Weekend

This weekend we are excited to welcome back our spectators to our performing arts, athletics and all events at Lake Braddock and across FCPS.  We know that our students, staff and fans have been cheering on our Bruins from a far and are ready to rejoin in-person.  Good luck to our teams that begin postseason play this weekend.

However, you can still watch FCPS high school sporting events online. Here’s how:

  1. Go to www.NFHSnetwork.com.
  2. Search for (school name) and go to its page.
  3. Subscribe and follow.

This service is free for the rest of this school year. You do not need to purchase anything if you are watching FCPS hosted events.

Lunar New Year February 1st

Wishing good fortune to those in our community who celebrate Lunar New Year! In many east Asian countries, the Lunar New Year is one of the most important holidays of the year and is all about ushering in luck & prosperity with family.

FCPS has designated Lunar New Year as a religious and cultural observance day designed to allow students the opportunity to miss school for observances not already designated as school holidays.

How to Stay In Touch

Please stay in touch with us throughout the year by:

Attendance Lines

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS:

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS:

Procedures for Picking Up a Student Early

  • Prior to 8:00 a.m., the student must present a note from the parent to their subschool office. Notes must include time of dismissal, reason for leaving, and a contact number. Parents of middle school students must also include the name of the person picking the student up. Please note that this person must be listed as an emergency contact. At the time of early check-out, middle school parents must come in Entrance 1 and meet their student at the security desk. Anyone picking up a middle school student must bring a photo ID with them. High school parents may pick up students outside Entrance 1.
  • Notes are strongly preferred for early check-out, but if a parent is unable to send a note with the student, the parent should call the subschool office as early as possible. All calls will be confirmed by callback to a phone number on the emergency care card. Regrettably, if the parent did not send a note with the student, the parent will be required to park, come into the school to furnish a note, and pick up the student. Without advance notice provided by a note, there may be a wait until our staff is able to locate the student, particularly if the student is at lunch or in a physical education class. We further regret that without advance notice, we are unable to accommodate requests for early dismissal after 2:15 pm.
  • In either case, students must check out at the subschool office when leaving school and check in with the security desk upon return. Students who leave school without checking out properly will be marked unexcused and may face disciplinary action (if returning to school, students are also subject to search). Students must contact all teachers of any class to be missed.

Read our full Attendance procedures at our website.

Late Bus Information

Late bus days are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Buses will pick up students in the front of the building with a departure time of approximately 4:45 pm.  Please check  StudentVue and ParentVue for your student's late bus number and stop. If you have any questions, please contact your student's appropriate subschool.
